You feel the glass start to crack.”
Right, this was their first proper lesson since Covepaw was assigned to him. They had gone hunting after a failed swimming lesson, and they had gone on the mock patrol. But this was the first proper lesson, Seabreeze would say, or maybe first lesson on the normal curriculum. Though in his opinion the mock patrol is something that all apprentices should be taught to help better their warriors in the future. Maybe he should talk to Fadingstar about that. Anyways, it was time for battle practice. Never a dull moment within the clan and he had learned the hard way how much of a priority this was for apprentices within the aquatic clan. Beanpaw.... He sighed. Pushing the memory away, the lionheart made his way over to the apprentices' makeshift den. "Covepaw, good morning. We are going out for some battle practice, time to meet the day." He called in, albeit playfully which surprised himself for moment. It's been awhile since he has just allowed himself to just be. And he guess that meant... he doesn't know the words... being soft with his apprentices? Maybe? Whatever doesn't matter.
After the apprentice joined him out of the den, Seabreeze launched into an overview of the planned lesson. It should be something simple enough for the eager apprentice to breeze through and then maybe they would have time for more advanced moves as well. Though Seabreeze felt a little out of sorts when it comes to battling. He's never been any good really. Perhaps he should seek out Fadingstar and then have a spar, sharpen his own skills and gets some tips for teaching his apprentices so he does them well. Seabreeze didn't want to pass on any bad habits, he wouldn't forgive himself if he did. "Today we are planned to go over the basics. Stance, dodging, basic moves. If we have time we can go into more complex maneuvers as well. The leap and hold, the usage of speed and analysis on the battle field. If we have time, if not, we will postpone the advanced battling for another day. I also want you and Duckpaw to have some partner battling practice as well."
Blue eyes met the apprentices eyes, "Any questions? Anything in particular you wish to learn? Battle and general wise?"

Covepaw got to his paws, eager as soon as he heard Seabreeze call his name. Training, his favorite thing, second to exploring of course! He met it with the same excitement he would meet anything, except something he hated. If he despised nothing, it was clear as soon as you saw his face. His ears would pin back and he'd either give a look of disgust or horror. Or maybe even between the two! Covepaw smiled at Seabreeze, literally ready to meet the day. His paws were practically the only thing indicating that he'd been waiting to get outside. More preferably into the territory. Covepaw wasn't particularly fond of trees, however, when you lived right next to them, it was hard not to get used to the icky feeling. Now, it wasn't replaced for a fondness for this place, but what would complaining do? It most certainly wouldn't help and Covepaw hated being annoying.
"Okay! I'm ready,"
He mewed enthusiastically, following Seabreeze out of the den. His paws were more or less moving for him. He just couldn't bear his excitement! Even though she had passed, which made him sad for a moment, Splashgaze definitely didn't take him out like this. It was almost, well, like holding a bug in your paws! It was ready to fly away, yet was forced to be grounded. But now he felt like he was free, free to fly and soar and go as fast as he wanted! Maybe it was just because the level of respect he held for his mentor, but whatever the reason, he was happy he was reassigned to Seabreeze.
He perked his ears as Seabreeze started explaining the lesson. it sounded awful simple, for being something like battle moves. He'd seen the way some cats contorted their bodies and sometimes it made him wonder how'd he do it, too. Then he heard the word "Basics" and immediately eased. Basics was where everything needed to start, he thought.
"Alright, I trust you! I'll make sure and ask Duckpaw when we get back to camp!"
He grinned, maybe he and Duckpaw would become friends after all! He shook his head as he had no questions. Covepaw continued, bouncing, across wherever they went, now happy that a new friendship he wanted to happen, could be possible.

