Thriftfall
@Alchemist Kitsune @Ravenswings @Katiethewolfchild

All Thriftfall wanted to do was sit down and just die. Which was a horrible thing to want. But the pain and the thought of never seeing again felt like a stab to his heart. He could never hunt, fight or battle again. At least for a long time. He might be hundreds of moons old until he got used to being blind. Who knows, Maybe when he finally dies, he'll be able to see again.

His throat burned and his shoulder felt a bit twisted. The throat pain had gotten worse when Lightningstorm shoved some crumbly substance down his throat. He felt like he was going to choke to death. He had no clue or no context to what was going on. Did Lightingstorm decide he wasn't fixable? Was she trying to end his suffering? He wouldn't dare fight back if that was the case.

After the whole forcefully feeding him some kind of Seeds? Root? Rock? Thriftfall was left there gasping for air. His tail shaking and quivering with pain as numbness slowly washed over him. He felt like his throat was closing in, but at the same time he felt sleepy.

All he could think about were his eyes. Which made the pain and thought of loosing them forever unbearable. So unbearable, is that he started crying. His eyes burned and flared up again when blood mixed with tears, and all he could do was silently weep.

He slowly cried himself to sleep.

Lightningstorm remained quiet, her narrowed eyes the only response she gave Hollowfoot as she cleaned away his wound. He wasn't the first cat she'd heard bring up the Dark Forest, but in her experience, those who spoke of it didn't take long to break and become murderers. There had been only one exception in her life to this rule, and he had vanished. She didn't know what had happened to him. He wouldn't say. She understood the Dark Forest, much like StarClan, could not hurt you. Not physically. Beyond a few nightmare fueled terrors, the cats were all talk. True, they could make dreams a hellscape, but nothing compared to the night terrors she had been experiencing her entire life. Milknose had been different, however. Softer. More emotional. No doubt easier to break.

Placing the poultice on the tom's injury, she slathered it evenly, knowing the herb was proper useful for helping seal wounds of this magnitude. Still, cobwebs wouldn't hurt, and soon enough the injury was well bandaged. It might sting for a few days, maybe even itch, but nothing worth spending even more herbs on. Besides, the warrior's words still echoed in her head, reminding her all too well of the warning she had been given by the StarClan queen. The one who had answered her the last day Cowtuft had been welcomed here. It was clear that the Dark Forest was up to something. Had they seen promise in this one? Had he gained that injury while following orders from some star shunned rat? Or had he started down a dark path already, and had been wanting to see just how far he could go down it before the threat of being dragged to hell became all to real for him?

"The Dark Forest is the place where your clan's murderers and traitors go to. The cats who liked to play with the lives of others as though they were little more than prey. It's were every cat who did not abide by the warriors' code eventually finds themselves. Your wounds have been patched now, haven't they? If that will be all, you are free to leave. We are done here," she mewed, her gaze deadpanned as she met the tom's cautious glance with her own stormy stare.

Hollowfoot dipped his head respectfully in thanks. "I see. Thank you for your time, Lightningstorm."

He glanced at the she-cat's wary eyes, before turning. Despite what he had encountered, he had been promised that StarClan would not turn him away... Why had a cat like the one he'd met been there? Was the warrior code some afterlife law?

As he slunk out the den's entrance he winced at a sting on his face.
For you... I would give up StarClan regardless. If that's what it takes for this to work... what's one compared to all the others? Especially me...

Elkgrowl's cold eyes flickered in his mind.

A moon.

The words echoed about her mind, tossed and tumbled violently as lapis hues stormed with ire, hackles raising as she realized the implications of the matter. A moon... A moon ago, the supposed plague had hit them. Cowtuft had still been with them. Cowtuft had been the head healer, with her still learning his ways. True, she had already earned her name, but she would never stop seeing the gentle giant as her mentor. There was always so much more to learn. Case in point... just how idiotic a WindClanner could be!

Without a word, Lightningstorm heads forward, grabbing at the feline's forepaw unceremoniously. Despite her anger, her touch is gentle. Expert. She might not trust this clan to not turn on her at the first mistake. At the first death that is out of her control. But that doesn't make her any less a medicine cat. Try as much as she wants, she cannot turn her back on these hare-brains who hurt themselves in the most convoluted of ways, eternally ruining something that a mere visit could have fixed in as long as they had been avoiding the damn visit in the first place.

