cobwebfern's exhaustion was getting the better of her. she had been awake for an awful amount of time- at least three days straight- and she just couldn't fall asleep. she sighed, eyes reflecting the moon as she listened to the rest of the clan softly sleep. eventually, she stumbled into her den and collapsed, three legs splaying out from under her and then unconciously curling up as she fell into a deeper sleep.

It was colder in Nathaniel's den than she remembered. After the fire, Rhiannon and her kittens moved in, which meant the den was a veritable furnace that had Eaglepaw occasionally slipping out of the den to sleep on the bridge under the stars. Leaffall was here, and with it would come the bitter cold that killed herbs and drove prey underground. He was gone again, maybe killed in the fire, maybe snatched by twolegs, or maybe he finally admitted that he was nothing but a worthless coward and fled. So Eaglepaw was alone with Nathaniel and his family, an outsider in a group of outsiders. Occasionally Coconut or Sparrow would visit, but often Eaglepaw was alone with the kittens, entertaining them as they healed from their injuries.

She almost missed RiverClan. Almost.

Maybe that was why she cracked open an eye to see the old apprentice's den in RiverClan. Well that explained the cold. The walls were shattered, fur caught on brambles and waving in the chilled air. Eaglepaw stepped out of her nest, in the corner where she had set it long ago with Mossypaw. Eaglepaw stared down at the moss for several heartbeats, now grown out of the nest both physically and mentally. She scoffed at it, shaking her head and moving towards the exit of the den. The clearing was desolate, so different than the chaos of battle she had left it in. If she focused hard enough, she could see paw-prints scuffling in the dirt, an echo of the battle that had changed her life forever.

Eaglepaw caught sight of herself in a puddle, admiring with a cold gaze her disfigured face. Her scars were stark against her ginger and cream fur, the watery light through a thick layer of clouds blanching her exposed skin a pale pink. Her teeth were bared in a permanent snarl on the left side of her face, scars stretching up towards her eye and over her nose bridge. Her front left leg was twisted with scarring, but had healed significantly better than her face. She scoffed, swiping at the puddle with a cream-colored paw and washing the reflection away.

"Dusklion." Eaglepaw called, irritation clear in her voice. "If you have brought me back to convince me to return to RiverClan, my answer is still no." Wicked claws stained by herbs dug into the sandy earth. Her emerald gaze caught on the entrance to the medicine den, and she couldn't resist the sneer that grew on her heavily scarred maw. She could almost see young Eaglekit, desperate to help, running in and out, lead around on a string like she could actually be useful to the clan.

She hated being here. She hated who she was when she was in RiverClan--a useless kit and then a jaded, paranoid apprentice. She had fallen into darkness under the care of her mentor, emulating his cruelty while simultaneously fearing it. Perhaps it wasn't Fadingsun's fault--she imagined that leadership had corrupted him just as her paranoia corrupted her. But RiverClan was a disease that had taken root in the forest, and Eaglepaw had no interest in being its conduit. So whoever or whatever summoned her here would have a difficult time keeping her here.

But little did she know, she was the one who summoned someone. Someone she hadn't talked to in a long, long time. Someone who previously had thought her dead.

cobwebfern woke up in her old resting place. the riverclan warrior's den. oh. so this was a dream. okay. she flexed her claws, and placed a tentative paw on the ground, hoping it wouldn't dissipate and wake her up. she hadn't created the dream- or whatever it was called, she had only had a few starclan dreams and they had all been with cats trying to teach or tell her something. cobweb's paw didn't completely break the dream, so she placed another one down, shivering in the cold. she stumbled out of the den, three legs subconciously walking over to where she and eaglepaw had used to sit and eat prey. her eyes were cast down so she didn't see the cat standing in the center of the clearing until she had sat down and looked up.

to see.. someone.

a cat she hadn't seen in moons.

a cat she had thought about constantly since learning she was gone.

a cat she had previously thought was dead.

well.. maybe she was dead and this was a starclan dream. no matter. cobwebfern dashed full speed at eaglepaw and bowled her over, three legs scrambling for purchase on the ground as she wrapped two around her former best friend, lost for words. quickly she righted herself, wobbling shakily and staring at eaglepaw.

