Honeypaw was a little old for this. She knew that. It also felt slightly wrong to train with a warrior other than her mentor, but she was worried about going on a hunting patrol without actually being able to hunt. Not sure about how Twilightstar or Crowtooth would feel about that. As she padded towards where they were going to train, she turned to her teacher for today. "So, where do we start?"

He needed to get out of camp. He had spent the last moon confined to the nursery of his own volition, never straying far from his dying mate. But now that Bravebird was gone…

Hawkfur needed to step up. His kits were a moon old, and he had to be a warrior they could look up to. With Crowtooth now deputy, Hawkfur knew it was time to continue forward and return to his duties. That meant picking up patrols and training, mostly. That was why he was out here today, teaching Honeypaw to hunt. Hunting was his favorite thing to do other than stargaze, and he was happy to help out any apprentice who needed it.

As Honeypaw asked where they were going, Hawkfur flicked his long plumy tail. “We start by going over the basics. Crouching, scenting, stalking, pouncing. Go ahead and scent for prey. Tell me what you find.” Even though the Fury was still obviously in grief, his voice was soft and warm and his eyes crinkled at the edges as he gave Honeypaw a slightly tired smile.

Honeypaw attempted to scent. It took a moment, but she recognized something familiar from the prey pile. "I think I smell a bird...kinda like finch..I think." She didn't think that the basics would be too hard. Don't cats like...naturally know how to do all that? She wasn't quite sure of that, but she supposed it wasn't that important right now.

"I remember that smell from the prey pile...am I right?" She tilted her head, waiting for the fury to respond.

Hawkfur nodded. "Precisely. Scenting comes naturally to most cats, though sometimes when there are too many scents it becomes difficult to pick them apart." Hawkfur scanned the grasses idly before turning back to Honeypaw. "Tell me. What do you think is the most important part of hunting?"

She paused. Most important? "Maybe..umm...maybe not making noise?" That didn't sound right but she wasn't quite sure. A lot of stuff seems important. She figured she'd learn the answer to that in a moment though.

Hawkfur smiled patiently as Honeypaw gave her answer. "You're partially right--but getting a bit too specific. Not making noise is part of not getting caught. You don't want your prey running off on you while you're trying to hunt, do you?" He snickered. "Well, part of the fun of rabbit hunting is the chase, but for normal prey, you want to try to get as close as possible before pouncing."

"Now," Hawkfur began, slipping into a experienced hunter's crouch and gesturing for Honeypaw to mimic him. "Not getting caught involves a lot of things. Your crouch is important, as it is the basis for stalking and pouncing. Keep your body low to the ground, tail flat behind you, and legs spread out to balance your weight. Go ahead and try."

Honeypaw watched the fury's positioning and attempted to replicate it. She was able to do it mostly correct, though she wasn't perfect at the leg spreading and keeping balance. "Is this alright?" She hoped to be correct this time, though she wouldn't be particularly bothered if she hadn't done it correctly immediately.

Hawkfur gently nudged Honeypaw's back legs so they were better spread to keep balance, then circled her and nodded, a beaming smile on his face. "Yeah, great! You wanna try catching something?" They could sit here and practice all they liked, but in the end the best teaching was done on the job!