The paw's injury was out of her control. It appeared to have been broken. A simple break. One that rest and a proper set would have healed in time. But there was nothing she could do now. In their refusal to visit the healers they had doomed themselves to live a life full of pain. Their twisted paw had healed wrong. Even as she peeled back the layers of bandaging that the feline had used in an obvious attempt to hide away the injury she could see it, and the sight did little to soothe her mood. She wanted to reprimand them. Demote them to kithood. It's what they deserved for their incompetence. If they wanted to act like an immature kit still dependent on their mother's milk, they should live like such as well. Would certainly keep them safe from any more blunders like these.

"You're a fool. I hope you realize that," the she-cat stated bluntly, eyes flashing dangerously as they turned from Poppysong's paw to their own gaze. "Gratefully for the clan, your bloody blunder only hurt the cat involved in it."

A sigh escaped Lightningstorm, equal parts irritation and disappointment. The one thing she trusted WindClan to do was to look out for themselves. The warriors of this star's forsaken clan had proved one thing to her time and time again. That they didn't care for anything as long as it didn't directly affect them. However, once their own interests were on the line? The lot of them were suddenly the most loyal, involved felines to have ever lived. The fact that Poppysong had not come around to have their paw checked out by Cowtuft gave her a few ideas of what could have possibly happened, but none painted the warrior in the best of lights.

Had they known about the poisoned herbs and not wanted to get poisoned themselves? If so, how dare they keep quiet about it... unless... they were the ones doing the poisoning. Knew what herbs would kill them. It was doubtful, considering the easiest solution would have then been to find fresh herbs, offer them to the medicine cat, and have those used on themselves. Which probably meant that they had simply been scared. Either by shyness, idiocy, or worry. None of which the spotted lass was particularly empathetic towards. Really... it all boiled down to a terrible mistake on their part. One that they would painfully carry for the rest of their lives.

"I can't help you. Not anymore. If you'd come when this bloody well happened, I could have fixed it. Left it good as new. I don't know what possessed you to keep this to yourself, love, but it's been too long. The bone's almost fully healed by this point. Had you kept quiet about this... helped somebody else hide this sort of injury, I'd be shredding your ears about now... Seems to me the paw's punishment enough, though, wouldn't you agree?" Lightningstorm mewed, her voice cool as she spoke. Her gaze softened mildly as she continued. "Hare-brain as you are, you're still my patient. I'm not enough of an arse to leave you like this... I'm not like your clanmates. How much pain are you in right now? Can you put your paw down at all?"

Poppysong can’t look up. They can feel the medicine cat’s eyes burning into them and they know if they return a look they won’t be able to take it. Her silence is deafening.

A fool. Poopysong supposes that is an accurate way to describe themself. A coward likely fits even better. They, too, are glad this didn’t hurt anyone else. At least- not telling others didn’t. Hawkfur did have a cough, and they’re not sure if they ever got it looked at…

Lightningstorm sighs, and Poppysong flinches back. Their form is suddenly larger thanks to their fur puffing up, which blocks a lot of the light coming into the den. Making the den smaller. This den has always felt small, like a cage or prison, and just as cold. Poppysong shivers. Maybe that’s just because it was at some point, at least for Poppysong’s mother. This was her prison. For so long, she was never was able to watch Poppysong become an a warrior. But at least they were well taken care of here. By… Cowtuft.

A rotting hole of guilt forms in their chest. Poppysong bites their tongue and can feel a prick of metallic blood drip down into their throat. The last time Poppysong saw Cowtuft was after that argument. ‘The argument I started,’ Poppysong thinks.

Poppysong’s inner monologue is broken by Lightningstorm speaking up. They can’t do anything. Poppysong was too late.

That hole in their chest grows to encapsulate their lungs, sucking the air out of them and stealing their ability to breathe. The pain from their leg. Will it stop them from protecting the camp? What if there’s danger? An attack? Poppysong would disappoint them all. And it would end in them all getting hurt.

No, no accomplices, why would they? This was a burden Poppysong was supposed to deal with alone. It was supposed to be a valiantly carried burden until it went away and it was all fine. At least, that’s what Poppysong told themself. It was, and is, a lie. This will be a punishment, no longer carried valiantly but with shame.

Poppysong wonders if they should have told Softsong how bad it truly got. Their mentor wouldn’t have been punished- right? Surely, Lightningstorm isn’t so cruel?

No. Lightningstorm reassures them they aren’t as uncaring as other clanmates. Without thought, Poppysong relaxes. ”Thank you…”

But Poppysong thinks on it for longer. No, not every clanmate is an arse. But Lightningstorm isn’t that far off, and it makes their fur itch.

