Briarmask

Briarmask sits in a shaded little spot in the clearing, watching the cats around her with a quiet interest as her tail sways gently to and fro, brushing over the grass. What she attempts by doing this most days is to figure out what her clanmates are feeling. For example, a tabby cat near the fresh-kill pile is smiling after grabbing a plump mouse from the top... is he agitated that he couldn't get the sparrow that other cat grabbed before them? Well, it's not like she'd be able to find out, she'll probably never talk to them anyway. She rests her chin on top of her fluffy paws, then sneezes when her fur tickles her nose- hopefully she didn't draw any attention to herself. She looks around just in case, before giving her paws a few swift licks and laying her head back down, ears still pricked (again, you can never be too careful).
"The shade is so nice..." She mumbles to herself, her eyes half-closed in contentment, it's nice to not have to squint.
She feels bad for Windclanners, the sun must be unbearable for them with so little undergrowth to shield their poor eyes.

Acornfall strode confidently into the camp, dropping his catch in the fresh kill pile. He beamed with satisfaction when a tabby clanmate of his took the mouse he brought with a smile. The brown tabby dipped his head with a purr. “Enjoy it, friend!” He meowed boisterously with a hearty laugh. Having done his duty that day as a warrior, he examined the fresh-kill pile himself. Doing his usual routine, nosing through the pile until he found an unwanted scrap of a mouse. Acornfall grabbed the mouse with a satisfied nod before striding away.
He plopped down unceremoniously under a partial shade. While most of his clanmates were clinging to the sun for warmth, he didn’t mind taking a shadier spot. He had been running about the territory hunting after all, his patrolmates and him got some good exercise! He didn’t mind the cooler temperature of the shade. He set his meal down and took a careful, selective bite, careful to eat around the bones. Wouldn’t want to choke! He almost did though when he turned to wash his gaze over his clanmates, mostly checking that all was well, when he noticed he had sat next to a clanmate. He was startled, blinking in surprise. He hadn’t noticed anycat there before, he didn’t think any of his clanmates were looking for shade in the height of leaf-fall.
“Hey there!” He purred a greeting, swallowing his mouthful of mouse. “Hope it’s not disruptive to you if I eat here! Want some?”” He offered without hesitation. Though he did feel a little bad it was so scrawny, he hadn’t anticipated sharing and this was usually enough to keep him going. Normally, he’d offer a clanmate something much better than this. “Sorry, I know it’s not much.” He added with a light, awkward chuckle. He hoped his clanmate wouldn’t take offense to it. He’d seen this cat around the clan (obviously), but hadn’t really interacted with her in the past. Hmmm…what was her name again? Briar… An ear twitched thoughtfully before a bright, toothy grin crossed his face. “Briarmask, right?” He made it a point to learn the names of his clanmates, he hoped he got it right!

Briarmask

Briarmask freezes as a cat approaches her, this... is very unexpected. What does she do? Does she say anything? Should she even breathe? He doesn't seem to even realize she's right here next to him, should she just ignore his existence? Or is that what other cats consider rude? Her eyes dart about nervously, her plumed tail tucked under herself. The anxious little molly nearly jumps out of her pelt though when her eyes meet his, then he starts choking... oh starclan! Is he okay?
She jumps to her feet, half-concerned, half-startled. But right as she's about to make an attempt at saving the poor guy, he recovers and starts talking to her. Oh no. Oh no, no, no, no. This is an immediate abandon ship moment, does he expect her to speak? Oh mousedung, is he annoyed that she didn't help him when he was choking? Ah, well Briarmask freezes mid-panic when she hears her own name. Coming out of his mouth. Wait, does she know him? How could he possibly take note of such a tedious detail such as her name? She's fairly certain this is even her first time talking to him! She... has to talk to him now, doesn't she? It takes her a moment to piece together what he was saying, as she most definitely was not paying attention, but figures out what he was talking to her about for a moment. Oh, she hadn't realized until now, but she squeezed her eyes shut when she was having her little panic-attack. That explains why it was shadier than usual. The silky molly shakes her head, opening her eyes and timidly, slowly turning to face the cat. She looks to him, to the mouse, and back up to him again. Wait, why did he get such a scrawny piece of prey when there were surely much better ones he could've chosen? This leads her to frown, though it's just a tad too confusing for her to unravel the answer behind that question for the moment at least. Oh right, she's talking now, she'd forgot.
"Uh, I'm- I'm okay... you barely have any f-food as it is..." She says with flushed cheeks, communication is harder than she would've anticipated, "Y-yeah though- I'm B-B-Briarmask. I'm sorry, but I don't know your name..."
If she really thinks hard, she knows she's seen him around, but his name illudes her nonetheless. Oh starclan it's embarrassing to socialize, she didn't realize how soft her voice is until now, actually having to use it and all.

