REDHAWK
she/they | thunderclan hornet | 33 moons
If anyone who saw the hornet fly out of camp was asked if Redhawk had sustained an injury to her paw, their answer would likely be know. Faster than she had moved in a long time the hornet was sprinting out of camp, awkwardly bolting on three legs. Every once in awhile her twisted front paw would hit the ground but the pain only fueled her to keep going.

She knew Swanpaw was near her, and likely would be able to pull ahead of her given that Red knew she was not as fast on three legs as she had been on four. Gritting her teeth the hornet veered around a bramble thicket and made a b-line for the border as she followed Elkpaw's scent train. No, no, no! He was going to ShadowClan's border? She readied herself to cross the log-bridge when she caught sight of her apprentice - with a hulking ShadowClan tom nearby.

Wasting no time she sprang, both claws outstretched as she aimed to shred the pelt of the tom who had done this to her apprentice. She had lost Foxpaw, Cr- Thrushkit had turned out to be a traitor - she would not lose Elkpaw. "G-Get back to camp, SSS-Swanpaw!" she yowled as she closed in on her target. But her jump was miscalculated and instead of landing on the tom she landed just a bit before them. Both paws hit the ground, her twisted one immediately giving way, and sent her face-first into the dirt. A sharp pain shot down her back as Red let out a yelp, trying to scramble back and get her footing before this ShadowClan monster could attack her.

She/Her - They/them

Stars alive! Even on three legs, Redhawk was so fast! The hornet was moving awkwardly, however, the young apprentice made sure to keep up with her. Perhaps, she would’ve been able to overtake the older she-cat, however, she didn’t yet know her way through the territory, and even if she were to follow the scent of her brother’s trail she would risk getting lost.

Following the hornet closely, they nearly went barreling into the thicket – narrowly avoiding a face-full of brambles. Goodness, that was so close! What would Redhawk have said if she got stuck and ended up not being able to help with her brother? Oh no, she was starting to fall behind she had to hurr– Oh.

Stopping dead in her tracks, she saw her brother, bloodied and bruised – leg at an awkward angle. The sight made her sick to her stomach, but the hulking form of an unfamiliar tom scared her witless. Redhawk it seemed, didn’t hesitate. The injured warrior sprang into action immediately, yelling to her to get back to camp. Get back to camp? And leave the two of them with that thing? No! One, she didn’t know her way back to camp so that was out of the question, and two, Redhawk missed! Redhawk did one of her things and fell right on her face, tumbling to the ground the second her twisted paw made contact with the hard surface.

Almost instinctively, Swanpaw scrambled in front of Redhawk in an effort to shield her from a potential blow. Craning her neck, the slightly undersized apprentice let out a loud “eep”, and backed closer to her companion with her ears flattened and her tail tucked behind her legs. ”G-g-g-g-go a-w-w-way!” They stammered, voice coming out unnaturally high as they fought the tremor in their lip. They figured that if she were able to provide Redhawk with just enough time, the hornet would be able to rescue her brother and get out of here. That’s all she could think about (besides the fact that she thought she was going to die). She had to get her brother home safely, Mommy and Daddy would understand, right? It was her duty to protect her older brother, as rambunctious as he was.

Trembling, and by some miracle standing, she raised her voice a little. ”P-p-put-t m-m-my broth-th-th-ther d-down and l-leave u-u-uss a-alone!’ Well… That wasn’t intimidating at all. She squeaked at the beginning of her demand (request) and held her eyes squinted. Oh goodness, she hoped that the other two would be okay.

A small thought came into her mind and she shut their eyes tightly to not show the tears welling within them. ”E-eat m-m-me ins-stead m-mister. J-j-just l-let them g-g-g-g-goWAAAAHHHH” Then she started crying. It was stressful stuff, bargaining for the lives of others at the cost of your own. What would Mommy and Daddy do when they found out their daughter was eaten by some strange cat in order to save their son? Would they come to avenge her? Would they be proud of her for doing something helpful? She didn’t know, but the thought scared her so bad that she couldn’t even put it into words.

It couldn't have been much longer than just a few hours that he was out. Regardless, when Elkpaw stirred as something began to drag him upwards, his tongue felt swollen, his head pounded, and his mouth was dry. Just like before, he couldn't move. The smell of the other cat surrounded him, too similar to his attacker's, to the point he couldn't tell if they were the same cat or different. He didn't want to stick around to find out... but his effort to move was merely a whimper and a jolt of his broken leg.