How much pain. ”Oh, uhm…” Poppysong mumbles. They have gotten in the habit of putting as little pressure on it as possible, so they’re not quite sure.

Before their paw brushes against the den floor Poppysong winces as if in pain on instinct. The paw hovers there for a moment before thwy set it down. It’s less pain that they imagined, even as it throbs Poppysong imagines they could fight with it if they needed. The hole in their chest glimmers with hope-

”Not… that bad…” They begin, surprised.

Until they move their paw, that is. When the twist it to the side to adjust their balance, they have to bite their tongue not to hiss. ”It’s…” Poppysong pauses. No, they don’t want to lie. They’re too tired to lie. ”It’s fine to stand, not to twist it to the side like that.”

As Poppysong awaits an answer, they force themself to make eye contact with the medicine cat. Their own emerald eyes are dull and blurred from tears, so they don’t dare to blink.

It was admittedly rather pitiful. The way the tom simply went to sleep. The tears streaking his cheeks with blood. Even under her immense paranoia, her hatred of the warriors of WindClan... she still couldn't help but feel a small level of sympathy for the tom. Despite herself, she was only a feline. It was impossible for Lightningstorm to simply shut off all her core values... her moral compass and ignore those suffering with nothing more than an aloof, cold heart. Cowtuft had drilled a level of kindness in her that no cat should possess... She now saw it for the burden it was. She knew what he would say if he were here. That she'd had this kindness all along, but she preferred to blame him for it. It was easier that way. Gave her some anger to hold on to even as she tried her best to salvage Thriftfall's unsalvageable eyes.

With the tom asleep, however, it provided some respite. He wouldn't have to go through the shock of what had happened without some rest, and she could more properly work on his injuries. Having taken him underground to one of the private patient dens closest to her own, she approached once more with herbs in maw. Marigold, to stave off infection. Dandelion as a painkiller. He would need every bit he could get. And some moss to cover his injuries. Softer than cobwebs, and better to fully cover the extent of his wounds. She couldn't have him clawing his face off once he woke up if panic set in.

It had been easy enough to get the marigold. It had been amongst a batch of poppy seeds - eight to her count - and a couple catmint leaves. There was a single marigold left, as well... hardly enough if future problems arose. Lightningstorm would need to send patrols out soon and hope they could find herbs in this weather. A sigh escaped her as she cleaned her patient's wounds, the poultice made beside her already, her touch gentle despite the tom's consciousness being well away. It wouldn't take long to apply her medications.... her assessment fully made. His eyes were lost, unknown to anyone but her as she covered them in bandages of moss with care. She would have to keep an eye on him. Potentially dip into her poppy seed storages while his condition improved. Some cats got up and about like if nothing happened after things like these... but judging from what little she'd already seen, it would be a long adjustment period for Thriftfall from here.

@Spookez. [Thriftall]
| With this post, Thriftfall's initial healing is complete! Lightningstorm will probably be keeping him in her den under observation for at least a quarter moon while his injuries improve enough for him to go back to the warriors' den, but she will be going to Twilightstar with news of his blindness after this. There are warriors in the clan who are still warriors after having become permanently blind due to injuries, so she will not be recommending him be placed in the elders' den instantly, but if you prefer for the roleplay to continue with a time skip to explore her eventually referring him to the elders' den or straight up have him ask about the potential, let me know or just continue the roleplay with a timeskip here letting me know how much time has passed since. |

Eyes narrowed with suspicion as she watched her patient leave the den, the lithe calico's large ears perked up in surprise, another feline already waiting for her services. Outside of emergencies involving mouse-brained patrols or ambushes, there was rarely a moment in which the spotted lass had to see so many warriors one right after the other. This one wasn't as obviously injured as the first warrior... but she didn't like the look on his face. He seemed off. Not all there. In fact, he reminded her of her time spent observing Scalescar. Of the blank confusion he sported on his face whenever his memory was being particularly difficult that day. That alone was already a bad sign. Based on her education and experience, there was no helping memories lost. They simply came back of their own volition... or didn't. It varied from cat to cat.

"You alright there, Pumpkinspiral?" the medicine cat asked, her distrusting glare turning a bit softer as curiosity overtook her.

