The moment he had heard his heart sank into his stomach. It wasn’t true. He didn’t believe it. His legs shook and his eyes were wide and blurry. “N-no. It’s not true. It’s not true.” he growled out, feeling his airway getting tighter. But another part of him knew it was. Of course she saved a kit she didn’t even know, that mouse brain! How could she leave him. Why would she leave him? He couldn’t take the weight anymore. He collapsed to the ground, shielding his face as a river of tears streamed from his eyes. “I-it’s not true. Y-y-you liar! She’s not gone!” he sobbed through frantic breaths. Fuzz filled his mind, unable to process her death. He couldn’t even pay back everything he owed her! She couldn’t leave yet!

“B-Bristley…I still want you here…I still need you! Wh-who will teach me now?…” he hyperventilated, shoving away any cat who came to comfort him. “You LIARS! She’s not GONE!” he snarled, his eyes narrowing into anger and backing away from the crowd.

He didn't know how this could be possible. She was laying right there. Why won't she cuddle me like she always doess? A frigid breeze blew through the den. He shivered and moved closer to her. She doesn't have to keep me warm but I will keep her warm. He shivered and brushed her with his muzzle. She was frozen. He looked at her confused. "Momma? Are you to cold?" He waited for her to respond like she always did but she didn't. "Momma?" He tried again. Did she not hear me?

He dragged his cold shaking paws around to see her face. Her eyes were closed. "Momma? Why are you just sleeping there? Why won't you answer me?" His heart pounded she never slept in this long. "Momma, why won't you wake up?" He burrowed his head into his chest. "Momma? Why... Why is it so quiet? Why can't I feel your breath?" He started to panic. "Momma wake up!" He pushed her with his paws trying to wake her. Momma has never been such a deep sleeper. "Momma! Please wake up!" Tears started to drown his eyes. His heart tried to brake free from it's cage. "I don't understand? Why won't you wake up? Why won't you hug me? I don't understand.” His tiny frozen paws fell back to the ground."Have you gone to see papa now?" He looked down at his trembling paws. "I'm sorry I couldn't keep you warm." His tears served only to make him colder. "If.. if you come back I'll try harder!" He started to wail at the sky. "I Promise I'll try harder so please... PLEASE come back!"

Vinepaw lay in the corner of the apprentice den, his body curled up tightly as if trying to make himself disappear. The flickering light of the dying embers in the hearth barely reached his darkened fur, casting long, sorrowful shadows on the wall. His thoughts churned like a stormy sea, tossing him further into a pit of despair.

The whispers of his Clanmates outside, their lively chatter and laughter, felt like a cruel reminder of a world he no longer felt part of. Every now and then, the sound of their joy seeped through the walls, only to be swallowed up by the heaviness that weighed on his chest. The more he heard, the more he felt like a ghost—present but invisible, connected but distant.

His days had become a blur of endless gray, with each morning feeling like an insurmountable obstacle. Training sessions that once ignited a spark within him now seemed like an endless loop of effort and failure. The more he tried to push himself, the more he felt as if he was sinking deeper into a chasm with no way out.

The loneliness was suffocating. Even the comforting presence of his fellow apprentices, their occasional glances and friendly nudges, did nothing to ease the cold emptiness that settled in his heart. He wanted to reach out, to share the darkness that clung to him, but fear and shame kept him locked away, a prisoner of his own sorrow.

Vinepaw closed his eyes, hoping for a moment of peace, but all he found was the relentless ache of sadness. The stars outside twinkled faintly through the gaps in the den’s walls, distant and indifferent, as if mocking his inability to reach for them. In that small, shadowed corner, he felt utterly alone, yearning for a day when the weight of his heart might finally lift.