...Redhawk? And- Swanpaw. He had to be hallucinating. He lifted his head, vision blurring as an unfocused eye, the other swollen shut, shifted up to catch sight of them. Branches scraped against his back as he let his head fall back against the ground a second time. Another hoarse, cracked whimper of, "Red," slipped out.

Maybe this other cat wouldn't kill him (or maybe he would, take care of the agony that flared across his cut and battered body). Maybe Redhawk and Swanpaw would be allowed to take him back and he could see Mama and Papa again.

Where were his Mama and Papa? Why weren't they here?

Mistlewhisker padded out into the territory, listening to the chattering apprentice that yapped in Lostspark's voice. How Lostspark and Darkfall managed to have children with such polarized personalities, she would never know. She imagined the former mates didn't get much sleep during the thirteen's childhood. Stars.

Arriving at Herondive Hollow, the first thing Mistlewhisker noticed was the scent of two outsiders. She held up a tail for the rest of her patrol to stop, parting her jaws to scent the air. It was stale, as though whatever had transpired here had moved on. She frowned, tail twitching behind her. The roots of a large pine tree held the very stale scent of sickness, causing Mistlewhisker to frown. She turned to Lostspark. "Outsiders were here, but they seem to have moved on. I think one of them was sick." She gestured to the roots so the medicine cat could take a sniff if she wanted.

Mistlewhisker jerked her head at the apprentices. "Start marking around here, but do not stray. The border has been left too long." Mistlewhisker began scenting the border herself, keeping an eye on the apprentices while letting Lostspark inspect the tree or move on, whichever she desired. Mistlewhisker did not want outsiders with potential illnesses to invade the territory and get her clanmates sick.

Birdpaw relied on the voices of other cats to express herself, but once she had enough of someone's words, she sure liked to use them. Birdpaw stuck closer to her Mama, chirping enthusiastically about her training and how Fogwatcher was teaching her hunting, and how she was doing super good and Mama should be proud of her and shouldn't worry, she's going to be a great apprentice and do everything her mentor tells her to.

Luckily, the cheery apprentice had the sense to shut up once Big Scary Mistlewhisker held up her tail for silence, the grey apprentice glancing curiously between her Mama and the Enforcer. What was happening? Mistlewhisker called her Mama over, and Birdpaw tried to follow only to be told to start scenting the border with Magpiepaw. Oh, she could do that! "Okie dokie!" She chirped, toddling over to a scent marker that was sorta stale and beginning to rub her chin over it. The rough texture of the bark was nice against her skin! Birdpaw smiled at Magpiepaw, giving the older apprentice a chipper wave of her tail. "Hi! I'm Birdpaw."

Magpiepaw followed suit, having to practically gallop to keep up with the others. Ugh, how horrible it was to be as short as a late blooming tree. Haha, sike! This was awesome! That just meant she'd probably have stronger legs, then she could run twice as fast.

As Mistlewhisker raised her tail, Magpiepaw skidded to a very ungracefully halt. Once the tingling of her paw pads finally stopped, she adjusted her position, raising her head a bit higher as she tried to see what Mistlewhisker made them stop for.

Also, why the heck did it smell like rotting lemons in here? Gross! Outsiders? Dang it, they missed them. Magpiepaw would've loved to rip one of them apart, now that would be a day worth living for!

Oh, instructions. Magpiepaw departed from the two older cats as she made her way to the border markers. It was almost concerning how faded and dull they were. They smelt nothing of Shadowclan. The small she-cat wrinkled her nose at the sight before practically rolling in the markers, shaking her pelt every so often to rid it of dirt.

Then Birdpaw was talking to her. Well, of course she was, Magpiepaw was very interesting, probably the best cat to talk to in the whole world. "Heya," she smiled toothily at the other apprentice. This cat seemed to be spilling rays of sunshine right from her maw. Magpiepaw wondered if the she-cat had gotten into a fight before or if she could handle one. "Nice to meet."

Unfortunately, Lostspark had headed off further along the border to mark it after letting Mistlewhisker know that whatever illness threat that'd been perceived was no longer around. So of course, by the time she had circled back, she'd completely missed Birdpaw having nommed on anything.

Only a while later did she start to notice something off, when Birdpaw caught up to her to lean against her as they walked. Lostspark had nothing against the action, so she wrapped her tail around her daughter without thought. Until Magpiepaw caught up to them too as Birdpaw began to sag more and more. Bewildered at her daughter's sudden sleepy state (was she not getting enough sleep??), Lostspark's ears pricked at the other apprentice's words.

