Mumble was hungry. I mean, they were usually hungry. But today, their stomach grumbled with a new anger, a horrible sound that seemed it would never end unless they were fed. Mumble had heard the dangers of these parts of the woods, and knew there were cats living around here.. but what was the danger if they were careful?...
At this point, they were desperate enough to cross into the odd smelling territory, where smells tangled together like a mat of fur.

patrolling had long since become a daily activity rookfire didnt spend much thought on. he was required to earn his keep and if it meant just walking around a bunch every day, he wouldnt complain. most of the times, nothing happened anyway, and when something did, it had been more entertaining than anything. his promotion (or was it a demotion since his rank description included 'apprentice' again, silly) hadnt changed a thing, though he wasnt quite sure how happy dawnstar was about this, given the actions she had taken to ensure mossfreckles safety during the time in between.. well, he'd find out soon enough if this was something to make the queen of mean unhappy.
a brief shake of his head to chase away the thought spiral he had almost slipped into and the tom opened his maw to take in more smells, tasting the air for any prey around. the first scent the former enforcer picked up was that of a rat which caused him to wrinkle his nose and turn the other way. after the yellowtwist situation, rookfire wasnt too keen on wrestling with a rat, or even worse, a whole bunch of them. he'd rather catch a frog, no matter how gross their slimy nature really was to him. it was quite silly that he was looking for prey now of all times but oh well. he also shouldnt realistically be this picky when selecting a animal to track down but there wasnt really anyone to tell him what to do right now so no one would find out anyway.
the second scent he picked up wasnt prey tho, it was clearly another cat and close at that. their scent strong and fresh in the air, rookfire assumed a hunter crouch, pushing himself closer and closer whilst keeping his steps light until the undergrowth parted and he could see the cat. brown and white, rather small, alone. rookfire stepped out and into the light, revealing himself to the outsider before speaking up, "im gonna have ta' ask you to leave, now." striped tail twitching periodically behind him, the larger and darker feline waited for their reaction, offering a cat so young the benefit of the doubt.

Mumble's hackles raised out of surprise, hissing slightly as the older cat as they appeared.
"Wh?- Huh?" They responded, at a loss for words as they fearfully looked up, stepping with their flank facing the cat. They were ready to bolt if needed, but they were so confused. Why did they have to leave? There were so many cats here! Surely one more wouldn't be bad? They wondered, however they couldn't put it into words...

rookfire sighed at the smaller felines obvious confusion. he couldnt personally understand how they didnt know about the clans and could so easily ignore their border markings, but they were barely more than a kit and rookfire had regrettably always been a bit too lenient with outsiders that didnt know any better. faint memories of his first run in with fadingsun ghosted around the back of his mind. the severely injured outsider, thick sour scent of fox and coppery blood so fresh in his memory he could almost taste it, fadingsuns anger. rookfires disappointment, in fadingsun, riverclan, the lack of regard for the warrior code. werent they supposed to help defenceless kits?..even if those rules were no more than lies, a bleeding kit was as much of a fox or badger or stars forbid, dog, bait as it gets and he still, to this day, couldnt believe fadingsun had decided to let the outsider bleed out instead of helping or moving them to the outskirts. a small shake of his head, rookfire focussed back on the chocolate furred outsider, "ight buddy imma be generous today. you're on shadowclan grounds, we dont accept outsiders ta' just show up here. the border is over there n you didnt know which is fine for now but if ya cross again or refuse to leave i will make ya." rookfire instructed, claws retracting and taking a step towards the stranger in order to accompany them back to the border. despite letting down his defences on the outside, the medic kept on high alert, knowing he could overwhelm them easily but not willing to take any chances in case there were more of their sort hiding somewhere out there.