Acornfall felt a stab of guilt when he realized he had startled as much as he had been startled himself. That’s no good! He tried to relax his stance, which probably seemed a little clumsy given he was such a broad-shouldered tom but he didn’t care. He didn’t want Briarmask to feel so jumpy around him, he wanted his clanmates to feel safe around him. He blinked when she pointed out how his prey was no-good for sharing, a bit taken off guard but not because he thought it was rude. Mostly because he realized, again, that she was right. He let out a hearty laugh, his whiskers twitching in amusement. “Ah, you’re right! I hadn’t known I’d be eating near a clanmate, or I would have chosen a bigger piece to share.” He admitted with a goofy, toothy grin. “Are you hungry? I can grab you something from the pile?” He offered, tilting his head slightly to one side. His eyes were sincere.
“Oh right! That’s rude of me!” He meowed with another laugh when she pointed out he didn’t introduce himself yet. “I’m Acornfall! It’s a pleasure to officially meet you!” He purred, dipping his head. “I’m pretty sure this is the first time we’ve actually spoken.” He explained with a chuckle. He hoped he didn’t make her feel too awkward or anything.

Briarmask listens as the tom, now known to be Acornfall, speaks. Her posture is still awkward and she's still rather on edge, but he seems nice...? Is that what being nice looks like? She can't quite place what that flurry of expressions mean, but he's not saying anything mean. Just puzzling... What is that? He kind of looks like her... worried or anxious perhaps? She can't quite tell, but his words help to clear at least a little bit up, like his name.
She blinks though as it registers that he thinks he's being rude, is he? She didn't think so, in fact, she was too worried about being accidentally offensive herself that she didn't realize he might be thinking the same thing as her. She studies him, he seems... warm. That's all she can really think to describe him as. But she's still quite puzzled, what did he mean by that, he would've gotten a bigger piece of prey if he knew he was going to share. That mouse seems hardly enough for a tom of his size, isn't he hungry? And then he offers to give up half of it for another cat he just met? By starclan, who is this guy? She can't decide whether that's kind or foolish, it makes her want to go get him a bigger piece of prey. Her impression of him so far is... mixed. He seems friendly, but also... well she just can't place it. Are all cats this confusing? Well, with her lack of emotional understanding, probably.
She tilts her head to the side, contemplating a response to all those words. She can't think of a specific one, which is slightly disappointing, so she'll just have to wing it. Uhg, socializing is hard.
"That's okay, I'm n-not hungry. But don't y-you want to, well- don't you want to eat more...? I m-mean, didn't you want to get a b-b-better piece of prey for yourself? Or did you accidentally grab a scrawny piece and w-were too embarrassed to get a different one...?" She trails off, her voice growing even softer toward the end due to the embarrassing amount of words she just spoke, "I m-mean, I- I do that sometimes.."
It takes her a moment to realize her cheeks feel a bit hotter than usual, which brings her to the conclusion that she's blushing. This conclusion only makes her blush more.

lThe broad-shouldered brown tabby laughed at Briarmask’s, perceived humility. But he couldn’t resist the thought that he had failed his clanmate in some way. What if she wanted some prey but didn’t think he could handle it or something? She didn’t seem the type but… I have to trust my clanmates. He nodded to her. “Alright, but if you change your mind just say the word!” He purred. He didn’t want her to think he couldn’t take care of his clanmates. He turned back to his meal, carefully pulling the flesh of the mouse from the bones. With leaf-fall in full swing, he didn’t dare take more than what he minimally needed to get by.
Remembering hungry leaf-falls past, he knew this would do for now. His ear twitched at her question. Acornfall lifted his deep, dark amber eyes and blinked at her in surprise, swallowing the mouthful he had in his mouth. What does…she mean…? He knew what she was saying of course, but he’d never had another cat ask him something like that. Most of the time, it was obvious. Although, he had to admit that the thought of her approaching the fresh-kill pile and accidentally selecting the wrong prey, then being too bashful to select the right one, was adorable. He couldn’t help another hearty laugh at the image.
“I’m sorry!” He purred happily. “I’m not laughing at you, I promise!” His whiskers twitched with delight. This cat was highly entertaining to be around! “No cat has ever asked me about that before.” He admitted with a soft, warm smile. “Honestly, I chose this piece for myself intentionally.” He stated, curling his tail around his big paws. “With leaf-fall here, I know it’s more important than ever for our queens and young cats to get more food. This,” he flicked the tip of his tail towards the remains of his mouse, “is enough to keep me going for now.”

