Exhaustion. That was all Lightningstorm could feel these past few days. Between the death of one of the furies, the upkeep to make sure those closest to her didn't collapse mentally, and just... the general attempts WindClanners as a whole seemed to relish in when it came to trying to make their lives as unsafe as possible had the medicine cat stretched to her limit. On one paw, she believed this was a sign that she had made the right call. That she was ready for an apprentice. That WindClan might just need two bloody medics just to keep running. On the other paw... she had been so busy she hadn't had a moment to properly teach her apprentice a damn thing, and that was just a real shame, wasn't it? She had been looking forward to teaching. To sharing her knowledge. To having someone else to gush about herbs to. All she'd gotten so far was headaches, vague memories flashing aggressively and confusingly before her, and a lack of sleep. Rest could wait until later though. She had more pressing matters to tend to now.

"Ears?" the calico called out as she entered their den, wondering if the paw had started making himself at home in their underground domain already.

@Oliver [Rabbitpaw]
| So, because the Bravebird death roleplay started a while back before Lightningstorm asked Rabbitpaw to be her apprentice but it hasn't ended yet and canonically didn't occur until after he was officially announced as the new medicine cat apprentice, I am trying to sort of retcon a bit of a timeline here so there's an explanation as to why Rabbitpaw wasn't even given the choice to try and help - Lightningstorm would have taken the help as it was an incurable disease and any ideas would have been welcomed while she was in the testing stages - in that Bravebird started getting ill well before Rabbitpaw was made a medic, therefore Lightningstorm had already noticed that it was a lost cause and she didn't want Rabbitpaw's first patient to be an inevitable death. Sorry for the confusion there. |

Rabbitpaw
Rabbitpaw poked a paw into the little stream that ran through the medicine den. His den. Miss Lightningstorm’s den. He wasn’t sure about what to call it, if he had any right to refer to it in any manner that implied it was his own but also… he was the medicine cat apprentice now… which was also incredibly weird to think. He had always thought he would be a warrior, and then a tunneler, and now he was here. A medicine cat apprentice. Though not much in terms of training has happened, not that he blames Miss Lightningstorm in any way! Of course not, It’s been busy and he wasn’t trained enough to help which sort of made him feel bad! He was her apprentice, his whole job was to help… but he couldn’t. Not yet! Right, yet! He would soon-

His tattered ear flicked as he heard the nickname that Miss Lightningstorm had recently assigned to him, and he quickly sat up from looking into the stream and turned to see his… mentor. “Miss Lightningstorm! How are you?” He got to his paws and walked over to the older feline. Would they begin his training? What would he be learning first? The idea of herbs and medicine has always been interesting to him but he has never really learned anything before besides what Miss Lightningstorm had told him about celandine and then the bit about burnet.

The sight of her apprentice coaxing a wide grin on the molly's face, she gave Rabbitpaw a loud purr in greeting, closing her eyes contentedly for a moment before sitting down. He looked better, despite the fact that he had been hiding himself since the... Well, she supposed anyone would. She couldn't remember having a bond that strong with anyone, but she was certain that if she had lost a loved one, it would have affected her. Without a shadow of a doubt.

"Doing quite well, thanks love. Bit tired, but that's just clan life, innit? If you ain't tired that might just be a sign you're leaning to the kittypet life," she joked, lightening the mood.

It was a reflex. After Bravebird's death she'd had to keep her spirits higher. Twilightstar, Hawkfur, Crowtooth and Dapplebreeze had all suffered a tremendous loss. Firestorm, the pretty ginger tabby that had begun visiting her every now and then - with the amount of kits that she was suddenly caring for, she was honestly surprise the she-cat had any time for her at all - had also felt that loss, apparently having seen the lilac point as a mother. In all earnest, this constant upbeat demeanor was part of her exhaustion, along with the string of patients she'd had to tend to over the days she'd been trying to find a cure for the doomed fury. Which of course meant she was even more invested than ever in training the younger tom. Having another pair of eyes to help take care of these cats who seemed to have their heads stuck up their arses half the time would be a blessing for her... although it might just be the beginnings of headaches for the lad. Hmmm... perhaps teaching him about feverfew would be a top priority then, just in case.

"Not tired enough for that lovely smile of yours though, eh, Ears? Now, what say you we get to learning? Can't be having this fancy new den just for the pleasant scents, right?" Lightningstorm chirped, her mood more openly cheerful at the thought of sharing knowledge. One of her favorite pastimes for certain!