Birdpaw had WHAT?

Amber gaze darting from Magpiepaw to Mistlewhisker and then to her daughter, Lostspark gently handed Birdpaw over to the latter and whisked away with a "don't let her fall asleep" called over her shoulder.

Times like this were when Lostspark was most grateful that her sight had returned, no matter how unconventional the means. Sure, she could have still navigated this route blind - she made it a point to know ShadowClan's grounds by heart - but sight was something that could not be replaced. Retracing their steps to where she'd seen and taken note of a merry frond of white flowers growing from the ground, Lostspark ripped two yarrow out of the ground in her haste, not bothering to halt as she whipped around and bolted back.

"Baby bird, love, I need you to eat this." She told her daughter, presenting her with one of the clustered flowers. "It's not going to feel good, I know, but please?"

And only once the yarrow works its purpose and her daughter has thrown up what she'd eaten does the medicine cat relax, sagging with relief. She had an inkling of what the twigs Birdpaw had consumed did, but regardless, she wasn’t willing to risk it.

Storage is equal for the two herbs so neither is more dire and both serve a relatively important medical role, if you can more out between the three of you so that no herb is slighted in gathering,” with that said Mossfreckle moved through the underbrush gathering as he went, tall lines had faded to a mere spattering as oak trees began to loom above them on thick trunked, wide branched canopies that dappled the verdant surroundings with gilded sun light, stopping his oriental shaped head the medicine cat apprentice grabbed some oak leaves near the border before trotting away from the unseen line and snagging some moss of of a low hanging branch as he stretched his forelimbs up to lift his head to nip the think filament leafs that clung to the bark. The patrol stayed in his peripheral all the while, mossy hues flittering between the three felines as he worked, his feathery tail flicked idly on contentment as he sat and waited for his patrol mates to gather their haul before they headed back to the safe confines of the Shadowclan territory and back to the camp where he would once again sit before the Shadowledge and settle watchful mossy hues onto the returned and returning cats.

As Mossfreckle spread away, so did the young apprentice, looking through the nooks and crannies of the territory as she first sought moss - that ought to be the easiest to find. And it was; though prying it apart ripped some of the moss, it was an easy find, and the apprentice took the time to mull over the description the medicine cat had given of oak leaves. It had a rather silly shape, she would soon find, and much unlike the pines of the pine forest; much softer, as was apparent. Her paws had led her through the vast amount of trees, neatly picking out the best looking leaves she could find - they weren't big, she would discover, making them easy to carry. Without much further dilly dallying and unfortunately unable to carry any more, the young Sleepypaw would idly return to where the group had first parted; there is where she would find Mossfreckle, already waiting. She hadn't seen the rest of their patrol since their departure, much to the apprentice's disgruntlement, meaning they would have to wait until they appeared. Taking a stand at a respectful from the medicine cat's side, Sleepypaw was silent for some time, silently observing her findings as her mind mulled over its use; moss, she assumed, could be used for comfort... Cleaning, maybe? And she had seen the forever queen use it to carry water for young kits before, when they couldn't quite yet reach the stream. The leaves were a bit more of mystery; she could imagine it being used to cover something, wounds, perhaps, but it left one to wonder what for. She had never needed to visit the medicine cat's den before for any particular injury, much to her benefit, but it left her clueless in the aspect of what did what with the exception of the two poisons Mossfreckle had taught the kits of the clan some moons ago. Vibrant blue eyes swiveled towards the medic at that, watching him for a moment with an air of subtle curiosity, an air she never quite admitted to. She blinked slowly, clearly thinking; but they were waiting anyway.
"What do they do?"
The words tumble from her mouth like a quiet gust of wind, not quite protruding, yet wondering all the same. Was it common place, or even acceptable, to ask such a thing? Few warriors besides the medicine cats seemed to know of herbs and yet the apprentice was left wondering why; it couldn't be part of their usual curriculum, then, but was there not use in knowing the basics in the event of an emergency? Would Mossfreckle shun her for daring to question him about the use of what she was meant to gather? Did so many warriors truly gather what they were told to without ever wondering what they were meant to do, what their purpose was? It was all quite puzzling, truthfully; the proper etiquette between the search of knowledge and overstepping boundaries.

Hillstrider padded along with Mossfreckle, Sleepypaw and Bitternpaw, the sun radiating off his orange pelt. They had taken a while to leave camp, but the large tom didn't mind. It meant he could sit by Mossfreckle and chatter away at the medicine cat without being interrupted. Not that he minded being interrupted for something important, it was just hard for him to keep a train of thought once it had been broken.

