ShadowClan/WindClan Surprise!

Darkfall - @Dark | Mistlewhisker - @Mica | Petalrot - @Neptune. | Moonmeadow - @Dolomedes

Dawnstar was tired and sore, between going on one patrol, training, and then throwing herself into another patrol, she went to nap in her den. However, after rolling around restlessly in her nest for several long minutes and with no sign of sleeping coming to her, the leader gave up. Physically, her body could do with some rest. The mink scratches and bites along her body were healing at a steady rate. Yet she could still feel them throbbing with mild discomfort, reminding her that another patrol had to go out.

Seeing as her mind refused to let her sleep, she might as well work herself into exhaustion instead. So with a mighty shake of her pelt, Dawnstar exited her den with a yowl.

"Mistlewhisker, Petalrot, Moonmeadow, Darkfall. With me, we're going to clear the minks out of our territory." The giant snarled without a care of what anyone was doing. She gave an order it was just best to follow it. Cimbing up the slope that led out of the ravine, Dawnstar silently made her way into the territory.

"I don't know how many if any of you have fought a mink before, but some reminders." Dawnstar meowed without looking over at any cat. She hadn't had much combat against minks herself, but she learned fast. "Minks are bigger than rabbits but smaller than average cats. They more aggressive than badgers, fast as a WindClanner, and can be as cunning as a fox. Their teeth are sharper than owl talons. Their dark pelts make them blend in with our territory far better than I would like."

Dawnstar pausing, taking a second to pull her front paw out of a extra muddy patch of earth. "They like to bite and latch on, like leeches. Getting them off can be painful if you're not careful. Mind your necks, they seem to enjoy going for the throat. Stay together, get too far apart and they might overwhelm you. Fall, and you'll be dead before you can blink." Dawnstar faintly wondered if she should have brought a bigger patrol now that she was going over all the problems one faced fighting minks.

The pack of minks she had seen last hadn't been that large, just to large for her and an inexperined apprentice to take care off. She hadn't left this alone for that long, it should be fine. The mighty feline shoved aside her concerns with a soft growl. Nose twitching, she stifled her gag reflex as a foul oder wafted towards her, faintly mixed with the heathery tang of WindClan.

The WindClan scent was normal, the border was nearby, but that stink... It was revolting. Trying not to breath too deeply, she veered slightly off course and led the patrol behind a dense wall of ferns, the leader let out an outrageous hiss as soon as her eyes located the pile of rotting prey, dead frogs, decaying birds, half eaten mice.

"What the hell is this?" The Shadow Queen was livid. No one wastes prey in ShadowClan.

Before she could go on her little rage rant, her tattered ears swerved to the right, thick muscles tensing as a thunderous warning snarl bounced around the small clearing. It did little to deter the chitter cries from a threat she had yet to see. Her amber eye swept the area, until she located a large hole near the roots of a pine tree. She counted one, two heartbeats before the minks poured out of the hole in an unending stream.

Petalrot
~<>~
28 moons || bug/bug’s || ShadowClan Warrior
slim tortoiseshell w/ white tuxedo markings; green eyes

The day was going well enough, Petalrot had just finished bug's meal and was settling in to groom bug's pelt a bit when a call of bug's name caused bug to snap to attention. Petalrot and three others were called to deal with the minks and that was... scary. Bug had seen the damage the minks had done to bug's leader - in fact, the evidence of the attack still decorated her pelt, and Petalrot privately thinks she might be just a little crazy to go after them again so soon. Nevertheless, bug answers the summons and follows after her.

Quietly, the tortoiseshell listens as bug's leader describes just how vicious these minks are. The main thing bug takes away from the warnings is to watch bug's neck and stick close to the rest of the patrol. The fact the minks are smart enough to know how to pick cats off by luring them away from their group was enough to send a shiver down bug's spine. Who would've thought a creature smaller than them could be so violent? Petalrot files the information away for the moment, still sort of marveling that someone as uninvolved as bugself would even be called to help with a mission as important as minks.

