Her younger sibling looked to be doing worse than Heathernose had thought and the tortoiseshell frowned. She sat beside them and wrapped her tail over them affectionately, giving a comforting nuzzle and a sympathetic frown.

“I heard what happened, I’m so sorry, I know you two were close.”

Shockpaw’s second statement drew a sigh from Heathernose and she shook her head sternly, wanting to help but knowing there was little she could do. All she knew was that it wasn’t Shockpaw’s fault that their friends had disappeared and the younger cat needed to know that.

“It’s not your fault, Shocky. You aren’t driving anyone away- cats have complex lives and we have no way of knowing what was going on in the parts they don’t show us. And as hard as it may be to think about, we do live dangerous lives... there’s always the chance that someone just... was in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

She didn’t want to tell Shockpaw that their friend could be dead but Heather also almost wished they knew what had really happened to him. At least with closure Shockpaw could know that it wasn’t them who’d played a part in the other’s disappearance.

Shockpaw leaned into their older sister's touch. It felt oddly comforting despite everything.
"He was- he meant everything to me. I thought we'd have our warrior ceremonies together. I thought he'd be a great warrior, a good fit for Windclan."
Ears folded backwards they looked away briefly, paws still running over and over the smooth shell, almost a wordless mantra.
"He was my best friend."
They knew. The knew, they knew, they knew the possibility of him being dead was there. It was there and it stared them in the face and it laughed at them.
"I know in my head. I know it wasn't."
And yet some small, loud part of their mind said otherwise and silenced the logical part of them that knew better.

Nightleaf sighed. "Shh, you'll wake my darlings!" She rolled her eyes and moved Flipkit over, in case he struggled to suckle again. "ShadowClan is another Clan. And I have no idea why they're talking about it." @~Radiantshine~ @Shadow & Wind

Echowind licked at her shoulder scar, which was bigger than it was before the fight. I knew it was fine. After licking it clean she looked back to Snailswirl. @elysian

It tore Heathernose apart to hear her younger sibling talk this way, but she didn’t know how to help- not really. She couldn’t bring Shockpaw’e friend back and she knew how much it must have hurt to have lost their dream of the two of them together. The tortoiseshell watched Shockpaw’s paws for a moment before looking up at their face. She got the feeling that the tom might have been more to Shockpaw than they were letting on.

“Was he... was he maybe... more than your best friend?”

Shockpaw smiled sadly, but shook their head.
They'd cry if they could, but they ran out of tears for anyone long ago. So very long ago. They wished they did. He deserved at least a tears or two.
"No. He was.... one of the only best friend's I'd had in a while."
They understood with the way they spoke about him and how much they hurt over it why she'd think that. But, no. Smolderpaw was just a good friend.
They didn't see toms that way, anyway..... or did they?
Honeypaw seemed to be the exception, but for the most part, no, they didn't.

Heathernose nodded, feeling bad for prying. It wasn’t really her business what he was to Shockpaw but the molly had wanted to understand how to help her sister. So they were best friends- the loss of a best friend was no less painful than the loss of a significant other but at least Heathernose knew now the relation between the two.

“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have pried.”

The molly thought a bit about what she could possibly do for the younger cat. She thought perhaps if she were to lose a dear friend that some form of closure or a way to honor them. That gave her an idea.

“Would you like, perhaps, to choose a place to honor him? We could mark it someway and bring flowers- it might help you feel close to him. And it doesn’t necessarily have to be a memorial for death if he hasn’t died, simply a memorial to your time together.”
