Cricket stayed awake while Cardinal rested, keeping her ears alert since Notch still wasn’t back with their other stowaway. She looked at Cardinal sleeping peacefully, and felt a warmth creeping under her pelt that she’d never felt before. Her former group was the only “family” she’d been able to know until now. And that wasn’t much of anything. But now…with Cardinal here she felt like her new group was a real family. Her whiskers twitched thoughtfully. Perhaps it might be time for her to teach Cardinal a thing or two about living in the wilds.
Not wanting to scare him, Cricket lightly touched her muzzle to the top of his head. “Cardinal?” She mewed softly though her voice still had that signature rasp to it. “Can you wake up?”
* He purred in his sleep and stirred when Cricket nudged him. He groaned from tiredness and lifted his head. He looked up at cricket with his eyes clearly plastered with sleep. *
" Mama? Me no Sweep? "

Cricket grinned a toothy grin before licking Cardinal between his ears. She didn’t take his tone as disrespect, but did want to try and wake him up. “Cats who sleep miss out on cool stuff!” She declared loudly. “C’mon! I’m gonna teach you some things.” She stated, rising to her paws to not give little Cardinal any choice in the matter.

Cricket flicked her tail again Cardinal’s flank. “Sleep later. Learning now.” She meowed sternly. Cricket turned to the forest surrounding their temporary camp, wrinkling her nose against the stench of the Thunderpath behind them. She was fairly certain Notch and Freckle were…that way. So then… “This way.” She stated, angling her head in the direction they were going. She didn’t want to run into Notch and Freckle right now. That would only create distraction and noise.
The long-furred spotted tabby led Cardinal into the forest away from the stench and racket of the Thunderpath. A small smile of satisfaction crossing her maw as they left it behind for the scents and sounds of the forest. When she was satisfied they were far enough away, she paused and turned. Sitting with her tail rested over her paws while she waited for Cardinal to catch up.

Cricket flicked her tail in acknowledgment when Cardinal joined her. She had to resist the urge to comfort him and give in, this was for his own good in the long run. Making sure to keep her expression neutral, though her eyes betrayed her warmth, she looked down at Cardinal with a small, encouraging smile. “Good.” She mewed, a slight raspy purr in her voice. “Now, what do you smell?” She asked, intentionally not showing him the proper way to scent your surroundings. She wanted to test the kit’s instincts.
* He looked up at Cricket and nodded. He lifted his head to the sky and sniffed around. Nothing, he then tried to open his mouth to scent the area. He caught the faint trace of mouse. *

Cricket liked Cardinal's instincts. He seemed very in-tuned with the hunter within. She nodded approvingly. "That's right! Have you ever hunted mouse before?" She asked, knowing that the kit had been on his own for a long while.
