When Flowerhawk woke up from her nap, she was in a social mood. She stretched as she scanned the clearing for a victim, her eyes landing on a black cat sitting alone across the camp. He looked bored. I can fix that, she decided. She contemplated a conversation starter as she crossed the clearing. Greeting him with a friendly meow, she said, “I’m Flowerhawk, and you look bored. Do you think water gets thirsty—ugh, can’t talk. Do you think fish get thirsty for water?”

The Talkative Blackbird

Blackbird watched the she-cat approach. A smirk crossed his face as she slipped up. “If water gets thirsty?” He chuckled. “It’s nice to meet you. I’m Blackbirdwing, although I prefer Blackbird. And… No, I honestly don’t think fish get thirsty.” He felt his pelt heat up. This was his first time really interacting with a she-cat since his mother left him many moons ago. ”Um.. Yes. I am bored as a matter of fact. Perhaps you want to hunt?” Blackbird asked, seeming interested in the she-cat.

The tips of Flowerhawk’s ears burned as the tom laughed good-naturedly at her mistake. She gave him an embarrassed smile as he introduced himself. “Nice to meet you, too, Blackbird.” She could see why he went by Blackbird; Blackbirdwing was quite the mouthful. “I don’t think they’d get thirsty, either.” It only made sense for them to never thirst for water, since they lived in it.

Flowerhawk’s ears perked up at Blackbird’s proposition. “Hunting sounds great. I’ve hardly gotten to leave camp since all these new rules!” The sentence sounded awkward, but she didn’t bother to correct herself. “Of course, I see why they’re necessary. Where were you thinking of going?” she asked, rising to her paws.

The Talkative Blackbird

Blackbird smiled. “Agreed.” Something bother Blackbird. This cat seemed interesting, that must be why. But why did his fur still burn? He’d gotten over Flowerhawk being the first she-cat he’d chatted to in moons, hadn’t he? Maybe… Hm… Sorry. Hardly leaving camp has had an impact on my memory of the territory to be honest…” He mewed, embarrassed. “Smallpines perhaps? I hear it’s often full of prey.” Smallpines was a fine hunting grounds, a place where he used to go on his own when the rules weren’t in play. Let’s hope he still remembered where that was.

Blackbird seemed… bothered by something. Maybe he was shy, although he didn’t seem like it. Maybe she was too overbearing. Flowerhawk brushed it off, though. “Smallpines is perfect. I haven’t been there in a little bit.” Excited to leave camp, she grinned and bounded for the exit.

Returning to camp with the prey in his jaws, he placed it in the prey pile. “I probably should nap now… I’m tired from the hunt.” He mewed, booping Flowerhawk’s nose before turning. “I’ll see you later.” He mewed, hoping she’d forget about earlier… the embarrassment. He needed to rest his mind. He hadn’t slept in a few days now that he thought of it… He was surprised he even caught prey…

Flowerhawk dropped her prey next to Blackbird’s. “Sleep tight, don’t let the fleas bite.” She grinned, accepting the nose boop, and responded, “See you later.” Having napped before going out, she decided to go find a relatively sunny spot to bask, although those were hard to come by in leaf-bare. Once she got situated, she zoned out and mulled over the day’s events. Even with the whole confession, it was nice to meet Blackbird, and she looked forward to talking to him again.

The cold was almost too uncomfortable, and it was even worse when you were grooming. Flowerhawk deeply regretted her decision to clean herself outdoors, because even now that she stopped, she could feel the cold seeping through the wetted fur between her toes. Stupid, she thought. It was really stupid, and it wasn’t something she would’ve done had she been in her right state of mind. Something about the encounter with Blackbird the day before had messed with her. She shook her head to clear it, but all that did was shake a little bit of snow off and give her a headache. Or maybe the headache was from her lack of sleep the night before. Or it could be the cold.

Ah, right, the cold. There was something she could do about that, and also her lack of sleep: take a nap in the warm warrior’s den. She loved naps, honestly. They were the greatest things known to catkind. Plus, they could solve any issue, like, ever. She closed her eyes briefly on her way to the den, already relishing the feeling. Which she never got to feel, by the way, because she promptly ran into another cat.