Briarmask jumps a little bit as Acornfall's loud laugh fills the air, and it takes her a second to relax enough to open her eyes. It really is a horrible habit to have, imagine she gets startled or freaked out in a fight, it's not like she can call 'time out' and whoever she'd fighting will not take the chance to strike her down when she's blind. She shivers at the thought of a fight, confrontation and violence, two of her worst fears bottled up in one torturous activity. Though, aside from that less than pleasant thought, Acornfall's laugh is... a sound she likes to hear. It's very warm and bright, it kinda makes her want to make a silly face so she can hear it without missing out on his expression that time, she imagines it to be just as warm. She doesn't have to do such foolish things though, as her clanmate bursts into another lovely burst of laughter. Though she'll admit, she definitely flinched again- but her face is doing the warm face where her mouth automatically curls up into a 'U' shape, oh! He's doing the same thing as her! They're matching!
Briarmask's smile is small and cute, a bit awkward, but she's out of practice so she's justified. She was once again not paying attention to his explanation of her question, oops- But she can just recount what he was saying, it's all good! She's really lucky she has a photographic memory... The smaller molly's face scrunches up as she recalls what he said, remembering the gist of it. So, it was on purpose? Oh, so she was wrong in her assumption that everyone did that. Starclan that's embarrassing- she probably made a complete fool of herself! He may have insisted he wasn't laughing at her, but she's almost one-hundred percent positive that was a lie. Her face flushes as her eyes dart around all flustered-like, trying to look anywhere but at Acornfall. He must think she has bees in her brain, of course that wasn't a normal thing! She takes a deep breath -an attempt to shake off her discomfiture- thinking through his words again to come up with a response to keep the conversation flowing, hopefully away from her little misunderstanding. Wait a second, he said something confusing again! Why would young cats need more prey than him? He's the one who needs more food, it's not like they're the ones who are hunting for the clan every day, going on patrols, and fighting for the clan. On top of all that, he's obviously much larger than a kit, a kit probably couldn't even finish what he's taken for himself. What a silly logic to follow!
"But don't you need to eat m-more than a kit? Young cats and queens aren't d-d-doing nearly as much as y-you are, you're just as important as t-them, right?" She reasons, tilting her head to the side as she shyly focuses her gaze back on him, "You n-need some g-good food to keep you going, you'll s-starve if you only eat this much..."
She pouts slightly, but it feels weird to make such an expression, so she quickly wipes her face of the expression (after a couple moments of trying to figure out just why her face is doing what it is). Anyway, after that little thing, she pads over to the fresh-kill pile and grabs a good-sized sparrow before timidly rushing back to her companion. She did not think that through, there were a lot of cats over there. Too many of them. Briarmask breathes a small sigh of relief when she reaches Acornfall, at least she knows him... ish. She then sets the sparrow down in front of him, taking what's left of his mouse and sitting down next to him.
"I'll trade you," She tells him, her mouth making a 'U' shape again, that's twice today that she's smiled!
After a couple seconds of the close proximity, she scooches over slightly, clearly flustered again.

