The few moments to get back on her feet were appreciated ones. She resisted the urge to shake her pelt; one did not look pretty when fighting. There was only a heartbeat or two to catch her breath and get back into a crouch before Newtbelly launched himself at her. It was as risky of a move as her own had been. Smokefern leapt backwards, only a few pawsteps away from where he landed. Not dwelling too long on her success, she tried to swipe a paw across his muzzle. A surprisingly simple counterattack, all things considered.
Ah, that didn't land - not really a surprise. Next time, maybe he could steal that tree trick - or find a rock to jump off. Never mind that though, he needed to stay in the moment. Smokefern's paw was flying straight toward him. It smacked him right in the nose (ow), but he'd use the motion to turn, aiming an explosive back kick for her shoulder.
Smokefern let out a hiss as pain bloomed in her shoulder. That would still be sore in the morning. She stumbled a few steps to her side, preferring that over trying to resist the momentum of the attack. There wasn't much time to recover however, if she wanted to press the offensive. With as much strength as she could quickly muster, she sprung at New belly's side, trying to knock him down. It was more of a swift blow than a power one, but she was hoping his attack would have left him easier to bowl over.

Stars, he'd thrown his own balance off with that one, and Smokefern was quick to move. He was tumbling down now, headed to the ground - if he was right in his thinking, Smokefern would soon have him pinned.

Pale eyes narrow as Newtbelly landed on his back. It wasn't to say that she hadn't expected it to work, but a healthy dose of wariness was better than going in with reckless abandon. Especially when dealing with an enforcer. They had a sort of expectation in her head, that they were skilled fighters. After all, they did have to prove themselves in order to obtain the title. Nonetheless, it was a moment of hesitation. There was just enough time between Smokefern's attack and her attempt to jump on top of him for Newtbelly to try something.

It looked like Smokefern was going for a pin, or at least to jump ontop of him - it seemed the most reasonable course of action. If he went down here, he wouldn't be too shocked, she was far older - scarred too, which counted for something. Still, he wasn't done yet. The tom thrashed out with his back paws, hoping she didn't have some kind of clever counter in mind.

Smokefern cursed. In the middle of a pounce, she saw the attack and couldn't really change course. Not without crashing on her side right next to Newtbelly in any case. That at least seemed to be the worse option, so she landed on top of him. With a pained grunt, she took the blows, thankful that this wasn't a real fight. The older warrior leapt off as soon as she could, and wildly flung some mud towards his face. A dirty move to try and give herself a moment to recover.

It was good to know he had enough strength behind his kicks to throw Smokefern off - he did worry about it. He wondered if it would match up the same if he were fighting a burly thunderClan cat, but he didn't pause on the thought for long. He writhed to get up and protect his vitals but was quickly stopped in his tracks. A cloud of dirt - he closed his eyes, hard, expecting dust, but no - it was mud. Right over his eyelids. Ack! He'd screwed his eyes shut too hard too, his tear ducts burning from the mud. The tom staggered to his paws, attempting to wipe his eyes on his shoulder. They weren't clear still: he couldn't open his eyes. But he had to move. Hr lashed out with his forepaws, hoping to keep any attacks at bay, but they were wild an uncalculated swipes.

Now wasn't the time to hesitate again. Smokefern didn't want to take too many more hits, and she wasn't going to squander the opportunity she made for herself. Of course, a blinded enemy could still be dangerous, as shown by Newtbelly's wild strikes. She tried to stay out of range, but still managed to get clipped by one blow as she rushed back in. Her paws went for his hind legs, trying to knock the Enforcer back down and put a paw on his neck.

Ack - he couldn't see anything. He blinked furiously, trying to clear his vision - as soon as it came back in, all he could see was Fernsmoke lunging for his legs - ah. Oh no. She was already far too close, there was barely anything he could do. In a last ditch effort, he attempted to wack her away with his forepaws, but they landed on thin air. Then he was down. Darn it. There was no point in kicking when a paw was right across his throat. "Nice work." He smirked, trying his best to hide his deflated ego. Mud was still dripping down his face - he looked a mess. "You've got some smart moves."
As he'd expected, he was bested by a more experienced warrior. Perhaps Fernsmoke was a stronger fighter than the average ShadowClanner - he wasn't sure - but if she could beat him, that meant he still needed to get better; lest anyone step forward and challenge his rank. He knew it must be coming soon.

Smokefern lifted her paw off Newtbelly's throat and took a step back. It was enough room to allow the Enforcer to get up. She took a few moments to catch her breath, enjoying a cool breeze as it drifted through the clearing. "A quick enough wit to make up for average strength. You're rather skilled yourself. If this were a real battle, I wouldn't be thrilled to go up against you."
A polite compliment, though Smokefern was rather humble. A faint grimace adorned her features as she looked at the mud covering Newtbelly's face. She turned, looking around the clearing. It was in a familiar part of the territory, and she only needed a moment to regather her bearings. "There should be a stream around here, if you want to clean up."