The symphony of animal sounds that echoed among the tall pine trees kept Hillstrider's good mood rolling, and the young warrior let his attention drift from one thing to another. It was weird not talking as the patrol headed out, but neither Bitternpaw nor Sleepypaw talked much, and while Hillstrider normally didn't have a sense of embarassment, he didn't want to monopolize Mossfreckle's time.

Once they arrived at the border and were given instructions, Hillstrider turned his slightly less diligent orange paws towards a small pile of leaves that had accumulated at the bottom of a tree trunk. He found himself entranced by the beautiful colors, reminded of how lovely the ThunderClan side of the border looked during Leaffall. It was partially the reason why Leaffall was his favorite season--the leaves looked like him! He could blend in easily, unlike during the other seasons when his sunny orange fur stuck out like a sore toe bean.

Hillstrider ended up picking the two most pretty leaves, the only thought in his head being that Mossfreckle deserved only the prettiest of leaves.

[Hillstrider gained +3 oak leaves!]

Next was moss. Of course Hillstrider was going to get moss for Mossfreckle! The orange tom had never thought much of moss before he met the medicine cat, but now he had a newfound appreciation for it. Moss wasn't hard to find, even though clawmarks and missing chunks of the soft green stuff showed previous herb patrols had been looking for the stuff. It was so cool to see hints of past patrols here; it reminded Hillstrider that ShadowClan was a totally tubular community that worked together to function! So cool!

[Hillstrider gained +2 moss!]

With his mouth full of plants, Hillstrider trotted over to his friend and the apprentices, giving Mossfreckle a big goofy grin around his moss and leaves.

Magpiepaw had never been more freaked out in her life. She could handle a cat being skinned, it wasn't that big of a deal, she could handle watching somecat being malled by a dog, they probably deserved it anyways. Magpiepaw could handle almost anything life threw at her, but when Birdpaw spoke it was like she was hearing an eerily similar echo out of a maw that wasn't her own. Irish accent and all, voice cracks aligned perfectly. Magpiepaw curled up her spine and stood on her toes as her fur bristled wildly. Despite her want to be oh so mature and professional, she snarled at the younger apprentice, her lips curled unforgivingly.

It didn't really matter though, because Birdpaw had found something else worth freaking out. A sweet aroma wafted in the air as the other apprentice dug around in the brambles. Ugh, it was too sweet, it smelled nothing of the metallic blood that she liked to taste in her prey, it almost smelt artificial to her nose. Regardless of how suspicious this whole thing was, Birdpaw still ate it. Psh, what an idiot.

Oh-uh, where those forbidden herbs of some sort? Birdpaw had suddenly slowed her pace. At first, Magpiepaw scoffed and assumed she was faking. Maybe that was just something this cat was good at, faking and manipulating cats so that she could steal their identity and then give their souls as gifts to the Darkforest. Well, Magpiepaw was smarter than that, she wasn't fooled!

But then Birdpaw got really tired, and Magpiepaw began to doubt if she was actually putting up a front. No one could be sleepy while on a border between Thunderclan, the enemy. Magpiepaw gave the markers a few more good rubs before galloping up to Birdpaw, looking at Lostspark.

"Birdpaw ate something," Magpiepaw flicked her gaze at the stick Birdpaw had dropped (for some reason). She trotted back to the stick and was assaulted by it's sweet scent. Ughhhh.... She picked it up and avoided licking the pouring dew from off her chin as it drop drip dropped so annoyingly onto her recently groomed fur. "I have no idea what it is, but I know it smells disgust--- sweet. You're the medicine cat, or at least you were. Any idea what this is?"

Mistlewhisker glanced over as she saw Magpiepaw fluff up in horror, only to see that it was the young Ark kit she was growling at. Mistlewhisker eyed the little tabby, knowing that out of the many Ark children, that one was..... weird. She didn't think anything of it, as both Birdpaw and Magpiepaw separated, the latter looking very bewildered.

As Lostspark circled back and Mistlewhisker finished her marking, she noticed the two apprentices crowded by Lostspark, noting Birdpaw's slumped form. The deputy padded over as Lostspark's voice carried through the air, only to recieve the little apprentice shoved against her as Lostspark hurried away to find something. Mistlewhisker stared down at Birdpaw, seeing her sleepiness and staring incredulously at her. What had happened?? "Don't let her fall asleep" Lostspark had ordered. Mistlewhisker wrapped a paw around the apprentice and kept her upright, nudging her every time she slumped slightly.

