Fadingdawn padded down the slope into the training hollow.

“Hunting crouch. Show me,” She instructed Cardinalpaw with a whisk of her tail. ”You need to learn how to hunt before you can learn how to fight. Feeding your Clan is more important than defending it.”

Cardinalpaw padded after his mentor into the training hollow and stopped. The tom blinked, and dropped into a crouch. His tail was stiff and close to the ground, and his paws were close together.
They narrowed their eyes, something not feelingright about his position. Cardinalpaw shrugged, and looked up at his mentor for her response.

The pale-ginger and white tabby circled the young tom, green eyes narrowing thoughtfully as she examined her apprentice’s stance.

“Tuck your hind paws in closer to your belly,” Fadingdawn meowed firmly with a wave of her tail. “It will add more power to your spring when the time comes to see if you can catch something.”

The WindClanner clawed up a few strips of moss and packed it tightly into a ball. She set it in the middle of the hollow. “Leap forward, and see if you can land squarely on this ball of moss. If you can, then you’re ready to start hunting for your Clanmates.”

The apprentice nodded, and fixed his paws. His tenses his muscles, preparing to leap onto the moss. They focused his gaze on the ball, and pounced. He had almost misjudged the distance, and he skittered towards it for a split second, but their paws landed squarely on the moss ball, and he grinned. Cardinalpaw looked up to his mentor for approval.

Fadingdawn nodded approvingly, tail swaying behind her. “That was an excellent start, Cardinalpaw, but..” The Warrior paused, unsure of how to word this.

”If you go skittering like that in a real hunt, you’ll go straight through the heather and scare away any other prey nearby,” She explained, padding towards Cardinalpaw, paw steps soft. “Go back and try again from the same distance, and don’t stop until you don’t skitter at all.”

The young apprentice took his claws out of the mossball, looking less enthusiastic, but still determined.
He went back to his original place, and crouched again, much improved than before, and prepared to leap again. He (almost) successfully judged the distance, but his paws landed just behind it. He growled, and dug his claws in.

Fadingdawn watched through narrowed green eyes, tail swaying behind her as the wind buffeted through her white and pale-ginger tabby fur.

“Again,” She chimed with a whisk of her tail. “Don’t stop until you get it right. When you manage to, I’ll let you catch a couple of pieces of prey for Twilightstar and Lightningstorm.”

Cardinalpaw turned, and padded back to his original spot, again. They dropped into a hunting crouch, and prepared to pounce again. The mossball was looking a bit..rough..but that didnt cause any issues. He didn't want to hesitate, but he wanted to properly judge the distance. He sprung, because it felt too long (it wasnt really) and his paws landed squarely on the moss ball. Cardinalpaw grinned, and looked over at his mentor.

A warm purr welled up in Fadingdawn’s throat, and she padded over to the dark-ginger and black tom.

“That was great,” The Warrior praised. “Now, tell me what you can smell.”