"So far, you've learned celandine, haven't you? Back during that last outing we had? The one I asked you to be my apprentice? Tell me, love. You remember what I said back then?"

A small, impromptu test. An assessment of sorts. From what Lightningstorm had seen, Rabbitpaw had excellent muscle memory. He was a brilliant tunneling apprentice. She'd no doubt his fighting and hunting was up to par as well. Now she just needed to see how his powers of recollection were. True, it had been some time since that talk, but medicine cats needed to remember many a herb, and they had to recollect this knowledge in the blink of an eye, no matter how long it had been since they had last used said herb on a patient. This was something that could be practiced, of course. But it would be best to know just how much practice it would take - if any - for him to begin getting the grasp of swift herb recollection before she begun filling his head with even more medicinal know how. Like say... the type she was planning on teaching him today!

| Sorry for the delay on the delay here! I kept peeps updated on Discord, but posting on the site on mobile is so hard I was focusing on the few responses I could sneak out! Had a blackout that lasted three days followed by an extra one without internet - phone has separate internet, thankfully... but I am not made for mobile posting apparently - and my entire schedule went haywire again. Storm season really not being kind this year. Over September already.

Regardless of what Rabbitpaw responds here, by the way, Lightningstorm will be bringing up the basics next - marigold and the difference between cobwebs and moss - and finish the lesson here with a mention on burnet. Past that point, I will have Lightningstorm call on Rabbitpaw to join her in healing roleplays so he can either learn herbs on the job or have her mention lesser used herbs here in mini "scenes" where she sits down with him to explain a few extra herbs that he could learn for specific uses. |

Rabbitpaw
Rabbitpaw was already feeling much better, if there was just one thing that Rabbitpaw was actually good at no matter what it was learning and listening when it comes to training. Though since that patrol so much has happened and he wasn’t actually sure if he could completely recall everything Miss Lightningstorm told him about celandine, he would, of course, tell her what he did remember. He looked to the side I’m thought, his tattered ear flicking before he started to speak slowly, as if thinking through his words individually as he said each one.

It’s pretty specific to eyes right? White flowers?” That sounds right, because he had been wondering how someone had originally figured out the use of the herb if it only helped with eyes. It wasn’t like he was in the habit of throwing random flowers, be it just the juice or nectar stuff or not, into his eyes to see what happens. Maybe he would try other things down the line in the attempt to learn and discover but he would like to keep his eyes secure for a few moon more before messing around with them. “I imagine that if they do heal eyes then it’s probably for things like irritation or maybe even infections? I don’t know many other issues you can have for your eyes that you can heal… if that makes sense? Like if you cut them up- oh wait!!

His mind went to the encounter he had with Tallgrass, and how his eyes had gotten messed up after the vulture had stabbed at them with its beak. Had Miss Lightningstorm used white flowers after that? “Just kidding I can’t remember what you used for Tallgrass’s eye that one time.

Lightningstorm purred, amusement lighting up her eyes. Sure, he needed a bit of a refresher, but to be honest, she didn't blame him. She'd sprung up that question on him soon after the fact, hadn't she? And then with everything that had happened, it wasn't surprising in the slightest that the exactitudes surrounding celandine hadn't really stuck to his mind. He hadn't expected to need the information. And it was so niche, too. Not something the average warrior needed to be bothered with in the slightest.

"Yellow flowers, as a matter of fact. Usually having four petals, although I have seen some with one or two more. Here," she mewed, grabbing a small, dried flower from a bundle she'd brought along with her.

"This one right here is celandine. A bit drier than I like, but if soaked for a little while it tends to perk up just enough to be usable. You see, most of the herbs I will teach you are used in the forms of poultices or you down right get 'em straight down your gullet. Patients tend to be less than fond of the latter. Celandine is a bit of an odd one, though. You see, it is neither poultice nor eaten. You must - with care - press on the flower until the juices from the petals drip down into the patient's eye. You don't want to overdo it, so a singular flower is always good for both eyes.

