Luck wasn't in Wolfhive's cards today.
The fisher did the opposite of what he hoped - instead of falling, it launched itself away and tore itself from his grasp in the process. The unexpected force unbalanced him, and he couldn't recover in time -- he lost his grip.
"Dung!" A simple curse was all he could utter as he wildly grabbed at the trunk, his claws sliding uselessly against the bark without getting hold. A piece of bark chipped beneath his claws, a testament to how sheerly unfortunate this was.
.. and his eyes could only widen when he saw where he was headed. Most trees, you were greeted by the ground - but Wolfhive was staring into the abyss. A void of nothing, the empty pit that'd killed before and it seemed to be gunning for him. The yowl that escaped him felt like it came from some other source, like it wasn't him, and Wolfhive continued to thrash - trying to grab hold of
something,
anything, to stop the fall.
It took mere seconds for him to be within the mouth of the sinkhole, leaving little chance for recovery. The world was a blur as he tried to grab hold of the sides, finding purchase in any nook, root, cranny -- anything, but it crumbled.
Was this the end? Wolfhive had faced death a few times in his life, but nothing felt quite as dire as falling in the void.
And then the world faded to black as the sinkhole consumed him.
