* He listened to Cricket and calmed down. M-maybe he could trust them. He didn't try to move his hind leg at all afraid it would start bleeding again. He shivered a bit from the cold wind and looked up at Cricket. He mewed at her and decided to snuggle against her fur for warmth. *

Cricket almost leapt out of her fur, staring at the kit like she was stuck in a monster's bright gaze. What the heck was it doing?! More importantly why?! Now what am I supposed to do? She looked around to see if Notch was coming back yet but didn't see him. With a groan, she wrapped her tail around the tiny scrap of fur, her pity winning over her internal struggle. "Just this once..." She grumbled reluctantly. Eyes and ears attentive for danger, and for Notch. What's taking him so long??

As if summoned, several heartbeats later Notch returned, his hunt successful. He carried a squirrel and a mouse, but as he approached he had to freeze to take in what he saw. Whiskers twitching with amusement. He ignored Cricket's hiss and set the prey down. "Leave me some of that squirrel." He instructed Cricket without looking up, he knew she was already reaching for it.

She grumbled but did not argue, keeping her tail wrapped around the kit almost protectively. Notch couldn't help but chuckle softly. He bent over he mouse, taking a bite and chewing it until it was a mush the kit could lick up. Hopefully this will do... With no milk, he had no other ideas. Notch dropped the chewed mush near the kit, giving him an encouraging blink. "There's no milk." He tried to explain, hoping the kit was old enough to understand. "Try this."

"Waste of prey if you ask me..." Cricket grumbled, talking while she chewed.

Notch hissed at Cricket in warning. "When you have a better idea, let me know." He snapped back. Satisfied when Cricket merely rolled her eyes and ate her half of the squirrel in peace.

Notch looked back the kit. "C'mon." He mewed encouragingly. "Try it."

* He smelled the mush and his stomach rumbled. He took a bite of it and his eyes lit up. He started to gulp as much of it as he could down. The feeling of a somewhat full tummy was amazing. He never had this feeling before. He purred and finished. He looked up at Notch and then at Cricket. These cats were nice to him. He curled up against the warm fur of Cricket and started to doze off. *

He curled up against the warm fur of Cricket and started to doze off. *

Notch shot Cricket an amusement look, ignoring her glare. If looks could kill.

"If you say anything..." Cricket growled.

Notch shook his head, he knew better than to comment. "Don't worry." He mewed. Then he noticed the kit's leg and couldn't restrain giving Cricket a knowing stare, to which she of course hissed at him. "You cleaned the wound?" He noted verbally.

"What of it?" Cricket challenged.

Notch simply shook his head and dropped it. At least the kit ate, his wound was clean, and now he seemed like he was getting rest. Notch looked around to see what he could find for bedding. He walked around and collected a pawful of moss, returning and laying some moss around Cricket and the kit. He continued this process until there was a good nest, including some bits of ferns and grasses he was able to tear. Satisfied, he sat down and finished off what little was left of the squirrel, and what remained of the mouse. Then buried the remains.

He looked up at Cricket and the kit, who was curled up tight in the curve of Cricket's tail. Something about the scene brought him peace.

* He purred quietly. The warm fur makes him comforted by the big she-cat. He stirred a bit and mewed with a hint of distress. He was having a nightmare and it was definitely a bad one. His mews of distress were met with one of his first words. His voice very high pitched. *

Cricket startled, realizing that she had dozed off. She looked around for what woke her, and realized that the kit was squirming. Then she heard his mew, and a stab of...pity was felt in her chest again. She looked over at Notch, but he was also fast asleep. Cricket groaned quietly before bending over the kit. She gently licked his tiny body, the way her mother had done for the brief moment that she had her. The memory was foggy, but she kept it strong in her mind, clinging to it tightly.

She hoped this gesture would comfort the kit so he could sleep. Then maybe I can get back to sleep... She convinced herself that was the only reason she was doing this. Her ears rotating to listen for Notch. She would rather throw herself over a gorge than let him see her now.

* His squirming ceased and he purred lightly. He snuggled close to Cricket and snored quietly. His nightmare now gone. *