Lostspark returned with yarrow, giving it to her daughter and watching. Mistlewhisker helped her stay upright, looking away as she expelled whatever she ate.

Once she was done, she looked to Magpiepaw. "Did you see what she ate?"

So sleepy... Birdpaw merely hummed as Mama wrapped her tail around her back. She slipped in and out of snoozing, feeling paws push her to and fro, a new scent overwhelming her but not mattering as she drifted further into a doze. Soon Mama returned with a yucky smelling plant, and Birdpaw resisted tiredly before giving in and eating it.

Not a heartbeat after she had consumed whatever the yucky plant was she crouched close to the ground, heaving up the contents of her stomach.

After it subsided, Birdpaw groaned and blinked sleepily, though the fog over her brain was lessening. Looking up at her mother, Birdpaw made a sad noise. "Wha was that for?" She asked in a replica of Lostspark's voice. "So yucky."

"So yucky."

"Don't let her fall asleep."

Magpiepaw swallowed a scoff. Easy for her to say, Birdpaw was already on her way to dream town! She watched with an odd expression as Mistlewhisker asked what she ate.

Are.

You.

Kidding.

The stick was RIGHT HERE, IN HER JAWS. Are these cats blind or what? Magpiepaw only twitched her nose, the only sign of her annoyance apart from the steady flick of the tip of her tail. She dropped the stick at the enforcers paws. Thick and heavy droplets beaded on the twig like dew. Magpiepaw still didn't know what the heck this thing was. Lostspark never did answer her question. What was it with her and getting ignored today?! So unfair!

"This. She didn't eat the twig of course, but she ate the sappy stuff on it." Magpiepaw lifted her head up. Man, she'd have to take a bath in the river to get rid of this crap. Ughhhh... "Almost immediately after she got ahold of it she started acting all sluggish and funny." Brown eyes flicked back to Birdpaw with an expression that showed a reluctant concern. This cat wasnt about to take her soul, not even if she was moons younger than her and practically "helpless".

She opened her mouth to say a few more words before the sickening scent of puke entered. Magpiepaw stood to the tip of her toes, nostrils flared. It was a quick and easy process, at least Birdpaw wasn't hagging or anything. The yarrow was obviously used as something to make Birdpaw throw up. Lostspark probably knew a cats body couldn't handle yarrow and rejected it along with anything else they might've eaten or swallowed recently. Magpiepaw gave the herbalist a quick glance of curiosity and even awe.

But then the little demon had to open her mouth. At first, Magpiepaw thought that Lostspark was talking, but that would be pretty odd considering the she-cat wasn't even moving her muzzle in that simple open and close motion. And of course it was Birdpaw, her abilities coming back to haunt her. Stars it was so wrong, sooo wrong. Nocat should be able to do that, oh my goodness...

It had of course startled her and Magpiepaw leaped at least 4 feet in the air. When she quickly came back down, her fur was as prickly as a cactus, her toe beans sprawled out like newly budding flowers. This cat was going to be the death of any good reputation she had in this clan.

Oak leaves and moss were easy enough to track down. The borders were of no concern to him. He'd just stay away from them unless there was a really nice looking piece of moss nearby.

[ Bitternpaw rolled a 19 to look for moss. ]

Not needing to get too close to the border the young apprentice manages to find a nice patch of brightly colored moss. The color causes him to tilt his head momentarily but he decides that moss is moss. If Mossfreckle had a problem with the color of it then he'd look for more later. But for now he's pawing it up from the earth and collecting it into a pile to take between his jaws.

[ Bitternpaw rolled a 14 to look for oak leaves. ]

The moss he had collected was so conveniently growing against the bark of a tree. An oak tree, to be exact. How lucky. Scouring the ground further away from where he had collected the moss, he is able to procure a few leaves to add to his growing horde, tail raised high as he trots back over to the group that had finished their gathering.

"I have finished. Apologies for the wait." He mumbles around the herbs between his jaws.

[ +5 moss, +3 oak leaves ]

Silently picking up the stick Magpiepaw had dropped on the floor, Lostspark held that in her maw along with the one yarrow that remained. She inclined her head, silently motioning that it was probably best they head back now that the crisis had been averted. It seemed she had a new herb to study more thoroughly once they returned home.

[ Short reply, sorry - just did not want to hold you guys up again ]