Surprisingly, despite being a yellow flower, it does not have any properties that seem to help with infection. When treating a severe injury in which the eye might be salvaged, in fact, you might want to combine celandine with a different herb to treat infection. Which one is of course up to what is available and how severe the infection... or if you are looking to prevent as opposed to combat. Different herbs provide different traits as you will learn in time. Celandine however is best used to help with damaged or injured eyes. While it doesn't help with any infection, it seems to really help the healing of the eye itself, making it a must have for any warriors that might have gotten scratched during combat if trying to save their eyes! Irritation is also helped with celandine, so point for you on that, you clever lad!

Now... are we all clear on this, or do you have any questions? I'm always all ears to those, love. If not though... Ready to move on to... hmmm... perhaps the most used of these infection combating herbs that is oh so useful for just about everything in the every day life of the clans?"
Lightningstorm mewed, excitement running down her spine, her voice turning giddier the longer she spoke. Herbs were such fascinating things, after all!

Ohp- Rabbitpaw ducked his head a bit in slight embarrassment, but no cat got everything right the first time! He would just have to remember it properly this time around, it would probably help that this was a proper lesson rather than a brief explanation before... a lot happened. So they were yellow, and had four petals, like clover but sunny! He's surprised that he wasn't more familiar with the little flowers after the explanation, he was a tunneler after all, or was he supposed, and with all the digging and exploring getting stuff if in your eyes from time to time was unavoidable. Though usually he just blinked a lot and then tadaaaa all better.

Poultices... alright, and then eating was something he already knew, were there other odd ones? Like special methods like with celandine? Yellow flower but not something that fights infection? Has he seen Miss Lightningstorm use yellow flowers before?? He recalled the aftermath of the raid on Riverclan, recalling making it back to camp to be treated. It was sort of hazy, and even though that wasn't too long ago, it felt like it was some time ago. Then a memory was pulled up when he thought about his own injuries and he almost lifted a paw to look at the pads as though the dreaded moss paws were still there.

"Yellow flowers fight infection? Like the dandelions you used on my paw pads when they cracked and stuff? Also what you said about soaking the herbs, can you do that with other herbs or is it a special celandine thing like the treatment method and the specific healing it does. Also if you can soak other herbs can you drink the water and get like the healing effects still?"

"For the most part, yes!" Lightningstorm purred with approval at her apprentice's catch. She hadn't made a point of specifically pointing it out so much as allowing the remark to slip out naturally. The fact that he had noticed despite her casual mention meant he was paying proper attention. A must if he wanted to learn the many herbs she had by now memorized and apparently refused to let go of even when her memory had failed her.

"Mind, not all yellow flowers help fight off infection. Celandine here being one such flower that doesn't seem to fit the group. Most others I know, however, seem to be categorized somewhere among the infection fighting herbs, with varying degrees of efficiency. You wouldn't want to use something rare and potent on a minor scratch, but what is available and when is always something that should be in the back of your mind. As useful as marigold can be, for instance, it's not always readily available. Same with dandelion. Coincidentally, two of the most common flowers whenever they are in bloom... and a good thing too. You will be using both more than most other herbs in your time as medicine cat.

As for your other question, I usually incorporate water on any herb I want to make a poultice with if it's dried out. Realistically, flowers, herbs... the likes, they don't last all that long in the wild. We have a narrow timeframe to gather them, usually only parts of a season for most. Very few last multiple seasons at a time. So, the way I go around this is by drying them off. Down in the herb storage. I'm sure you've seen the indentations on the walls and how all the herbs are divided? There's a reason for that, and it's more than just me enjoying a bit of organization, I'll have you know,"
she purred, eyes glinting before she paused, realizing she was getting off track. Offering knowledge that while vital useless if she did not give him the basics to work with first. Perhaps it was time to bring the conversation back to beginner level information before she truly overwhelmed him on his first day?

"I'll teach you all about that later on, though. Precious little you'll be able to do knowing how to dry herbs but not knowing any herb to dry in the first place," Lightningstorm mewed teasingly, tail swaying lazily behind her. "Instead, what do you say we go back to that marigold we were talking about before? Brought an example for you and everything!"

From among the herbs she had chosen to use as showcases for Rabbitpaw, the herbalist picked a round, still fresh marigold from behind her. Its almost sunset color was odd, darker than the usual marigold, but brought forward for this very reason. It would stand out more to the newer, inexperienced medic and potentially be easier to recognize in the future. There were of course flowers that looked like marigold, but none that were identical to her knowledge. And none anywhere close to as vital as this one was to a medicine cat's storage.