Nearing the WindClan border, Petalrot wrinkles bug's nose, uncomfortable with the strong heather that wafted in the air. Surely just because the two clans had an alliance that didn't mean the rabbits were bold enough to actually cross the border? The moorland cats surely weren't that arrogant, were they? Petalrot certainly hoped not - border crossing was one way to end an alliance real fast. But the heady scent was nothing compared to the half eaten prey that the group of five discovered.

"That carrion better not have WindClan scent on it," bug muttered under bug's breath, not all that quiet and not really speaking to anyone in particular but noting the fury rising in bug's leader. Before bug could bend down to inspect it and make sure it wasn't ShadowClan or WindClan scent on it, the sudden chitter and pounding of tiny feet on the forest floor snapped the tom's attention away just in time to see the minks pour out in droves. Petalrot thought there would only be a few of them! This certainly looked like more than a few!

Petalrot lets out a snarl, body crouched low in a defensive stance as the creatures emerge, and accidentally locks eyes with one a good sight smaller than the others. An adolescent? A juvenile? It didn't matter, because the thing is streaking in bug's direction and it's all Petalrot can do to hold bug's ground. There's too many minks - the five of them cannot possibly take them all on their own, regardless of how strong Dawnstar is or the fact that there's two enforcers in this group.

Mistlewhisker
ShadowClan Enforcer
she/her | 38 moons
[Large black cat with a half white muzzle and pale green eye (left gouged out)]

[Dawnstar - @Undertaker ] [Petalrot - @Neptune. ] [Moonmeadow - @Dolomedes ] [Darkfall - @Dark ]
· · ────────────── · ·
Mistlewhisker flicked an ear when she heard her name being called, eye glittering with curiosity. Clearing out the minks, hm? This could get deadly. The molly stretched the stiffness from her limbs settled in there by the chill of leafbare and followed the patrol into the territory. It was about time she brushed up on her battle skills in a setting that wasn't an assessment or a spar. The large molly walked beside Darkfall, her fellow enforcer now a good friend. The rest of the patrol was made up of cats she had only seen briefly, and while Moonmeadow's timeliness on patrols had pleased her, she had yet to see her battle prowess. Mistlewhisker certainly hoped both she and Petalrot did not disappoint. She didn't know much about the latter, though bug's wariness was clear as they approached the border.

Dawnstar's explanation of minks had the large warrior narrowing her eye in thought. Minks sounded like they could quickly become a problem worse than lynxes or badgers, if they were as vicious as the leader explained. Pack predators were very difficult to deal with, let alone ones who could multiply like rabbits. Mistlewhisker eyed the patrol, wondering if they should have brought more cats.

The scent was what she noticed at first. The heathery tang of WindClan had been nearly wiped away by the sickeningly sweet scent of rot and decay, the distant buzz of flies reaching her torn ears. The enforcer wrinkled her nose with a low growl. Either there was a body they hadn't discovered yet, or someone had been leaving prey out as carrion food. She hadn't though of WindClan as stupid enough to leave prey out, especially during leaf bare, and she certainly did not expect that behavior from ShadowClan.

As it turns out, neither clan was responsible for the pile of mangled, half-eaten prey corpses. There was a low chorus of chittering and scrabbling that permeated the thick silence, echoing around them. Mistlewhisker's ears pinned back, muscles rippling along her shoulders as she primed herself for an attack. She hardly had any time to realize just how in trouble they were before the creatures streamed from a hole in the roots of a pine tree, flooding the air around them like a disgusting, writhing ocean of dark fur.

Mistlewhisker heard yowls of surprise from her patrol mates, and the enforcer quickly whirled to focus her good eye on Petalrot. She took one step towards the warrior before a mink near her size--which was pretty damn big--barreled into her with a shrill shriek, tiny claws sharper than a kit's tearing into her flank. Mistlewhisker howled in rage, twisting to snap her teeth at the mink's throat. It was too quick, jerking away and writhing like a snake before launching at her neck, barely missing as Mistlewhisker rolled away, keeping low to the ground so it couldn't attack her stomach. Another mink flew over her back, catching her ear in its claws before it disappeared into the writhing mass. This was bad. Mistlewhisker snarled at the mink who had its beady little eyes locked on hers, leaping forward and trapping the mink in a death grip, the two tumbling away in a flurry of claws and teeth.

