Tail signals, hm? That wasn't something Oriolepaw had ever learned about. He padded over to join the growing group, eager to learn more from one of the few cats he actually respected as a teacher.

Oh joy! Sandpaw was quite thrilled to be partaking in his first event as pale furred paws scampered up to join the group. He didn't recognize some of the cats there, but that was okay! Wide green eyes looked to his mentor and he lifted a paw to wave it in greeting before glancing around to find someone to sit next to. Spotting what appeared to be an... older apprentice? - younger warrior? - the young tom stamped his little paws up to him and took a seat. "Hi! My name is Sandpaw! That's my mentor!" Excitement was etched into his face as he looked to his new friend, nodding as if to back up his statement before looking back to Sootfur to eagerly await instructions.

Seeing his clanmates react to his call and gather under the Thunderwillow, all eyes pointed to him, warmed his heart and encouraged him to go on. He looked around for his mate, but he couldn’t spot her bright orange pelt in the crowd. Aww, she must be busy. I really wanted her to be here…

Truth told, Sootfur wished for Flameheart’s presence as much as he wanted her to see him teaching something publicly. It would be probably the first time that Sootfur would be teaching her something and not the opposite. Well, I’d better get started anyway. Oh, there’s Sandpaw there!
The gray tabby waved his tail at his friendly apprentice, noticing with much pleasure that the young tom was already making friends with Oriolepaw.

There was Foxflurry, Darkpetal, a few other warriors… and kits, too! I’d better keep one eye on them. He reminded himself silently.
”Now, I think we can start with a few basic signals. The most important ones, probably. I’ll show you and I want each one of you to mimic me, alright?” He asked with a powerful, yet calm voice.

1. The stop
Firstly, Sootfur straightened himself and puffed out his chest to give himself a more appropriate appearance. Then, he announced the first signal: ”When I hold my tail suddenly herect like this,” he said while straightening his gray tail, ”I’m telling you to stop. Remember that a tail signal is usually used by the patrol leader to give orders, but not only that. Any cat can communicate with those in moments of need.”




2. Follow me
”Now. Kinking my tail over my back like this means “follow me”.” He curled his tail just over his back, feeling a little bit like a snail, and waited for everyone to repeat the same movement. This wouldn’t be too easy for kits, with their short stubby tails, but it didn’t matter right now. It was the concept that mattered the most.




3. Danger!
”Alright. Pay close attention to this one, because it will most likely be sudden and require immediate understanding from all of you.” Sootfur hooked his tail like a snake behind him, turning around to both sides so that everyone around him could see this signal better.
”Careful, because this means danger. Now please, let’s all repeat these first three signals and repeat their meaning while doing it.” He suggested everyone with focused eyes, scanning each one of the participants in turn.

Also. Keep in mind that you will never be required to describe so well every tail signal when roleplaying. The purpose is more like… giving you a wide range of tail signals that you can use by their simple name while doing patrols or battle ambushes! So no worries, just have fun!

Three at once? Okay, well, that was fine, maybe. She quickly got the stop and follow me down, but danger was giving her troubles for some reason. Maybe it was the general fluffiness or her tail, or her brain just not understand how to do it, but either way, she was struggling. It took her several tries just to get it right, but eventually she did. Hopefully this was one she could get a better grasp on later.

It had taken her a while to think of whether she'd actually join this event or not, but in the end, she would be with her mate and learning things she never did when she was an apprentice. How could she turn down a learning opportunity? Besides, she owed it to him to be there when he was teaching something because it always seemed to be the opposite: Flameheart taught Sootfur.

Straightening her tail just as Sootfur has shown the group, Flameheart murmured, "Stop..." Throwing glances at her mate, she continued and repeated the 'follow me' by bringing her tail closer to her shoulders and murmuring the corresponding words. Bringing her tail back with a lash, the Keeper curved the base of her tail and made the tip of her tail point to the sky. "Danger..."

Lets try and memorise these, Feathernose thought to herself. The stop signal was easy and simple. Straight up in the air. Curl your tail over your back to say "follow me," and the last one, danger. That one looked like the way a snake moved. That made sense, snakes were dangerous. She copied it that one too.

Cinderpaw watched each tail signal carefully. She wasn't exactly participating - she didn't have much of a tail to do it with, no matter what her brain tried to tell her - but it was useful she know them.

Darkpetal followed the tail signals. It seems the apprentice has become the mentor... he thought with amusement. Echopaw also copied the tail signals.