Lightningstorm's first instinct was to stand up and head his way, but she stood her ground, remaining where she sat instead. There were many a way an injured or confused cat could react, and in WindClan, even those who weren't confused or injured would just as gladly take a chunk out of their healers. The wiry framed she-cat was not about to take a risk on one who would actually have a valid reason to go for a killing blow against her if he had no idea who she was. Of course, it was all conjecture. She hadn't even spoken to the tom. But she liked to think that in her sixteen moons of life she had learned enough and excelled enough in her job to be able to make educated guesses at first sight. There had been a reason why she had called the tom by an incorrect name as it was. She would have her answers soon enough.

Narrowed eyes study the feline as they speak, long, thin tail tapping behind her. She honestly cannot begin to fathom what possessed the warrior to say nothing about this paw. From the intake of air, their automatic flinch before their paw had even touched the ground, their inability to so much as walk without wincing... it was all so hare-brained. Lightningstorm was having issues believing that no one else had noticed Poppysong's condition, not for the first few seconds of seeing the obvious pain they were in. The longer she was allowed to stew in her own thoughts, however, the more she remembered just how much WindClan cats didn't give a damn about anyone that didn't somehow benefit them directly. Still, this was a new low for the warriors of the clan, and the spotted lass had a good mind to storm into the warriors' den with her patient in tow as an example. Letting them know that it was that level of care and generosity that let arseholes poison the healer's herb supply while the healer took the blame for it and was offered up as the next prey to catch.

Yes, that would be a nice comeback. Look at you lot, high in your bloody perches built on the bones of every cat you've ever murdered when you can't even tell your clanmates can barely keep up with your worthless parades around camp. If it hadn't been for the fact that the medicine cat was certain the only one who would give a rat's arse about the whole production would be Poppysong themselves as they simmered in their own sense of shame she would have gone through with the bloody ordeal, but the truth was that no matter how much the lithe calico abhorred the clan she had once called her own, she could never bring herself to cause such misery to a patient. Much less one so obviously in pain. They'd suffered enough. Being made an example of wouldn't help them, and WindClan was beyond helping anyways.

"Stay here," she mewed, standing up as she went into the herb stores beneath.

Organizing through her herbs, the wiry framed she-cat noticed a few that were past their expiration date. Gratefully, even among those expired, she could salvage quite a fair bit. Among them were two sunfuzzies which would come in handy as the weather turned, a cobweb which she would have to reinforce with more later on... although gratefully the seven sheets of moss would handle anything dire while the cobwebs were gathered... Digging further in, she found a tansy - a flower she had gained a rather large distaste for through no fault of the herb itself - two marigolds... nope. None of these would work... Three dandelion... Three burnet... Aha! Two whole poppy flowers besides three borage leaves.

Wrinkling her nose with distaste, Lightningstorm remembered the severe lack of daisy in the territory ever since the herb shortage had begun. Hopefully, once leafbare was over... once newleaf begun... Maybe then they would find herbs again. If not, she would have to start taking towards the outskirts and twoleg gardens to replenish her supplies. Another sigh, this time exhausted, escaped her. She would admit to not relishing the thought. Disgruntled, the medicine cat grabbed a single poppy seed - no need for two this time around - and went back towards the entrance chamber were Poppysong awaited her. Approaching the orange and gray warrior, she dropped the poppy seed before her, circling around to sit down some distance away.

"I am not certain if the pain is fully caused by an improperly healed fracture alone - meaning there is precious little else I can offer - or if there is some swelling accounting for your condition. The paw's a proper mess though, innit? I'll see if I can find some daisy to make a poultice for the swelling. If it helps in any way... we'll take whatever small victories we can at this point. We'll have to wait until newleaf for that, though... potentially even greenleaf. Just... try and be careful on it. If it's ever too painful, come back and check with me. I'll try to give you a poppy seed so that existing itself isn't misery," the medicine cat mewed, her eyes dull as she spoke, making mental notes of future patrols to send as well as preparing herself for all the impending disappointment those would bring with them.

[+2 Goldenrod | +1 Cobwebs | +1 Tansy | +2 Marigold | +3 Dandelion | +3 Burnet | +20 Poppy Seeds | +3 Borage | +7 Moss]

@MangofDoom [Poppysong]
| Sorry for the sudden inventory checkup. Needed her to do a clean up, and seeing as how she was going down to the herb storage anyways, decided to clear it up here for efficiency's sake! Once Poppysong takes the poppy seeds, we can have the roleplay be finished, but feel free to have him stay and try and interact if you want - Lightningstorm will deflect, as this started back in her angrier days, but she'll keep it in mind for future interactions - or have him come back at some other point in time! Completely up to you. |
