(Featherpaw assessment thread)


Hawkbite's reassuring words got to Featherpaw, he would admit. An enforcer candidate? Me? That's certainly a goal to try and achieve. Featherpaw liked Hawkbite, Hawkbite didn't ditch him like the others had. That's why the young cat only trusted Hawkbite with his assessment. So he bided his time, waiting for the enforcer commander to be available. "Excuse me, Hawkbite, sir?" he asked him, "Can... can you assess me... please?"

The Commander turned his attention to Featherpaw. An apprentice he'd personally trained and one he'd taken note of as pushing their experience to the best of his abilities. The question piqued his interest and he had to think for a moment. He did have the time right now to run an assessment.

"Alright, then. Let's get this assessment going, shall we?" Hawkbite suggested, gesturing for the apprentice to follow him out to the territory. This would be his second assessment ran, the first was a failure, and he prayed this one would go smoother.

Featherpaw eagerly followed Hawkbite, bristling with enthusiasm. He took a deep breath, calming himself down to prevent himself from doing anything reckless. "So which part of the assessment will I be doing first?" he asked once he got himself in order. "I promise I won't disappoint you, sir... You're someone I really look up to, since you stuck around when the others abandoned me. I will not fail you, sir!" He readied himself, his claws itching to dig into something.

The Commander led them to a small clearing and turned to face him. His eyes studied the apprentice for a moment, their words would find way to his ears and he'd feel his fur prickle. He wasn't sure if that was a good thing or if he should be mad for the apprentice. Either way, Hawkbite would let out a small grunt.

"I appreciate your words, but we'll see what you can prove today. It's quite a simple task. Defeat me in combat and you'll pass your assessment," Hawkbite replied, swishing his tail behind him. "Treat it like a proper battle. Use your claws. Nothing is off the table."

"Questions?" Hawkbite was quick to the point.

Featherpaw stared at Hawkbite with uncertainty. I can use my claws? I don't want to hurt you. But it is what I must do, so I have no choice. Uncertainty like this would get Featherpaw killed. "By defeating you in combat, what do you mean? What is it that I have to do specifically? I don't want to get anything wrong."

His tail swished a little rougher behind him, slight annoyance at this order being questioned. Otherwise, Hawkbite seemed find outwardly. "Every apprentice must pass a sparring assessment. Sure, we can test your other skills, but your pass is to win in a spar, or at least prove you're competent enough to escape if you can't win," he replied.

Hawkbite waved his tail as he rose back to his paws, taking a few paces backwards away from Featherpaw. This would be his starting point. "Any further questions?" Hawkbite would give the apprentice one last moment to speak before he'd crouch down into a battle crouch and wait for Featherpaw to be ready.

Featherpaw shook his head. "No, sir. I have no other questions." He adjusted himself, and waited for the perfect moment to strike. The apprentice pounced at Hawkbite with his claws unsheathed. Anything goes, remember?

He sure hoped Featherpaw didn't expect him to go easy. It was an assessment after all. It was time to push Featherpaw to his limits. Hawkbite's eyes narrowed on him as he sprang into action. He noted the outstretched claws and a smirk crossed his lips.

Good.

Hawkbite darted forward, aiming to dive under the apprentice so he hit the ground and not him. Assuming this quick movement was successful, Hawkbite would turn around and dash towards Featherpaw in a counterattack. His front legs were outstretched, ready to tackle Featherpaw to the ground.

Featherpaw attempted to grab Hawkbite, only to miss him entirely. He growled in annoyance, and moved out of the way of Hawkbite's attack, using this opportunity to try and claw his shoulder.

The Commander was pleasantly surprised by the speed Featherpaw displayed in the dodge. When he finished the move, empty pawed, he winced a little at the stinging sensation on his shoulder. Featherpaw had landed their attack. He spun quickly to face Featherpaw once more, tail lashing, although his eyes were bright with approval.

His green eyes momentarily locked on to the apprentice's flank before meeting his gaze again. Hawkbite wasted no time. He darted forward again, running at Featherpaw head on before dodging to the left at the last second and aiming to rake his claws down his flank.

Regardless of if the hit landed or not, Hawkbite would turn again and run at Featherpaw, leaping into the air and hoping he'd land on top of the apprentice. It gave Featherpaw little to no time to recover and process, a test on the apprentice's reflexes. This would be his first attempt at trying to pin Featherpaw down.