Moonmeadow
| She/they | ShC warrior | Moons: 21 | Purrks: Shadow Fiend |

Moonmeadow looked up from where they were walking to the apprentices' den, rounded ears flicking in the direction of Dawnstar's call before her eyes followed. She quickly made her way over as the words fully processed in their head and they found themself torn about the information. This was a capable group, having two enforcers, a leader, and a cat who Moonmeadow assumes is a competent warrior given Dawnstar calling on bug. That and Moonmeadow has been worried sick about those dreadful creatures...it felt like they should bring more cats, wounds were still apparent along the the Shadow Queen's pelt but Moonmeadow dipped her head and kept this concern to herself. She would take care to be more on the defensive, she was always more of a protector, to watch her fellow clan members' backs while throwing out attacks whenever they could.

The called upon cats quickly gathered and with swiftness the patrol was setting out almost as soon as Dawnstar's words could fully settle into the air. The leader's following ones were...startling. Moonmeadow had never really encountered a mink before, though the feline had experience with other creatures and cats. They sounded like a horrid thing to deal with but Moonmeadow liked that they were taking them out before they could spread and do some real damage. The warnings stuck to her mind, their normally cheery mood being replaced with more stoic seriousness that was necessary for a mission like this. Somewhere in them, they just knew that things were going to get messy quick.

And it did...starting off with a literal meaning of the word as a rancid scent drifted through the air as Moonmeadow carried themself on giant, dark paws. It was bad enough to make their nose sting and their eyes nearly water and the odd way it mixed and mangled with the scent of heather from the Windclan border did not help matters. It was undoubtedly the scent of rotting prey, a suspicion that is confirmed as they entered into a nearby clearing that contained a mound of disgusting half-eaten and old prey in it. The warrior almost reared back as the scent hit their sensitive nose full force but forced herself to stand still, sickly eyes flashing across the clearing to find some sort of clue of just what had left that prey there. Whatever it was it wasn't any cat of any sort, no cat, even a kit just born would do such a thing.

The sound of chittering screeches told the warrior of the creatures' presence before sight did and Moonmeadow whipped their gaze to the offending noise just as countless minks of a variety of sizes came like a wave towards them. A dangerous growl left Moonmeadow's throat as they crouched down keeping their eyes locked on one of the slithery land-eels that were fast approaching her. At the same time, they could hear the panic yowls of her clan mates, likely coming to the same conclusion that she was reaching. This was much more than what Dawnstar described. They needed to stay close and Moonmeadow needed to- Needed to dodge!

One of the creatures lunged at her as more followed and the feline felt their paws hit against the floor heavily as the dodged the incoming beast, the creature's snapping jaws, while smaller, spoke of great dangers flying past her chest. With no time to rest or even think, another was at her legs, digging claws into her flank. The feline made quick work of grabbing the smaller creature and ripped it free from its grasp on her before it just as quickly squirmed out of her grasp and bounced back at her. They should've brought along more cats, was Moonmeadow's last coherent thought before she focused on taking out as many as they could. They seemed to be multiplying right before their eyes.

___________

Looking up from his post at the front of the camp, Darkfall nodded silently to Dawnstar as she called him along with a few others. Truthfully, he was a bit glad to know that Dawnstar trusted hm enough to have him tag along with the group, and was looking forward to chasing off the minks. Of oourse, he hadn’t the slightest clue what a mink actually looked like, and was glad that his leader offered some sort of explanation as they walked. The way that Dawnstar described them was a bit unnerving, it also explained why she had gotten so roughed up during the last encounter she had with the vermin.

It appeared that they were approaching the WindClan border. The massive tom wasn’t too fond of this one, as there seemed to be an abundance of mud no matter the season. Gross stuff, mud that is. It just seemed to always get stuck in the fur between his toes and it was absolutely disgusting to deal with later on. He wasn’t one to claim Vulturefang as his father in most cases, however, after finding out about their relationship, he was quick to blame the older tom for the stars-damned big and fluffy paws that he inherited. Stupid, useless father…

He was quickly dragged out of his thoughts, however, when he too picked up on the growing scent of rot. He had noticed it as the got closer to the heathery border, however, it seemed that as the further they got, the worse and more overwhelming the stench grew. Wrinkling his nose in disgust, he cast a glance towards the other enforcer he had been walking alongside. The scent of WindClan was almost non existent now, and the already diluted ShadowClan scent seemed to be buried depe within he recesses of decay as well. This was something that neither clan did.