"I'll trade you," She tells him, her mouth making a 'U' shape again, that's twice today that she's smiled!
After a couple seconds of the close proximity, she scooches over slightly, clearly flustered again.
Acornfall caught on slightly that he startled her again, and felt a stab of guilt. But it didn't seem to be too bad, she hadn't fled from him after all. And she seemed to recover relatively quickly. The question she posed him caused him to pause again. He had never thought of it that way. A thoughtful expression crossed his face, but even pensive he was still smiling softly. “Hmm...I hadn't really thought of it like that. The warrior code teaches that the vulnerable - kits, queens, and elders - are to be cared for first.” He meowed, his voice soft as he considered Briarmask's point. “They can't look after themselves like I can. If a queen can't feed her litter, they might starve and then the clan would suffer.” He pointed out. Not to mention that would be a complete tragedy. But her next point made him completely freeze.
“...you're just as important as t-them, right?”
No cat had ever said something like that to him before. Usually, warriors were rewarded for the frame of thinking Acornfall was expressing. Not that he did it for the praise, he did it because he wanted to. But he had never had another cat not simply agree with him in some way. He didn’t know how to answer her. If he starved, who would take on his contributions? Sure he could say that another clanmate would fill his pawsteps, but is that the case? Wouldn’t that create a chasm in the total efforts? Even if another warrior contributed enough to fill the void left by his death, it would be twice as much if he were alive right?
Now he had a headache.
But all of that was swept away from him when he was faced with Briarmask’s pouting face. Even when it cleared and she got up and walked away, he sat there. Jaw agape. That…that was…a-adorable! Acornfall felt heat rush through his body, his whiskers trembled with excitement. What was that? What was this? StarClan help him, what was anything anymore? He blinked when she returned with larger prey and offered her clever “trade”, and couldn’t help but grin. She had spunk! He couldn’t help but give a hearty laugh.
“Well, I can’t turn that down now can I?” Not that he could say no to that smile either. It almost felt too bright to look at. He bowed his head gratefully, noticed her scoot away and unable to hold back the tiniest of frowns, a pout of his own. On instinct, he leaned forward to touch his nose to her ear in gratitude, and quickly pulled back. Shuffling his paws bashfully. “Thank you for this.” He purred, ignoring the heat under his pelt and taking a bite from the prey she brought him. “You are very kind.”

Briarmask's expression is thoughtful as she processes his words, his expression seemed so weird in that moment, but somehow she feels that he understood her. She glances over at him and pauses, her brow scrunching up as she's met with a rather confusing sight. His face is... different. Now it's an upside down 'U.' What does that mean? She tries not to overthink it, but isn't it the opposite of the 'U' shape his mouth made before? Doesn't that mean it's the opposite of good? Is he mad at her for trading with him? Does he not like her? Or is it that he doesn't want to talk to her anymore? Is she too boring? She doesn't like that expression. It makes her question everything. Should she ask what it means? Or would she be weird if she asked that? From what she's gathered, most cats understand emotions. Ah! What if he thinks she's super weird and runs away? She fights the urge to block out the expression by closing her eyes again, that would probably make her look even more mouse-brained. No, she'll just have to face her many fears and ask him. Not a big deal, right?
"Hey Acornfall...?" She leans in close, her face tinted a rosey red, "What's the meaning of your face?"
Oh stars. She just had to phrase it in the weirdest possible way, didn't she? She just had to mess up. She bites her lip, her tail wrapping around her hind leg as she resists the impulse to break eye-contact. Amidst the worrying and awkwardness, she fails to notice just how close her face is to her companion's.

Acornfall was peacefully enjoying the prey Briarmask brought for him. He had to admit, the fresher flesh of this bird was a lot more satisfying than that mouse had been. He could feel energy flowing through his body from the sparrow, his tail waving high behind him in joy. Briarmask perhaps had a point…he knew he felt re-energized now and would likely be able to be more productive tomorrow. He didn’t forget his manners, though his bites were greedier than before as he felt his energy restore, but then he felt a presence closer to him.
Briarmask’s scent flowed around him, and he froze for a brief heartbeat. Lifting his head sharply, he blinked at her in surprise at her question. His face? When he…oh dear. She noticed his facial expression when she moved farther away. Now what? The question seemed innocent and genuine, she wasn’t teasing him. He hastily cleaned his face and whiskers to buy time, trying hard to keep himself from becoming too flustered at their renewed closeness, before looking back at her and blinking warmly. “I-I was just a little…sad I guess when you scooted away.” He admitted bashfully. A genuine question deserved a genuine answer right?
Stars he sounded silly. “I mean, I was enjoying our camaraderie and closeness.” Yeah, sure. That made sense right? He failed at keeping himself from feeling flustered, completely taken off guard by the question. Not the question itself but the way she asked it, like she truly just wanted to know. She’s so…pure and innocent. C’mon Acornfall. Keep it together!
