Orangetwist knew how to spot a forced smile -- mostly thanks to Ruecall -- and could clearly tell that Otterflight's expression was anything but natural. She, however, didn't want to make him feel uncomfortable or more upset than he already obviously was, so she didn't mention it. She also refused to mention the tone he used -- one that suggested he was very unsure of himself -- for most of the same reasons. "That's the spirit!" Orangetwist meowed, loading even more energy and enthusiasm into her words in hopes that maybe optimism was contagious and he would catch a very bad case of it.

Otterflight couldn't help but laugh at Orangetwist's seemingly endless enthusiasm. Then he couldn't stop. He laughed until he could hardly breathe, coughing and wheezing. And yet he still laughed, unused to feeling so optimistic.
Otterflight looked up at Orangetwist, flicking a tear from his eye. "Ahem. Sorry about that. You're just...well it's hard not to smile."

Orangetwist visibly brightened up. It always made her so happy to hear people say things like that. "Don't be sorry!" she purred. "I'm always happy to make others feel good!"

"Oooooh!" She meowed. She'd never heard of a cat who couldn't hear. Questions flooded her mind - How would him hear cats sneaking up behind him? Or prey rustling in the undergrowth? Mountainkit realized the queen seemed annoyed. Or tired, she couldn't tell the difference. "I promise not to tease him about it," she reassured.
