"I know that too," Alderstep replied, turning his next words over in his mouth, feeling that exhaustion kick into his mind. Stupid. "Because she was." Never mind he hadn't ordered her to go, that wasn't the point. He'd ordered that anyone there send the 'paws back should the foxes be too much. Which they had. Obviously. Stop stating the obvious and start being less redundant. "I took seven others with me. It wasn't enough. I hadn't thought of their ages when taking them with me. And as I said. Spiderthroat took over, told me to return back." To think over how utterly idiotic he was, or roughly around those words.
And StarClan's name was nothing but dirt in his mouth and a sour aftertaste of smoke in his lungs. Alderstep twitched again, inhaling slowly and silently as the protests of his aching body got louder.
Maybe Bumblestar would hit him again. Like Spiderthroat. He'd never expected to acquire scars from his clanmates. Twisted and grotesque, not because claws scored them but because he'd become such a failure to them that 'clan' meant nothing. Rightfully so.

"I can't even believe you right now." Bumblestar's hackles lifted again as she snarled at him.
"Oughta smack you again hard enough to rattle that rock you call a brain against your skull. They're practically kits, Alderstep! How do you not think of their ages?"
What he said about Spiderthroat made her want to bark out a laugh, but she couldn't even muster that.
"I don't give a flying rat’s ass WHAT Spiderthroat told you to do! He’s not in charge of you! Take some damn authority for once - I put you in charge of that patrol, not him! When cats are injured, you stay back and help!"
Her claws shredded through grass and dirt as she started to shoulder past him.
"You don't deserve the deputy title. Starting right now, you're done with that. I won't let stupidity and ignorance fester in my Clan. Stay here 'n think about the things you've done today, I don't trust you back at the ravine."
Without another glance in his direction she slipped out of the camp's entrance.
