It was....adequate. He might be able to catch something that way, though Deadmoon would have preferred his haunches a bit smoother. Thus, and without fanfare, she placed a paw on them, trying to squish them downwards while mewing Get that butt down a bit, I know you feel silly but it's how it's gotta be. It did look a bit stupid the first time, and felt terribly awkward, but it was the way you caught mice and birds, so he had to learn it. Fortunately Turtlepaw didn't seem overly put out about the whole thing, and Deadmoon was content to back off, instructing Now try crouching around a bit, so you can move like that, or similarly. The position might get a bit looser as he moved, but this was a good enough start. @Spooky Galaxy
The walk that leads from camp out to the Sunset Grove isn't a long one, and it's because of this that Crowlight doesn't feel the need to fill the silence with small talk. His feathery tail brushes the tall heather of the moors as he walks along with the excitable apprentice from camp in tow. It dawns on him that he should ask her if she has seen any parts of the territory and start there, but by the time this thought occurs to him they have already arrived near the treeline.
"This is the Sunset Grove, he announced without much fanfare, gray eyes sliding over to Duskpaw who has hopefully followed him out. "...There are lots of... trees, as you can tell-" he was not good at this, "-and prey among them. And herbs, as well I suppose." Not much to his explanation as Crowlight moves forward, paws stepping onto the shorter grass that makes up the floor of the wooded area. Birds flutter about among the tree tops, though he has no interest in hunting at least right now.
It was better, for sure. Not perfect, but Turtlepaw would certainly be capable of hunting something down like this. He could move a bit too, so Deadmoon nodded in response to his question. That'll work. Looking over at the grove proper, and sniffing the air, she was decently hopeful that he'd get a good stab at something. When we head over there, you're going to scent something, sneak up on it in your crouch, and then pounce, like you would on a mossball. Realizing that they hadn't actually practiced the aforementioned pouncing, she inquired Do you want to practice the whole thing on a mossball or something, or have a go at some actual prey? He was probably going to want to go for the live prey, she would in his place, but it didn't hurt to ask. @Spooky Galaxy

Turtlepaw meowed "I want to do live prey and I think I can smell some over there!" he pointed his tail to a bush as he crouched down following the scent pouncing on the prey almost missing it by a mouse hair but was able to catch it.

......and there Turtlepaw went. Deadmoon wasn't surprised at his response, but she also hadn't expected him to take off so suddenly. It was rather impulsive, and could get him into trouble if he was so eager during a battle, but she let it slide. She hadn't explicitly said for him to stick close, after all. And it was pleasing to see him catch something. Good job! she called, wiggling her tail in congratulation. Maybe see if you can find a bird and try hunting that? After all, this was for rodents AND birds, and it would be good for him to experience at least a bit of the difference between them now. @Spooky Galaxy

Turtlepaw nodded towards Deadmoon as he burried the mouse. Stalking again as he heard a cardinal he started stalking at it listening to its heart beat before he leaped missing the bird only getting a feather from it. "AW dang it!"

Well, birds weren't the easiest prey in the meadow. The whole 'wings' thing gave them a bit of an advantage most of their other meals lacked. Deadmoon couldn't resist a little chuckle at Turtlepaw's exasperation, hastily tamping it down lest he think she was laughing at him. Well, she was, just not in a mean way. Really, it wasn't! Just....it was funny! The exasperation! Strong emotions were always a bit funny, seeing as she tried to avoid them as much as possible. They just led to irrationality and stupid decisions.
Once her little bit of mirth was under control, she called out a slightly more soothing That's how it goes sometimes! Birds can fly, and they like to show off that fact! into the corpse of trees. To this, she added Give it another try, you'll get one eventually! and hoped he wouldn't take the failure too much to heart. Occasionally apprentices got really moody when they messed up, for some unknown reason. Ego, or expectations, or something. She hadn't had to worry about that, her ego had been flat as a pancake leaving kithood and all parental expectations had already been flouted. Made learning a lot easier, really. @Spooky Galaxy

Turtlepaw growled playfully underneath his breath at Deadmoon. He shook his pelt and took a deep breath as he stepped on something looking and noticing a flower underneath his paw he yelped and hid underneath a bush shivering letting out fast breaths. Look at that horrible scary thing it was so close to eating me! he cried to himself. He replied from underneath the bush Bird are too quick and feathery." Growling again underneath his breath he meowed. "Why can't we just catch a rabbit its way easier! Then this disgusting bird!" he whined to Deadmoon.

Goodness, Turtlepaw was quite jumpy! Deadmoon wasn't even sure what he had stepped on, but whatever it was had sent him flying for cover. She, once again, couldn't resist a quick chuckle, ambling over to the bush and peering under it at the young tom. 'Ya good kiddo? He seemed quite affronted at the whole thing, which she found pretty amusing. Of course, he probably wouldn't appreciate being laughed at, but it was HARD! He was so...dramatic! Someday there might not be a rabbit around, and you'll have to catch a bird. Even if you don't do it much once you're a warrior, it's an essential skill. She hadn't received a lot of training with stalking prey as an apprentice, so there'd been a period of figuring it out on her own once she was a warrior and didn't have to try and chase the stupid rabbits she could barely catch anyway. This thought in mind, Deadmoon mewed Come on out, and try it again. waving her paw in the direction of the grove proper. @Spooky Galaxy
