The demonstration was helpful. Though his mentor was... What he would describe as childish... At least he was a decent teacher. The young apprentice pays close attention to what he says and does, tucking it into the folders of his mind to access later. Later being now that he was being asked to replicate the movement. He simply nods in understanding and eyes his opponent. The big bad root that shifted with his unassumingly strong mentor's strength.

Move quickly, get beneath your enemy... He could do that. There was advantages to being small, even if they were few and far between. Rushing forward the small tom ducks beneath the root to push up against it's underside with his back. Of course it doesn't budge as Hillstrider had made it do, but he executes the movement the way he was shown. A lot better this time for sure.

Hillstrider beamed at Bitternpaw when he turned to gauge his success with the manuever. "That was great, little dude!! Okay, now I want you to try to knock me over again!!" He seemed way too excited for this, eyes glimmering and paws jittery with enthusiasm. "Remember to get firmly under me, but not all the way otherwise I can just--" he mimed flopping down "--crush ya. No good. You dig?" Once Bitternpaw was ready, Hillstrider motioned for him to try again.

[ Bitternpaw rolled a 12 to knock Hillstrider over. ]

Alright. Time to put the lesson into practice. Golden eyes gleaming with buried excitement of their own he lunges forward at his mentor. Skidding to a stop before him causes a bit of dirt to kick up from the ground-- which was his intention. He is trying to catch the larger cat off guard with the tactic so hopefully it works. After he's come to a stop he crouches low and pushes up against Hillstrider's belly with his shoulder, hoping it's all enough to knock him off balance.

Hillstrider jerked back as dirt flew up into his face, making an impressed noise at the apprentice's creativity. He felt his chest bark in pain as Bitternpaw jammed his shoulder into the soft light orange fluff, jerking upward. Hillstrider, still reeling from the dirt attack, was caught off guard and sent tipping over like a cow in a field. Landing with a heavy "oomph", Hillstrider glanced up at Bitternpaw. "Hey! Good job, kiddo!" He sprung up as though nothing had happened, shaking the dust from his pelt.

"Next we'll go over what to do once your opponent is on their back." He reached out his claws and mimed a swipe at the ground. "You can either use your front claws, or bunny kick your hind legs. Anything to get at their soft underbelly." Hillstrider glanced around, catching sight of a pile of moss. "Oh! Okay, try on that. Pretend its your opponent that you knocked down, and leap up onto them and attack!"
