Oh. He hadn't exactly expected for Newtbelly to move out of the way, but then again, he is a fully trained warrior. Warriors need to be prepared for anything. The apprentice landed on the spot where Newtbelly had previously been, and swerved to look at the tom. He nodded, looking down at his paws for a moment. Hmm... Something else. He hadn't been taught much, but, sure, he could do something. Probably.
He gave the ground a few taps with a paw before jumping at Newtbelly, teeth instead of claws aimed for his shoulder. His paws aimed for his chest and other shoulder, attempting to pin the warrior down. He... Would have gone for the throat, but he did not figure it would be very necessary. He wasn't fighting for his life, after all.
Silentpaw hesitated, then bolted forward, attempting to pin Newtbelly down. It was an interesting tactic, going for his side, it certainly wasn't something he would've predicted. He was unsure if he would've succeeded in fighting the apprentice off, especially with the element of surprise. Still, he didn't fight against it, allowing the paw to pin him. There was more to teach that way. He plummeted to the ground, soon bested by the apprentice.
"Once you're in a situation like this," he commented, "you wanna use your back paws." He kicked out lightly, not enough to really effect Silentpaw, but enough to demonstrate the movement. "You might be on the floor, but you've got access to your opponent's stomach. So, if you're on the receiving end of that, you need to find a way to counter." Truth be told, it could be a hard one to counter, but maybe a paw to the stomach would do it? Either way, he was planning on moving slowly, so Silentpaw should have the advantage. Slowly, he kicked out with a little more force - not enough to cause any damage, but enough to move the paw away if he wasn't paying attention.

Silentpaw let out a breath as he successfully pinned Newtbelly and nodded along to his explanation. That... Should be easy, right? He countered kicks before, this should be easy job, given the tom was also going easy on him.
But the thing was, Silentpaw had never taken a kick to his stomach. He knew this wouldn't be as easy as he'd wanted it to be.
The apprentice shifted his body, trying to block the kick and keep the warrior pinned at the same time. Okay. React quick.
Silentpaw lifted a hind leg in an attempt to stop Newtbelly's attack, or at least slow it so he had enough time to move out of the way. His teeth then neared Newtbelly's throat and he nipped at the air just above it, not actually wanting to bite the warrior's throat, lightly or not.

Silentpaw reacted well, countering the kick as best he could, teeth snapping above Newtbelly's neck. He was pretty proud, actually. The apprentice had shown really great initiative. "Nice job," he wriggled, trying to push the apprentice off lightly as he got up. "You wanna go over a couple more techniques?"

"Alright," he shook his fur out, thinking of the next thing to teach. Something that would help him if he was thrown into battle, ideally. Grab and hold always seems worth it. Though, Newtbelly wasn't eactly the best target for this. Oh well. He was sure he wouldn't drop the kid. "One tactic that's great for apprentices, and just smaller cats, is the grab and hold," he explained. "It's pretty self explanatory.You jump onto the bigger cat's back, and hold on. That way they have no way to reach you. It works great in a group, too." He recalled the apprentice's fear of heights, but surely his back wasn't too high, right? "You can try it out, if you wanna?" He leaned a little, shoulder anfgled so the 'paw could see where to jump. "I won't do any of the kicking and thrashing you'd find in an actual battle so don't worry about that."

Silentpaw suppressed an amused snort. Grab and hold? It sounded much more like the move kits use on mossballs and queens' tails. He would never have guessed those would come in handy. But now that he thought about it, it did seem like a very useful move. He gave his mentor a nod before jumping at him, attempting to hold the larger warrior's shoulder down with his forepaws and secure his hind legs near Newtbelly's paws. He wouldn't try and get completely on top of him, perhaps just push him towards the ground first.

The paw lept at him, though not entirely onto his back - probably for the better, considering his own size. He was knocked back a bit, stumbling till he fell. "Nice one!" He purred. It was good to see that the apprentice was becoming an adept fighter. Seems he wouldn't have to worry about him at all. "Course, with a bigger cat you could jump straight on their back."
"You wanna try whilst I'm moving?" He invited. That would be a bit harder, of course, but nothing Silentpaw couldn't handle.