No questions yet it seems, but perhaps that would change once they actually get into the lesson portion of their day. Seabreeze leaded the young apprentice from camp and into a small more open space not too far away. It would do for the task they have set out in front of them. The lionheart slowed and then came to a halt before turning to face the apprentice head on, his blue eyes looked over Covepaw.. His mind went to Frostmelt for a moment before he could catch it and he was forced to suppress a wince at his missing friend. He misses Frostmelt. Maybe the other would return to him one day. Though for now, Seabreeze would do him well to finish his apprentice's training.
"So the first thing we will be going over is a battle stance. Do you remember that hunting crouch I taught you not too long ago? A battle crouch is similar, you bend down not so much and keep your paws wider but its similar that you want to keep your paws light and even, but for the purpose of dodging rather than stealth. What do you think is the most important thing to know in a fight?"

Covepaw nodded his head, a bit surprised when Seabreeze turned around, but he was still a-okay!
"Yeah, I think! Though I'm not really good at it."
He got as low to the ground as he could, belly barely hovering above the bare-earth. He could feel legs shaking ever so slightly. His tail didn't move as he crawled forward. He tumbled a moment later, sighing then bouncing right back up. Maybe he wasn't all that bad at doing it, it was rather holding the position. He figured he'd get better with time. His legs were still growing, he assumed, so he would surely develop the ability to hold a crouch later on!
Covepaw listened to his mentor as time went by. Battling sounded exhilarating, thrilling even! He pondered the question for a while before thinking anything up. What would the most important thing be? He figured balance or stance. It made more sense to him. You could know any matter of moves, but how you executed them seemed rather important!
"Execution, balance, or stance!"
Covepaw smiled, not sure he got it right, but was glad he tried anyways.

Seabreeze tilted his head as thought over the apprentice's answers. I wasn't one that he was thinking for the answer but it wasn't too far off the mark, it certainly wasn't something that he was expecting. "Well, that all applies as well. But truly, in my opinion, it comes down to your ability to dodge and understand your opponent. It doesn't matter how well you can hit if you are wounded too badly to continue. It's a balance, almost like swimming, it comes with practice and it comes with risk. If you fail you risk your life." Seabreeze blinked and realized how intense that was, "Sorry, but battling isn't something as prideful and full of honor that it seems while in the nursery." He readjusted his paws under him to rest more evenly, and therefore more lightly, ready to dash any way as needed.
"But with learning how to dodge, you learn how your opponent may do the same, how to counter certain things, how to get your enemy where you want them. You manipulate the battle field as you please... but that's much more advanced.. we'll be starting with the basics. To begin, show me your best battle stance."

Covepaw inclined his head. That did make sense! His answers were merely what made up fighting, not what was important to know. He continued on with Seabreeze, not taken aback by the sudden shift. He knew what the real world was like, even if he liked living in his optimistic mind. He frowned for a moment, suddenly upset. He grumbled, staring at the ground. Come on, get it together! No matter how much he tried to shake the thought from his mind, it wouldn't help. He wasn't really angry at his mentor at all, but his heart said he was.
"I know that,"
he said rather sharply. His eyes stung, he clenched his maw shut for a moment.
"I'm not oblivious even if I act happy or excited all the time."
Covepaw said this with a lighter tone. He really wasn't angry. His emotions were evoked because of the comment that had shattered any barrier he had. It wasn't Seabreeze's fault, it was his own. He'd been thinking about Splashgaze too often. He assumed she'd retire soon after mentoring him, but instead she'd met fate with red all around her. It just didn't seem... fair. It made his heart ache, but he had time to deal with it out of training. Not here with his mentor. It was a waste of his training time, and Covepaw was not pleased by that thought.
"Sorry,"
he mumbled, getting back on track with the training. He'd been disrespectful, and he was extremely sorry about it. Why would he do that? Grief was no excuse to lash out at cats, or a cat you looked up to for that fact.
Covepaw crouched low, trying to position his paws like Seabreeze did. He grinned when he was able to hold it for a while. Wow! He was doing it, he was really doing it!

