Learning to fish

This takes place at cattail pond after the fire in Thunderclan’s camp while Thunderclan is taking shelter at Riverclan’s cattail pond.

Ivorypaw couldn’t stand just sitting around now that the den was finished waiting to be asked to do something, so the 10 moon old apprentice made her way to the other side of the pond to think while watching the fish swim, since she had been here in Riverclan she had tried a fish and quite enjoyed it. After a while just watching she wish she decided to attempt to catch one. She had absolutely no idea how to hunt fish so she waded into the shallow water and using her paws tried to slam them down on the fish as she swam under her. They didn’t come near her so she tried holding still with her unsheathed claw in the water hoping a fish would swim into her claws, fox dung. she thought getting annoyed that she couldn’t catch a fish. She probably looked quite ridiculous jumping around in the water splashing everywhere.

Admittedly, Firehawk had been a little curious about the ThunderClan situation and wanted to check things out for himself.

Of course, by doing so he had to keep reminding himself he probably shouldn't bother the survivors too much. As much as he enjoyed interacting with others, perhaps now wasn't the time as he approached the pond. Although.. his attention was caught by the apprentice splashing around in the water like a fish on land, and against his better judgement he headed over with some amusement. "What are you doing, sugar?"

Ivorypaw was caught by surprise of the Riverclan tom, she turned around stopping splashing eyes wide,” I was uhh....trying to catch a fish since I’m no use to my clan hunting regular prey.” she confessed, she had absolutely no clue how to fish, and thought you chased it like a rabbit in the pond, as she’d drown doing the hunter’s crouch under water.

"What do you mean you're no use hunting other prey?" Firehawk questioned, his voice gentle. "You don't have to answer if you're not comfortable, I'm just wondering." He didn't want to be prying.. it was just an odd statement to make. "I can show you how to fish, but we'll want to move away from this spot. You've probably scared all the fish away from this side of the pond!"

Ivorypaw gave the warrior a sheepish look,” Well...I don’t want to kill other prey, that prey has family, and I wouldn’t want to lose my father, so I assume my prey would be missed by there family, but fish don’t have emotions so it’s okay to kill them, I think.“ she meowed wading out of the water grateful to the Riverclan tom.

This was.. concerning to say the least, but Firehawk decided to not question whatever ThunderClan was teaching their kids.

Plopping down a ways from where she'd been splashing around, he flicked his tail to encourage her to join him. "An interesting perspective!" He'd leave it at that. "Sit beside me, and keep your shadow out of the water. The key to fishing is a quick paw and a lot of patience. If you jump on it too soon, you'll scare the fish away or miss it."

Ivorypaw carefully sat down carefully adjusting herself to keep her shadow off the water,” Alright. That makes sense.“ she meowed. This was much different than her attempt at fishing, and hopefully he’d be accurate,” Oh, I forgot to ask your name. I’m Ivorypaw.“ she meowed.

She seemed to catch on quickly, so Firehawk took that as a sign to continue. "If your patient enough, the fish comes right to you." As he spoke, he watched one of the silvery animals swim toward the edge of the pond, and quick as a whip, Firehawk plunged his paw in the water just above the fish. His claws snagged onto the scales and he flipped the wiggling creature onto the bank, pinning it and killing it with a bite to the neck.

"Easy as that! Always aim above the fish-- the water is deceptive; where you think the fish is at a glance isn't quite accurate. Use your claws to hook it so you can pull it out." He beckoned her to try, a low purr rumbling in his throat. "Name's Firehawk, it's nice to meet you Ivorypaw!"

Ivorypaw watched carefully as Firehawk caught the fish, what he did seemed simple to her so she decided to attempt it. She waited in silence watching for a fish to come near, when she spotted a fish she shot her paw in, she felt the fish and flipped up out of the water, but if wriggled free as she sent it flying out of the water, right back in the water,” Sorry.“ she meowed, knowing she messed up catching the prey.

"Don't be," Firehawk chuckled softly. "You're learning-- that's all that matters. Try it again; you'll get it after some practice."

Getting his pelt ruffled over a young cat training was dumb.

He waited for another fish to cross his path before he hooked it like the last one, flipping it onto the bank and killing it.
