Sootfur showed the first tail signal and within a moment's notice did Vixenpaw copied it -- not only that however, but her whole body also became rigid and straight, mimicking the stiff, up-pointing stance her tail had taken on. That meant stop. And when she had to curl her tail over her back like a snail - which she did - her back curved downwards as well, once again mimicking the tail. This was so strange for the young kitten, but it was fun all the same! So this meant follow. Was someone following her now? Vixenpaw had to check behind her to be certain, but she saw no one. Okay, next came danger, what a funny word! The little apprentice giggled a little when Sootfur said the word, before trying to copy it. This one was much more difficult however, and Vixenpaw contorted her back and tail in all sorts of strange shapes as a result (one of them had to be the correct one though, she was certain of it)!

As Oriolepaw waited for the event to begin, one of the newer apprentices came up to him. He started to wrack his brain for the kid's name, only to quietly sigh in relief as he introduced himself. Sandpaw.

He beamed down at the little tom. "Hello, Sandpaw! I'm Oriolepaw. It's nice to meet you; congrats on becoming an apprentice." Oriolepaw purred as Sandpaw gestured to Sootfur and identified him as his mentor. "You're lucky to be paired with Sootfur. He cares about all of his Clanmates, especially the young ones. You'll do very well with him, I'm sure."

When the event began, the orange-and-black apprentice paid close attention. This was important; it could make the difference between life and death!

First signal. Hold your tail stiffly up behind you. His tail shot up straight, stiff as bark. "The signal for stop," he repeated.

Second signal. Kink your tail over your back. He relaxed his tail, then brought it over his back. It wasn't a gesture he was used to doing, so it felt a little awkward. "The signal for 'follow me'".

Third signal. This one was tough- it took him a good couple tries to get the bend quite right. "Danger." He figured this one was most important, so he made a mental note to practice it more later.

Periodically, he glanced down at Sandpaw to make sure he was following along okay. If a couple of these signals were awkward or difficult for the older apprentice, he imagined it must be even more so that way for Sandpaw.

Sootfur observed carefully all the cats gathered with him under the Thunderwillow, noticing with amusement the clumsy attempts of the kits and the serious expressions of apprentices and warriors focused on their tasks.
His silver eyes stopped on a fire-colored pelt, one he'd longed to see since he'd woken up that morning. Flameheart! His gaze lit up when she looked at him. She's... following my instructions! All he felt was now pride and happiness. He waved cheerfully at her with his tail, a wide grin printed on his face.

Oh, and it looks like Oriolepaw's meeting Sandpaw! He was so happy to see his friend and his new apprentice getting to know each other, especially because Sootfur had the impression that Sandpaw didn't have so many friends outside of Russetfur. Despite that, he couldn't repress the slight disappointment that Crowpaw hadn't shown up today. I might.. talk to him, later. He thought hesitantly.

Enough time had passed since his last instructions. Cats seemed ready to move on, and so was he.
"Now let's move on, shall we?" He yowled with a calm, yet powerful voice.

4. Stay behind me
Sootfur made sure he was visible to everyone, then turned to show his side to the crowd and straightened his tail. Holding it erect, he waved it from side to side as if he was lazily trying to move away a bothering fly. "Now, if you wave your tail in this wail while holding it straight, you're telling the cats behind you to stay behind." Easy enough, right? He hoped so.




5. Spread out
"This one looks similar, except for the tail position. I'm still waving it from side to side but keeping it low to the ground as if sweeping the leaves from it. See?" His gray tabby tail brushed the sandy, dusty ground barely without touching it. With his movements, he aimed to draw wide semi-circles as if telling all the cats behind him to spread just like his tail was pointing.




6. Get down
"Now watch closely. This is pretty intuitive."
Sootfur pretended to suddenly have spotted an enemy and crouched down immediately, tail flattened on his butt.
"If my tail gets down this way, you get down as well. We'll also crouch down and try to hide among the vegetation so that we don't get spotted."




It was a lot to remember, Sootfur admitted it. It could take a while for apprentices to learn all these signals, but he expected warriors to be a bit quicker on that. After all, if the older fighters couldn't communicate among themselves... who would do it when they needed it?
"I still have a lot to show you, so please bear with me and keep practicing, repeating the signal names as you do it. Find a partner, if that helps. Remember that in the end, I'll have a quiz for all of you to see if your memory actually caught up something from all of this."

Feathernose had finished practicing the moves, and was watching Sootfur for the next ones. She saw him wave his tail, and mimicked it herself before realising that he was greeting someone, and not teaching the move. Self-consciously she tried to pretend that she hadn't just done that.
Next ones! Wave it in the air to say, stay behind me. Similar to stop.
Wave it above the ground to say, spread out. OK, that one made sense, and drop your tail, to say get down. Also well represented.

Feathernose practice all three, then re-did the others in her mind.

Rowanblaze and Mossykit did the tail signals together all correctly yet very slowly

Darkpetal and Echopaw carefully observed and repeated the tail signals.

{Springpaw}

Springpaw felt a bit of unease when she had tried to follow each tail sign. It wasn’t easy, but her tail had slowly shifted from one signal to another. She got a couple of the signals wrong at times, making her mentally cringe to herself as she immediately began to try to fix the signal. Thankfully, the signal was only slightly bad, but it wasn’t the greatest. Letting out a shaky breath, she mumbled each of the tail signs and began to practice copying each of them. It felt like a foolish task, but she wanted to learn, so this was at least a good start, right? The ‘get down’ tail signal however made her cringe as when she moved her tail down towards her haunches, her tail not moving as fast enough as she had intended. Dang it. She forced the hot rush of embarrassment to not include on the training as she just continued practicing. She’ll get better eventually, right?

She did worse on this set, she understood them, but with the first two, she struggled with the waving motion and keeping them in the right spots, as for 'get down'. . .well she did the best at it so that was a bit reassuring, but it still took her a bit to get. Thankfully, she was still able to eventually get them right, so that was a relief.

The reminder of a pop-quiz made her panic a bit internally though.

Body and tail erect, Vixenpaw and her tail slowly swayed side to side with a positively serious expression, repeating in her mind stay behind. Similarly, she held herself as though she was a living arrow pointing forward, body and tail swaying side to side just like Sootfur!! Well, just like Sootfur for the tail part, not the rest. This one was, uh, spread! How fun hehe. And ohhh, the next one was extra extra fun! She'd never crouched before, so it looked real messy, but Vixenpaw did her best to crouch the way Sootfur did, tail down to the ground as much as possible. This one was get down, because she was down!

Being as young as he was, this was a little hard for Wolfkit to follow. But he saw Sootfur move his tail around and tried to mimic him - puffing out his chest with a grin etched across his muzzle. "squeaaak!" His tail popped up, as straight as possible. So fierce, so strong! As Sootfur continued, so did he - trying to curl his tail but it felt funky. The tip of his tail tickled his own back and he twisted, flailing at it.

Soon enough, he was distracted by his own tail, the lesson forgotten as he tussled with it on the ground. He'd show it for tickling him!!!!