“Ocean waters rising above your neck
You feel the glass start to crack.”
Seabreeze blinked, he hadn’t expected that reaction from Covepaw. Even if it held no flames of real anger, it still wasn’t in character for the other. Though what did Seabreeze know about Covepaw really, they had only met in a training situation, where they were focused on learning things. He hadn’t really known and didn't really know Covepaw… what a testament to his being a mentor. Because mentoring was more than just teaching the skills of the warrior, it was about being ready to be a warrior. And that meant things like… emotional maturity and like… other things that Seabreeze was beyond terrible with. He needed to be someone that Covepaw felt that he could go to when facing something outside of lessons.
Seabreeze didn’t know how to be that though.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean.. I was-” He froze and stopped for a moment before continuing, “I shouldn’t have assumed. I guess I was just thinking about what I expected when I was going into training.” Not that that was an excuse for dumping that kind of pressure on a young apprentice, especially not one that has lost mentors and has lived through such an attack and was driven from his home. It was clear that Covepaw wasn’t naive when you thought about it like that… but he was just. “You don’t need to apologize. We can go over what tends to be targeted the most.” Because Seabreeze didn’t know how to continue this conversation besides focusing on a task and that task was teaching.
“Some common spots are your face, ears, tail, chest, and hips.” Seabreeze himself carried scars on his snout, chest, and was missing his tail so maybe that could help reinforce what he was saying for the most part. “Though people can get creative as well, what are some other spots you think can be targeted?”

"Can you feel it? The ocean has a profound healing energy."
--------------------------------------------------------------
Covepaw felt awful for his sudden burst, but didn't want to bring it up again. It wasn't like him. Why was he acting this way? It felt like he was drowning in deep water, even though he knew, somewhat, how to swim. He could do this. He would do this. Training! Training wasn't hard, it was like steps, small steps, okay, maybe big steps. But steps weren't difficult to achieve, unless you couldn't step any- ugh! Why was he doing this? Snap out of it Covepaw!
He slowed his pace for a moment, trying his best to focus on what Seabreeze was saying. A question- he needed to answer that question, right? Right. He thought more than he usually did. Normally he spat out the first thing, without giving it a second thought.
"Well, uhm... the paws, and the stomach area,"
Covepaw held himself back, tone quieter. It was awkward in a way. Well, if he wanted to escape it being awkward, while he waited for Seabreeze, he could think about what triggered his "meltdown." Splash... Blue eyes, blue pelt, was certainly one reason. Maybe he needed some more time to himself. Ever since they were driven out he didn't have time to think about anything, to process it. Not that that was an excuse, just a thought for him to chew on. Maybe he should communicate the need to Seabreeze? Though when that thought crossed his mind, he shook it off. Confrontation wasn't his strongest attribute, and certainly one of the weakest.
Thinking started to make him tired, so he stopped. It wasn't useful if all it gave him was a headache. He still had training to focus on after all! And with Seabreeze, things were just that much better. Maybe things were meant to be this way for a while. Not for a lesson but rather for him to learn to adapt. To realize a lot of things Covepaw hadn't thought of before.
His eyes flickered to his mentor, cold blue eyes fixated on his next words.

Re: Crashing waves, Sea Coves [P]
Seabreeze Right, things felt awkward now. Just focus on the task, Seabreeze, he could do that and he needed to do that. Alright, so umm. Those were good suggestions. The lionheart nodded his head as he glanced away from his apprentice. "Right, those are both good suggestions. Though you have to be careful about paws, easy to get countered. Though easy to utilize against an enemy that is going for them." He explained as he recalled his own time in battles and what he has learned from his mentor and precious teachers. "A lot of fighting happens in vice versas."
"How about getting into some basic moves then... um, right the front paw blow is pretty standard." Seabreeze lifted one of his front paws and pulled it up and then struck the open air ahead of him fiercely and quickly from experience. He did the move again, but slower so that the apprentice could track his movements better. "Usually you aim for the shoulders, face, or ears with this move. If you impair the shoulders you can manage to impair movement, the face is pretty self explanatory, but while ears can't prevent your enemy from attacking, getting battered hard enough can create an opening has your enemy reacts to the pain. Ears are usually pretty sensitive. Do you want to try?"

[ So umm, idk if you wanted to continue this but here you are <3 we can start a newer RP if you would prefer because timeline is all funky now. ]