Blue eyes narrowed as he realized what this meant. Of course, it was then that the perpetrators began to make themselves known. It was a lot of noise. The sound of muffled chittering and scrabbling had his fur on end and his head instantly snapped forward. A low growl emanated from within him but was cut short when he truly saw the depth of what they were up against.

They came in droves. Honestly, he had been expecting maybe a small battle patrol’s worth of minks, but oh no, there they were pouring out of that hellish pit in a sea of black and brown. ”Stars help us–” He managed before they were quickly overrun by the vicious creatures.

Darkfall had several thoughts as he faced the sea of creatures. One of them was how completely and utterly hopeless the situation was, and another still was to stay near everyone else. Out of one corner of his eye he was able to see that Mistlewhisker who had just been next to him was bowled over by one of the little biters. Petalrot was dealing with one of bug’s own. He couldn’t quite make out Dawnstar in all of the commotion, however, he noticed that Moonmeadow appeared to be having a struggle. Crap crap crap, things were moving far too fast!

Grabbing one of the creatures in his jaws, he managed to toss it to the side in an effort to make it to the other warrior, however, his movements were inhibited by the writhing mass of creatures. He felt bites at his legs, his flanks, scrabbling at his neck and face, but he continued to swat at what he could while he pushed through. It was a struggle, keeping low to the ground to avoid getting his belly ripped apart, while trying to help his clanmate as well. It didn’t help that he couldn’t put any real power behind his blows do to the space being filled with the creatures who conveniently liked to stay just out of reach. He could feel an unmistakable anger that he thought had lon since died bubbling wihtin him. ”Damn it all to hell!” Darkfall snarled. He didn’t know if he’d make it to her in time, he was a bit preoccupied himself as an angry yowl escaped him. One of those blasted catwannabes bit into the back of his leg, and yanked, causing him to lose his balance and temporarily tumble to the ground.

Damn. Darkfall was starting to question why Dawnstar hadn’t brought more warriors. Surely if she had known about the scale they were dealing with, she wouldn’t have brought them out here to die. Right?

Darkfall - @Dark | Mistlewhisker - @Mica | Petalrot - @Neptune. | Moonmeadow - @Dolomedes
She should have brought more warriors. Lesson learned. Dawnstar hadn't thought the minks would have multiplied so quickly no taken up more territory so fast. She wasn't as familiar with minks as she would have liked. Dawnstar cursed and spat as her claws raked across one of the mink's faces, she crushed another under her paw, breaking small bones, like she would a bug. Her amber eyes darted to and fro ensuring her clanmates were still on their paws.

She briefly made out Mistlewhisker, alive and fighting, before a mink came at her, rearing up on its hind legs and attacking Dawnstar's face. She managed to avoid damage to her eyes, but one of her ears took the brunt of the attack as small claws cut through like paper. She caught the mink by its neck with her fangs snapped its throat, and tossed it to the ground in time to whip around and face off with another mink.

She found Darkfall making his way towards Moonmeadow, or he would have if he hadn't lost his balance. So much for her warning. She couldn't even be pissed with him over this! Dawnstar raised a forepaw, fueled by her usual rage, her claws ripped through the soft underbelly of one of the minks coming at her face again. Pain exploded in her hind leg, but she ignored that in favor of moving closer to Darkfall.

She was not keen on losing any of her warriors and especially her enforcers, even one as troublesome as Darkfall. "Petalrot, stick with Mistlewhisker." Dawnstar yowled out as she saw bug squaring off with a younger mink. It was one less thing for her to worry about if those two knew to stay close to each other. She darted towards Darkfall, although, was briefly sidetracked.

The Queen of Shadow let out a loud caterwaul as a mink sprang and twisted in the air, landed heavily on her back, and began to drag its claws between her shoulder blades. She twisted around barely able to catch the mink by its tail and dragged it off her back. Unfortunately, she left one side completely exposed, she felt fangs digging into the healing wound on her neck. She had to take a moment to rip that one off her neck, and then there were the ones on her legs. How the hell did she get them out of here?!

