The abandoned cave(p)

A small cave abandoned by its previous owner echoes with the wails and pitiful cries of a kit. A kit in the curled crook of a dead she-cat that no longer provides heat for the tiny being.

Vennie had requested he go hunting. Sure, he was exhausted from a night of stargazing with her, but she'd always insisted that a proper tom would take care of his mate no matter the cost. Right now the cost was sleep, so it wasn't surprising that he was slow to respond when the echoing cries of a kit from a nearby cavern pierced his ears. Eventually, though, his lagging brain caught up and he scurried over to the mouth of the cave, cautiously peering in.

"Oh dear," was all he said when he beheld the strange sight: a dead she-cat curled around what looked like a kit who had only recently been introduced to the very loud, bright, overstimulating world. "Oh dear," he said again, creeping into the cave. As he approached the kit, his thoughts started to spiral. Was the dead cat its mother? How long has it been here? Does it have any other relatives? But the loudest was, What would Ven think about me bringing home this kit? Of course, she'd always wanted children of her own, but this kit... well, it wasn't her own. Prince hesitated, eyeing the crying kit.

The kit mewled and mewled looking for warmth. It's eyes shut tight and it's ears flattened. It heard the pattering of paws and mewled trying to find whoever was nearby. It tried to find the warmth.

His heart melted. Whether Vennie liked it or not, he was taking this kit home. Prince stepped closer, lowering himself in an attempt to seem smaller. "Hey, kiddo," he whispered gently as he crouched by the corpse that cradled the kit. It was rather smelly, as you'd expect from a corpse, but he ignored it for the sake of the child.

* The kit mewled at the voice and tried to crawl over to it. The tiny thing could barely move as it was only a couple days old. *

As carefully as he could, Prince took the kitten by the scruff and took it back to his and Vennie's den.

The kit mewled when it was picked up and flailed its legs. It didn't understand anything at all.