' you're alive. ' was the first thing she said, voice full of wonder. ' well- well, i mean, maybe not alive. but you're here. you escaped the raid- are you okay?? oh starclan. you're here. i love you. '

A grey blur shot out from the corner of her eye and Eaglepaw whirled, claws extended and a snarl on her lips. Even as a lithe body smaller than hers rammed into her front and sent them sprawling, Eaglepaw was ready. She twisted out of the way, using her strength and the attacker's momentum to throw them over her body and onto the sandy ground. Eaglepaw snarled, a broken and ripping sound like tearing flesh and bone. Whatever had brought her here would not get the better of her! Threat, threat, threat! Her mind screamed, clear in the pinpricks that had become of her emerald eyes. Flashes of blood and pain invaded her vision and she shook her head to clear it, heart racing in her chest. She wouldn't be brought down again! She wouldn't be hurt! Not! Again!

But then... recognition flared in her haunted gaze. Recognition, pain, sorrow. Guilt. "C-Cobwebpaw?" Eaglepaw rasped, tears beginning to spill down her mauled cheeks. "A-are you--is--is this real?" And just like that, Eaglepaw was nothing more than Eaglekit again, openly weeping at the sight of her best friend. Eaglepaw closed the distance between them, throwing her forearms around Cobwebpaw's neck and burying her face in her friend's fur. The tears wouldn't stop, even as Eaglepaw tried to suck in deep breaths to ward off the wracking sobs that shook her shoulders. Mossypaw, Fadingsun, Dusklion, Rushwater--she had lost everyone she ever cared about. She had been willing to live as an outsider for the rest of her life if it meant never experiencing the pain of living in a clan again, but seeing her friend right in front of her... "'M sorry, 'm so so sorry--I couldn't come b-back, I-I couldn't! It was too much--I was so angry all the time a-and I didn't want to l-live anymore a-and--" The words were a tumbling rush, a confession that Eaglepaw had been keeping inside her heart for many, many moons.

the tripod let out a whimper before letting tears flow, the way eaglepaw snarled like she was foreign breaking her heart, an ache that hurt her down to her core. she crashed to the ground, not trained enough on three legs to be able to land without a considerable amount of struggle.

cobwebfern had barely managed to place a paw on the ground and haul herself up before evidently, eaglepaw recognized her and closed the distance between the two of them. wracking sobs mixed with her best friend's fur as they cried together. ' eagles- it's okay, i-i'm not ma-mad- it's- o-okay- ' her voice shook and she slumped back to the ground, bringing eaglepaw with her. she curled all three of her legs around the apprentice, hugging tight with her whole body so eagle could never get away. she couldn't leave again.

The pair stayed like that for who knew how long, Eaglepaw wrapped in the embrace of an old friend that had haunted her dreams for the moons she had been gone. Finally, when the tears had abated and Eaglepaw could breathe again, the former apprentice pulled away, looking Cobwebpaw over. Her emerald eyes fell on the molly's back stump where her leg used to be. Eaglepaw met Cobwebpaw's gaze, her eyes hardening. "Who did that? Was it someone during the battle?" Eaglepaw was suddenly extremely aware of her maimed face, glancing away so Cobwebpaw wouldn't be staring right at it. A horrible thought occurred to her--was it Fadingsun? Had he gone off the deep end and continued maiming cats who defied him? But no... Fadingsun--star--was gone. Dusk--Stormstar, had told her. Eaglepaw swallowed thickly at the thought. Despite everything, Eaglepaw had felt an almost sibling connection to the tom. She supposed that was the kicker in his downfall, then. Just like Rushwater, everyone Eaglepaw considered family went insane.

Suddenly Eaglepaw was very afraid for Nathaniel and his family.

Pushing the thought aside in favor of focusing on her long-lost friend, Eaglepaw steeled her nerves and focused on a new topic. "Did you get your warrior name yet?" This version of Cobwebpaw... she seemed stronger. Smarter. Together. Eaglepaw wanted nothing more than for Cobwebpaw to be okay. "We've got so much to catch up on." She tried smiling, but it came out watery and unconvincing. She was still a little rattled, after all.

cobwebfern choked out a wet laugh, still holding on to her best friend for dear life. ' mm. during the battle, yeah. a shadowclan- by the scent, i think, never seen them before.. yeah. they screwed up my leg enough that.. misty had to lop it off. ' the newly named medicine cat apprentice managed another laugh, sitting back. ' stars above! i have so much to tell you, eagles- eagles!! it happened!! i- okay, so. b-berryshine, now, berrypaw was misty's medicine apprentice, then misty kinda- i think she's havin babies, we haven't seen her 'round for a while. '

cobwebfern paused for breath and then continued, aiming to completely finish her Riverclan Recap quickly. ' so misty's gone- 'nd berryshine is our medicine cat now! riverclan got our new camp, 'n' berries and dusk went to the starcave, 'n since fading ran off and died.. good riddance.. dusklion is stormstar, now, and when they were comin' back from the starcave berries told storms tha' she wants n' apprentice, and I'M THAT APPRENTICE. ' her word vomit concluded, she wheezed and inhaled, catching her breath again.