Leechscar felt this uncomfortable tingle crawl up his spine as led his patrol out of the prairie to the moorlands, through the Skyglade, and towards the Whispering Wetlands. The WindClan warrior had long ago gotten over the blood trauma associated with this border, but sometimes it still had his nerves standing on edge. It most likely had to do with how dark and murky the opposing territory was. Leechscar always felt like he had great eyesight for a WindClan warrior, able to spot rabbits and birds fox-lengths away, but when it came to ShadowClan's territory he could barely make out the trees' tail lengths away.

He'd never understand how ShadowClan could live in such a depressing territory. Leechscar kept his patrol several tail lengths from the border, worried about an ambush. He didn't care how much they preached allies, Leechscar would never fully trust the toads. He didn't dare sit, the swamp lands made the moorland wetter than he'd like. He figured his unease could also be the nasty stink in the air. He wasn't familar with the smell, but considering that minks had been scent in the area, he supposed that was the stink. It smelled slightly worse than ShadowClan gross odor.

He looked over to the other three, Batglare, Bravebird, and Dapplebreeze, parting his maw to see if they had any idea how long they should wait here. Before a word left his muzzle, he heard a loud yowl followed by shrill hisses and caterwauls. Leechscar's hackles rose in surprise as soon as he heard the noise. His muscles tensed and his head swerved ready for a fight. It took him a moment to notice that the cries were coming across the border not on WindClan's side.

The large warrior remained on guard while he glared into the dense shadows trying to make out the sound. "We should ignore that, right?" He asked the older warriors, looking for advice. "Twilightstar said we should not go over the border." It sounded like whoever was in some trouble. Leechscar shifted the weight between his forepaw and scowled. Leechscar didn't care about some toad lives, but Twilightstar was set on their alliance so does that mean they should help or not?

Dapplebreeze wasn't certain what she had expected from their approach of the swampy border. Nothing good, in truth. Despite their alliance, the spotted molly's thoughts on the dark clan were as far from the light as they. So much strife had come from them for so long... the death of her own son had cemented an eternal resentment of the clan as a whole. Gratefully for the former queen, age had taught her that diplomacy was most important in situations like these. It wasn't about what she wanted... about how she wished to see the blood of these vermin run free. It was about what was good for the clan, and as of right now, Twilightstar was right. They could use the violent shadow dwellers in handling their predicament.

And yet the sounds she heard here now had her on edge. It was as if an explosion of chaos had somehow ruptured through the bog and echoed all the way to the open moors. Mismatched ears erect, eyes momentarily wide in surprise, she only turned her attention from the cacophonous brawl - for the sounds could truly be nothing less - at the sound of Leechscar's voice, concern forcing a twitch of her whiskers. The leader's son was of course correct. Twilightstar's orders had been explicit. They were to not cross the border. And frankly, the death of any cats across would be no loss to anyone as far as she was concerned... and yet this was an unforeseen situation they were now in... one that discomforted her as it argued against her natural instinct to obey the leader's command.

"The correct thing would be to follow command, yes. Twilightstar's instructions are clear. However... I do not know if it would bode to our best interests to allow our... allies," Dapplebreeze stated, the word uttered delicately, "to handle whatever ill befalls them without lifting a claw. It could later on be argued that they have no reason to come to our aid when we refused to do as much for them. Of course... this is ShadowClan. We might very well be asking to be attacked for stepping foot in their marshes, no matter how well intentioned the act might be."

Falling silent, the senior warrior turned a steady look upon the younger, larger feline, blue hues alert. She would not take control of the situation here. It was not her patrol, and she trusted Leechscar's judgement on the situation. Twilightstar had chosen him for a reason, after all, and much like herself, she was certain the leader saw the value in the warrior beyond the familial bond they shared. What she could do, however, was provide an assessment of the situation that gave both the pros and cons to each action. The understanding that regardless of a border cross or not, the alliance could suffer from their meddling or lack thereof. Regardless the choice, she would make sure to follow command.

Default Re: Surprise!