"This is marigold. Found throughout most moons with the exception of early newleaf and leafbare, this particular bloom is especially useful for injuries such as cuts and bites. The reason for this is because not only does it stop infection, it also slows down bleeding! Now, you can't just bloody well smear the petals into a bloody injury and hope for the best. You need to grind it down to a poultice. Some medicine cats prefer chewing down on herbs, but personally, I don't care how sweet a flower smells, if it tastes like arse, I have no intention of chewing it down. Instead, I use the smooth boulder and pebble I'm sure you've seen me with to make the poultices. The downside of this being that if the herb was dried out my own spit won't help make it into a paste, but as we stated before, water works just fine for that.

Another thing to keep in mind is that while it does stop bleeding, it doesn't work miracles. You are probably going to want to stop heavy bleeding yourself. I myself am fond of using mushrooms such as these,"
she mews, rummaging through the group of herbs she brought until she pulled out a brown, pale, flat topped mushroom to showcase. "To help stop bleeding. Smash them with your paws into a poultice and slather it on top of flowing injuries. It will help soak up blood and hopefully make the injury easier to manage before you can actively put a proper poultice on it that will be more useful than anything the mushrooms themselves can manage. While they are great for stopping heavy blood flow, you don't want to leave them pressed against an injury, either. They offer no benefit outside of their absorption and there are better, cleaner ways of binding injuries once the mushrooms have been removed and the medicinal poultices have been administered. Keeping up so far?"

Rabbitpaw
He/him | WC Medicine Cat Apprentice| Moons: 12 | Part Manx cat

Rabbitpaw brightened considerably at Miss Lightningstorm's confirmation of his observation, his stubby, rabbit-like tail wagging behind him. Yes! So he was getting some things.. Though his attention was taken away from that as he leaned in, as though physically focusing himself as well as mentally, as his mentor continued to explain. Dandelion and marigold, yellow flowers, grow around the same time... Not always available but incredibly useful when they are. "Is there anyway to preserve the herbs? Or maybe like... hmm..." He trailed off for a moment, a paw rising to gently wave around as he thought something out, "Well... It's the ice and frost that kills the herbs right? What if we move them somewhere safe? Is that possible?" He asked genuinely curious.

He had never heard of moving plants... the most he's done is taking plants out on accident while out tunneling or whatever. Sometimes, when he took a moment if he could to try and rebury them elsewhere, they wouldn't really last. Though maybe that's because he doesn't know anything about them. Surely, as a medicine cat, he would need to know more about how the plants grew and stuff, not just what they do. What if he ruined a plant by accident?? There had to be a lesson on the plants themselves, surely. She was speaking again.

"That makes sense. I knew that there had to be some sort of organization system of sorts.. I was worried about messing it up so I haven't really touched anything." He blinked as suddenly Miss Lightningstorm was pushing a marigold towards him and he set himself on the task of memorizing what it looked like. Round, so many petals, all bundled up in a golden color. It was very pretty. It was also very different from dandelions, which was Miss Lightningstorm's other example of infection fighting flowers. "Ohhh alright! So, the marigolds are going to go away soon then." He frowned a bit, learning about such an important herb and realizing that it was soon to die from the season around the corner... hopefully they wouldn't need it too much.

Well, Miss Lightningstorm said there were other options so he should just learn those as well. "I supposed that makes sense." He recalled how bitter some herbs were when he was assigned to gather them and that was just carrying them around... oh... "Actually I think that's a much preferable option... Should you wash the stone off in the stream afterwards?" Cleanliness was not a trait of his, but even he understood the need to start keeping his paws and pelt cleaner... though sometimes old habits die hard and he is a bit mindless. He's trying to wash his paws more at least?

"Oh really?" He said genuine curiousity in his tongue, "I never even would've thought of using mushrooms on a bleeding injury. Cobwebs." He stops trying to recall the most basic things that he knew from watching the clan after the battle and from his very own injuries as well, "And moss?? Are those better, cleaner binding injuries? Oh- Yeah, I think I understand all of that! Marigold and dandelions are really helpful, and help infection, marigold... marigold also helps slow blood, but mushrooms are better, but mushrooms aren't good for binding wounds. OH! And dandelions and marigold don't grow in leafbare. Uhm, and poultices, and water is helpful." He summarized, hoping that he hit all of the most important points of the lectures.