A ShadowClan cat? Had it been Minkpaw? The memory of Minkpaw shredding her face flashed in Eaglepaw's mind, and she winced slightly, the scars stinging with phantom pain. She opened her mouth to apologize for not helping Cobwebpaw, for... whatever she could apologize for. But it seemed her friend was already moving on, detailing the happenings of RiverClan since Eaglepaw had left. Mistyshard disappeared (surprising.), Berryshine (lovely name!) was the new medicine cat, and--

Eaglepaw froze, eyes wide as she stared at Cobwebpaw. "Fad--Fadingsun what?" Her voice cracked, eyes wide with surprise and wet with... sorrow? What was the ugly emotion curdling in her chest? Horror? Disappointment? Satisfaction?

He may have been an awful leader and a terrible mentor, but he was still something to Eaglepaw. Mossypaw's death, Rushwater's latest disappearance, Nathaniel's inactivity--Eaglepaw had thought that even though Fadingsun was as unreliable as the rest, he would at least stick around. The worst sort of cats always managed to stick around. But there it was; he was gone. "Good riddance". Yes... she supposed it was good riddance after all.

But Cobwebpaw continued, detailing that Dusklion was Stormstar now, and by the enthusiasm in her friend's voice, she was doing a good job. And Berryshine... "WHAT?" Eaglepaw shrieked, staring at the feline in front of her with her scarred mouth agape. COBWEBPAW WAS THE MEDICINE CAT APPRENTICE??? HELLO??? Eaglepaw lunged forward again, wrapping her paws around Cobwebpaw's shoulders. "COBWEBPAW THAT'S AMAZING!! I'm sure you'll do great!!" Cobwebpaw was one of the most dedicated cats in RiverClan--even if she could be a little obsessive, her heart was in the right place and she could finally put her skills to good use. Eaglepaw's chest rumbled with a deep purr, joy at her friend's accomplishment overwhelming her.

She pulled away after several moments, smile still on her face. Oh! She should update Cobwebpaw about her life in the recent moons, too!

"I've been busy, while I've been gone. I've joined a kittypet named Nathaniel--" Eaglepaw would never reveal his former identity as Snakeheart, RiverClan's disgraced medicine cat, "--and we've been running a small healing den for loners and outsiders in a Twoleg park. It's not as grand as being medicine cat, but..." The former clan cat paused, eyes growing shadowed. "It was nice. Rushwater was there, but... who knows where that asshole went off to." Her voice took on a sharp edge, claws digging into the sandy clearing floor. Then it faded, and her expression softened. "There was a pretty bad fire that burned down the Twolegplace, and Nathaniel's family suffered pretty badly from it. I've been keeping an eye on them the past moon or so." The thought of Snowdrop and her new blindness sent a pang of sadness through Eaglepaw's heart. But she was a strong kid, she would be alright. Even if Eaglepaw wasn't there to watch over her.

"But--hey, we've both got scars from ShadowClan cats. Granted yours is way worse, but..." Eaglepaw grinned, scarred flesh stretching over pearly white fangs. "Minkpaw couldn't kill me no matter how hard she tried. To be fair, I did try to kill her first for being a rotten deserter, but..." Eaglepaw's grin faded to a weaker version of itself, swallowing past a lump in her throat. "I guess I'm no better, huh?"

Eaglepaw thought she belonged in the clans, but had been proven wrong again and again. Then she thought she belonged with Nathaniel and his family, but even that felt wrong, now. Sparrow already had a young cat following him around, and from the brief interactions Eaglepaw had with her, she was sure she'd skin Eaglepaw alive if she decided to travel with the pair. So, Eaglepaw was alone again. Maybe that was how it was meant to be. But talking with Cobwebpaw like this was nice. She'd miss it. Had missed it, too.

"I'm really, really happy for you, Cobwebpaw. You're going to be the best medicine cat RiverClan has ever seen." Please don't prove me wrong like everyone else did.

' ah, yeah, i'm cobwebfern now. that's. uh.. new. ish. i became a warrior first, and i dunno if my name's gonna change when i graduate and become a full.. guy. '

cobwebfern paused, considering her next words carefully as she listened to what eaglepaw had been doing since her disappearance from the clans. ' eagles.. i.. dunno, if you.. want to.. but.. i want you back. in riverclan. we're doing so much better now, it's not a dumpster fire like it used to be.. i bet if you talked to any of us- high ranks, i mean- we'd all really want you back.. if you met me at the border i could bring you back with me.. it- you don't have to !! but.. i want you to return. '