Bravebird - WindClan Warrior
She/her | 45 moons | Beefed Up T3, One with the Warren
Always on high alert when out on the territory, Bravebird had her ears perked and eyes alert - even more so than normal. She didn't fancy another run in with those territorial furry rats, a phantom ache drifting in the spots of her recent injuries before fading away. She was grateful to not have lost sight in her eye, and though she prided herself on her skill set as a formidable fighter, those minks were quick and as angry as a fox in a fit. Thankfully the Sky Glade didn't sprout any of them up, and soon enough the patrol was headed towards the ShadowClan border.

The fur along her spine lifted at the sudden yowls splitting the air, gaze going first to Leechscar, then to her mother. Brave was inclined to agree with the tom, not really wanting to help ShadowClan in the slightest. She didn't agree at all with the alliance, and the only reason she hadn't put up more of a fuss about it is because of her immense respect for Twilightstar. "If they attack us for helping, then maybe we can use that to break off this mouse-brained alliance," came the snort from Brave as she swung her head in the direction of the yowls. Stars, she hoped they were feeling some pain right about now, they definitely deserved it.

But there was a look of understanding in her eyes as she rested them onto the patrol's leader once more. As much as she wanted to turn around and go home, Bravebird didn't want her Clan to be known as cats who went back on their word - and Twilightstar had given just that to Dawnstar when the alliance had been made. "...I don't like this alliance any more than it seems you all do, but..." She let her words trail off, knowing the decision truly lay with Leechscar.

Petalrot
~<>~
29 moons || bug/bug’s || ShadowClan Warrior
slim tortoiseshell w/ white tuxedo markings; green eyes

Tiny teeth sink into bug's front leg as white mitted paws slam down on the hissing and snarling creature. With a hiss of bug's own, Petalrot drops bug's head, teeth sinking into brown fur and yanking the vermin free... taking a small chunk of bug's leg with it. Efficiently, bug gives the mink in bug's maw a good shake, disorienting it, and flings it into the nearest pine, where it slams its head. Bug doesn't check if it stays down - too busy concentrating on staying where the rest of the patrol is and trying not to get horribly separated.

"Damn, pack hunters," Petalrot is muttering under bug's breath just as Dawnstar yells for bug to stick close to Mistlewhisker, who was having her own problems with one of the larger minks. "On it!" Petalrot calls in the affirmative, streaking over to where the enforcer is brawling with the large mink. There's not much Petal can do to assist with that fight, but bug can cover her flank and make sure others don't take the opportunity to sink their needle sharp teeth and claws into her.

Racing toward the enforcer, Petalrot locked bug's eyes onto two minks racing toward the occupied enforcer. Yeah... ok, bug could handle two minks at once, sure... no problem at all..! Lunging for the first of the two, Petalrot slams a paw onto its back, overbalancing it snd sending it skidding sideways while bug takes another leap forward to connect teeth with the back leg of the second, halting its movement. Unfortunately... all bug managed to do was make the things mad at bug, because the one bug tossed away first is shoving claws and teeth into Petalrot's flank.

Hissing, around the mink in bug's mouth, Petal sinks bug's teeth in further until all bug can taste is the tang of blood, a claw raking down the creature's side for good measure while bug kicks out with bug's back legs to try and dislodge the uninvited guest, dropping into a brief roll to attempt to dislodge it.

Batglare trailed further at the back of the patrol. If he was not leading, he was always more comfortable taking the rear. For once, Batglare wasn't looking forward to fighting. If they were lucky, they could chat and leave with no claws being drawn. It wasn't that long ago he had visited Lightingstorm. He truly didn't feel like visiting her again so soon.

Alas, the yowls and shouts on the other side of the border had the older warrior giving up any hopes of not being involved in a fight. His stoic gaze sought out Leechscar's as the tom looked as startled and troubled as the rest of them. Dapplebreeze offered the younger patrol leader some sage advice, and Bravebird a light quip that Batglare hoped Leechscar didn't take seriously.

"Following Twilightstar's orders should be the priority, however, in this situation, I'd think she'd be willing to be flexible. Do as you please, we'll follow you." It was a tough situation to be in, but it was Leechscar's choice.
