Re: Softpaw's Training [P]

Heroneye sighed, watching the apprentice enter a rare fit of anger. Though she was doing well in the moving in the right direction and not drowning departments, it was clear that she was growing extremely frustrated and tired. "Perhaps it would be best to take a break for now," Heroneye suggested from across the river. After all, that sort of anger wouldn't be much help when it came to swimming.
"If it's of any comfort, you're doing well for your first time," the Lionheart added. Perhaps any words of encouragement she could offer would also be of assistance, if they meant anything at all to the apprentice. After all, she had been doing well so far, and Heroneye expected the lesson would be coming to a close shortly.

Softpaw looked at her mentor and sat down heavily. Sighing. "I'm sorry..... I just... I expected it to be...... easier and the water just, it didn't feel natural and I feel like it should've." Softpaw explained with a guilty green gaze. Softpaw accepted thee praise with a gentle purr of thanks, "I get the motions and stuff, but it's hard to stay in a straight line and it's annoying." Softpaw murmured. "I have to swim back don't I........ dang it."

Heroneye nodded as Softpaw spoke. Of course, not everything could come naturally to her--that would simply be unrealistic. Still, though, Heroneye couldn't help but feel a pang of pity for the apprentice. Perhaps she had pushed her too hard? Maybe it would have been better to start with something easier, like using a landmark nearer to Heroneye's side of the bank... Although, she supposed it wasn't really worth feeling sorry about. After all, Softpaw would have to cross back, one way or another, and fretting wouldn't change anything...
"Swimming is a difficult skill that takes moons to hone," Heroneye said, hoping to bring the apprentice some comfort and confidence. "This lesson is just to show you the basics; nobody expects you to be a master swimmer right from the beginning." Of course, it would take time to gain the coordination, strength, and endurance needed to become a strong swimmer. Ultimately, the most important virtue of a swimmer--or any warrior, for that matter--was patience.

As Softpaw listened to her mentor, the white apprentice become to slowly accept her... wet and cold fate. "Jeez..... alright!" Softpaw meowed, her tone pretty much back to normal, a small shake of nervousness in her tone..... also from the cold. Softpaw blinked towards her mentor. "It takes moons? I thought cats usually just knew how, some of them are so good it looks like they were born swimming!" Softpaw exclaimed, her green hues scanning the water, Softpaw dipped a paw in before leaping into, ignoring the splash, the apprentice went underwater by mistake, Softpaw fought against the current, calming herself as her mentor told her and gently waiting as she floated back up, lifting her muzzle once her head broke free, Softpaw gasped for air. Paddling her small paws towards the other bank, hissing at the water as it splashed her face. Softpaw got dragged downwards again, making her narrow her eyes in fierce concertration and a bit of frustration. Softpaw blinked, she'd reached the other side much faster than she'd thought. Softpaw clung to the wall of the bank, her pelt brushing it as she reached the shallow end. Finally making it back to her mentor she collapsed on the dry ground, panting lightly. "My legs....... are out of commission. For the next 10 moons" Softpaw panted, though her tone was playful and half hearted.

Re: Softpaw's Training [P]
Heroneye
| she/her | RiverClan | Lionheart |
Heroneye relaxed alongside the apprentice. Learning such a complex skill as swimming wouldn't happen overnight, especially since it also required a level of muscular strength and endurance the apprentice wouldn't have needed in her life thus far. But learning to accept and overcome setbacks was a valuable lesson in and of itself--one the Lionheart did not want to be lost on her apprentice.
Heroneye listened to her apprentice's next words with a thoughtful nod. Though it was true that some cats were born with a level of natural talent in swimming that surpassed that of their peers--as with all things--but that didn't mean that one shouldn't put in the effort to hone their abilities regardless. After all, all the "natural talent" in the world was completely lost on a cat who wouldn't put in the proper amount of effort. Something Heroneye knew all too well.
Heroneye was about to say something to that effect--that is, before Softpaw suddenly entered the water and dipped below its surface. Panic immediately rose within Heroneye, her eyes frantically scanning the waves for her apprentice. She was just about a hair away from jumping in with her when the apprentice resurfaced and began to paddle back to the bank, apparently not needing her mentor's assistance.
"Good job," Heroneye said, a hint of weary amusement in her tone at Softpaw's comment. Thank the Stars! No apprentices drowning on my account today! "Your form has come a long way in a short time. It seems your main struggle is with your endurance, but that will improve with time. Provided you continue to practice regularly, of course," Heroneye added. As she'd said, learning to swim would take many moons beyond that day's lesson.

Softpaw nodded, listening to her mentor closely as she panted, catching her breath. "Alright.... I'll practice every day!" Softpaw vowed with a playful hint.

Heroneye nodded, satisfied with the apprentice's vow. "See to it that you do. You'll need to build your abilities up in time for your warrior assessment, after all."
Heroneye's gaze turned to Softpaw; it was evident that she was exhausted. Well, swimming could be a rather strenuous activity, after all. Perhaps it would be best to end the lesson there; Softpaw had already learned the fundamentals, and teaching wouldn't do much good if the apprentice was already dead tired. "If you're ready, I'll bring you back to camp. I'm sure some rest will do you some good." Yes, rest was just as important as the practice itself--yet another lesson the Lionheart had learned the hard way in her apprenticeship.

Softpaw blinked, shivering gently. "Jeez... how long do you think it'll take for me to dry......" Softpaw chattered gently, the coldness reaching her bones through her thin and short pelt. Softpaw yawned once and streched gently, "Jeez I'm going to be soreeee."

Heroneye's whiskers twitched with amusement. Though the lesson hadn't exactly gone as the apprentice had planned, she seemed to be taking it in stride. That was important, too. No cat could get everything on the first try, so being able to recover from a setback was an important skill in and of itself--one that Softpaw already seemed to possess.
"Don't worry; soreness is just a sign you're getting stronger, isn't it?" Heroneye tilted her head, almost surprised by the words that had left her mouth. So... optimistic. She hadn't realized she was capable of expressing such a positive sentiment. A pleasant surprise, she supposed. Although... Well, hopefully Softpaw wouldn't see it as the Lionheart simply dismissing her feelings.
In any case, the Lionheart cast a quick glance in the direction of camp with a flick of her tail. Once Softpaw was ready, she'd bring the apprentice back to camp. Until then, though, she could accompany her for a few moments. Surely nothing earth-shattering would happen to RiverClan if she just... sat around for a few moments, right?

Softpaw looked up to her mentor and gave a gentle purr, "I suppose it is, maybe I'll have this swimming thing locked down before you can say, "I told you so" " Softpaw teased gently, her bad temper not lasting long as she streched once more, it made her limbs feel a bit better when she streched. "Quick question though, what if were in a battle, and lets say we have to swim away or to an enemy. Our claws get softer in the water.... so is that a heavier risk for them breaking? Is there like..... a technique for that?" Softpaw asked, her light green hues rounded in curiosity, now sitting up with her tail loosely around her paws, hoping that her thin fur would dry fast regardless of her being soaked to the bone. Softpaw sneezed once and gave her mentor and apologetic look as she didn't get to look away in time. "Allergies...... I'm sorry" She meowed nervously
