The tom yawned as he padded towards the apprentices den. Early bird catches the worm...and what else likes worms? Fish! Today, he would be taking Cricketpaw and Rainpaw on a little fishing expedition. The pair had requested this separately, but it would make more sense to do it together for now.

"Cricketpaw! Rainpaw! Come along now. We're heading towards the river." Brokenstream called into the den, tail tip twitching before he backed out and waited nearby.

The energetic young she-cat didn't need to be asked twice. With Rosehawk having taken her on three patrols total, she was more than likely to gain her warriors name by the time she was elder aged. Slipping out from beneath the shade, Cricket'Paw attempted to look like this was completely normal for her.
"Normally" trotting up to Brokenstream, she may have had light spring in her step a couple times back there. oops... but she stared up at the warrior's face. It was an increasingly odd angle, she hadn't realized or more likely hadn't taken the time to notice that multiple other cats were taller than her.
"Hi!" it came out very similar to a squeak, and she amended it, not wanting to seem kit like. "Hello!"

Rainpaw leapt to her paws when she heard her name. She turned her head to smooth out her fur, wincing at her sister’s jealous glare. Rainpaw touched her muzzle to Ravenpaw’s forehead in apology before carefully walking around her still sleeping denmates. She stood next to Cricketpaw, flashing her fellow -paw a warm and timid smile, and looking at Brokenstream with excited, expectant eyes.

Nodding a greeting to the pair, Brokenstream turned and began heading towards the camp entrance. "C'mon. Your fishing lesson is today." He explained as he padded off, glancing back to check that the apprentices were following. "There's a river not far. Do you both know how to swim yet?"

Plain and simple, she could float, but swimming, she'd never had an official lesson. Pinning hack her ears in embarrassment, she timidly shook her head at the warrior.
"I've floated in shallow streams, but Rosehawk hasn't given me a lesson yet."

Rainpaw’s long whiskers twitched thoughtfully.
“I’ve done some of the basics with Foxleap.” She mewed.


[OOC: Her swimming lesson is actually going on simultaneously to this one LOL, so I have no idea yet if she’ll be a good swimmer yet or no. I’m going for yes though!]

The tom stared at the two apprentices apprehensively, but continued with a shrug. "Well, you shouldn't necessarily need to know how to swim to fish, but you're going to want to learn how to fish in the water later. Come see me again for that particular training later once you've been taught by your mentors." He mewed finally, beginning to head out towards the river.

"Come on."

After a few minutes, they arrived at the shore of the river. "Okay, you two. First thing's first- your shadow." Brokenstream began explaining, settling himself on the edge of the water. "Fish, although still pretty dumb, have instincts. If they see your shadow, they're going to swim away. You want to either angle yourself in an already existing shadow, or in a way that the sun won't cast yours." He instructed, looking expectantly at the pair.

Nodding, with a small sense of confidence, she adjusted her stance by the river, carefully making sure to pin her tail, and awkwardly sticking her head over the water and opening her jaws.
“Like this?”

Rainpaw nodded eagerly at Brokenstream’s instructions, following him up to the river. Resisting the urge to simply leap in the water, Rainpaw blinked up at the sky to see the position of the sun. Whiskers twitching thoughtfully, she studied how the shadows were laying and re-angled herself until her shadow was casted away from the river. “Is this good?” She asked, echoing Cricketpaw’s question. Eyes blinking at Brokenstream expectantly.

His whiskers twitching was the only thing to give away his amusement at Cricketpaw's stance. "You can relax a bit. If you sit stiff like that, the fish are going to be able to swim right past you before you can react." He purred, nudging the apprentice gently with a paw. He glanced at Rainpaw. "Excellent!" He mewed with an approving nod. Looking back at Cricketpaw, he gave the young apprentice a warm blink. "Don't worry, you're RiverClan! You'll be a natural by the end of the day." The Lionheart mewed encouragingly.

"Now, while you readjust, watch closely." Doing as he explained early, the tom positioned himself in the preexisting shadow of a tree, eyes fixed intently on the water. Without moving, he whispers to the apprentices. "Patience is key here. Fish know we hunt here, but they're still to dumb to be too cautious. They'll come to the shore as well, thankfully, since neither of you can swim yet." After a few moments of ticking silence, Brokenstream flashed out a paw into the water, scooping two minnows onto the bank next to him. A mrrow of satisfaction escaped him. "Fishing is one of the most fun things RiverClan cats can do- and once you learn how to swim, fishing in the water is even more fun." He gaze curiously at the two she-cats. "Any questions so far?"
