Clan Names Guide
To help members name their characters within Roleplay Guidelines, this guide details the restrictions on naming for both Clan-born cats and Outsiders.
Official Names List
Names have been approved using the following parameters:
- It is an unspecialized name used in the books.
- It is naturally occurring within Maine and the surrounding area OR it is very widespread throughout the USA.
- It is an adjective relating to a character’s appearance, personality, or ability attributes.
- It is NOT unnecessarily or excessively wordy; a manufactured material; conceptual or abstract; any uncommon scientifically organized name; or anything feral cats would not feasibly know of.
Leaders reserve the right to accept or deny names as they see fit, including but not limited to: outsiders who wish to keep their names; names they deem inappropriate for their Clan; or names they simply do not like.
Clan-born Cats
These are cats that are born into a Clan, and have no history of being a kittypet, loner, or rogue.
- Names must be English only.
- Names can only be of something native to the United States, and can not be the scientific name. Plants that share a name with the scientific version are not an exception.
- Avoid names that cats would not be aware of or know what it means. Keep color names limited to what was used in the books, and pay attention to why they were used. 'Pink Eye' for example, was an albino rogue in the beginning of the Clans before many traditions were in place.
- Names can be changed at any time at the leader's discretion.
- Clan names used within the books are fair game, with the exception of 'specialized names' (e.g. Harveystorm, Billyface) unless the leader cites a specific reason for the specialization.
Outsiders
These are cats that have joined the Clan later in life. Ages can range anywhere from kits to elders, but they have no personal Clan history.
Cats with an outsider history need to have meaningfully roleplayed as an outsider prior to joining the Clan.
- Names must be English only upon joining a Clan.
- Names do not need to be native to the United States, however names that do not fall within the conventional naming system can be changed at the leader's discretion.
- Names used within the books are fair game, with the exception of 'specialized names' (e.g. Harveystorm, Billyface) unless the leader cites a specific reason for the specialization.
