A bitter cold was sweeping through camp; Leaf-bare was fast approaching. The clans were preparing for the dreadful season. Prey was getting scarcer each day.
A young molly sat outside the apprentices den, her ears tucked back against the chill, her thick ringed tail tucked tightly over her small paws. Ringpaw hated the cold. Ugh, she thought. I don't know how I'll be able to take this then she shook her head. don't be so dramatic, Ringpaw. Letting out a tiny sigh, she stood on her small paws and padded over to the Fresh-kill pile, nosing through the measly pickings as she shuddered from the cold. Frowning a bit, she huffed and settled on a scrawny water vole, picking it up in her jaws and padding back towards her spot. Her intent was to eat and then sleep in her nest, not wanting to do anything, she was gaining a bit of a lazy streak.

However, a strong chilly breeze flowed through and she dropped her meal as the cold air blew into her face. "Agh!!" once the wind died down she grabbed her meal and, with eyes shut tight, dashed towards the den- only to smack! run into another cat.
Ringpaw teetered a bit before regaining her composure enough to glance up and see whom she had run into.

"O- Oh! Maplepaw!!" Ringpaw dipped her head in apology before glancing the other she-cat over, her medicine cat instincts kicking in. "Are you alright, dearie? I rammed into you pretty hard..."
The older apprentice rested her ringed tail over the other cat's shoulder, a soft smile on her maw. She pushed her water vole towards Maplepaw with a forepaw. "You can have this."

Morningpaw had never really minded the rain. Maybe that was just a Riverclanner thing; the love for water ran through their very veins, as enunciated by plumed fur and webbed paws. But plenty of Riverclan cats she knew didn't exactly enjoy rain, so it was probably something different. Well, until someone crashed into her. She could feel herself tumble into a sitting position as the other cat let out a cry. She took a second to orient herself again, shaking her head to make sure everything was in working order, before turning to the other apprentice who had begun a string of urgent apologies. Who was this...? Morningpaw wracked the names of her many, many clanmates before landing on an answer. "It's alright, Ringpaw, I'm okay. It was pretty stupid for me to be standing there in the first place. I was probably blocking the entire entrance." She offered, letting out an embarrased laugh. She really needed to start being more aware of her surroundings. "Trying to get out of the rain? It's pretty bad out there."

Ringpaw stopped her babble, catching herself. ugh, there I go again. Stupid, Ringpaw, stupid! she quickly regained her composure and gave the younger apprentice a soft, shy smile. "Yeah- the rain is pretty nasty..." she slipped past Morningpaw into the den, flicking water off of her whiskers, her small frame shivering. Licking herself down to get the droplets of cold water out of her pelt.

"Ah- look the rain stopped..." Ringpaw joined Morningpaw, sitting beside her at the entrance. "Leaf-bare is almost here... the most miserable season, for sure aha." catching herself, she shook her head. There goes her mouth again!
"I'm sorry for talking your ears off... I'm probably annoying or boring you..." The molly shuffled her small paws.

the queen paused, unsure of what to say in response to palebrooks questions. she wasn't even sure how to keep her own kits from wandering off. what would she say? just do the complete opposite of what she had done? she inhaled, "well," she began, "make sure they know the dangers of the territory, first of all. they should know that there are predators out there and it's simply no place for a kit to be." would that be enough? for palebrooks kits and even any possible future kits of her own?

daisybirds jaw clenched for a moment, letting out a hum. "and..maybe even get some of the elders to tell them some tales if it's necessary. there's nothing wrong with scaring them a little considering it'll be for their own safety." alright, moving onto the other question. "to keep them close..just love them, honestly. make sure that they know that you're a person that they can always count on."

Palebrook smiled. “It sounds like your used to keeping kits in check.” She thought about all of Daisybird’s advice. “But I don’t think I would want to scare my kits. That seems a bit extreme, right?” That might also make them rebel even more, but Palebrook didn’t add that. She wasn’t sure how Daisybird would take that.

Hm, it was a rather breezy day, and the russet colored she-cat just sat in the light, grasping all warmth that she could get. It was almost leaf-bare, as the other older clanners would say. There would be less food, and more cats would get ill. She frowned, curling up for heat. Leaf-bare sounded truly horrible, though a small part of Maplepaw was grateful she didn’t have to go through this as a kit.

The she-cat slowly started to drift to slumber, when she felt legs stumble over her body, and her eyes shot open. She looked around to see one of the older apprentices, Ringpaw, had tripped over her. Sitting up, she looked to the other she-cat, who had been worried for her and had offered her some water vole.”Yes, I’m fine. Not much happened to me. Oh, and no need, I already have eaten, so you should just keep your water vole, but thank you anyway!” She smiled sheepishly, though her stomach had been rumbling for some time. Leaf-bare and what little prey they were to have had been frightening her, and she would refuse to eat much.

As the light rain fizzled off, Morningpaw turned to her newfound companion. "I don't really mind leaf-bare, even if a lot of unfortunate things happen during it..." She murmured, thinking of the catastrophe that had been Sootstar's disappearance the previous winter, back when she'd been an new apprentice. She let out a dry laugh at the idea that all this mess had only started less than 10 moons ago... frankly, it felt like a lifetime. "Though, bad things seem to happen the entire year, anyways."

Her whiskers twitched curiously at Ringpaw's self-deprecation. "What do you mean? I'm always happy to chat, really. Don't worry about it." She smiled at the tortoiseshell, giving a friendly wave of her tail. Morningpaw really didn't have anything better to do with her training at it's end, so why not talk to some of her peers? She'd spent most of her apprenticeship fraternizing with warriors more than other apprentices, after all.

oh, yes. okay, she saw some flaws in the idea of scaring kits now that she was thinking about it. how embarrassing. "you'd be surprised..kits aren't very good listeners most of the time." daisybird said, "but yes, i can see how you'd think it's extreme. there are always other ways, like being stern or explaining to them how it could be dangerous."

lounging in the clearing, there was a tuxedo tom with three fat fish gathered at his paws. he chomped on all three fish at a time until there was nothing but bones and scales left - truly living up to his name, fishface. he pushed the bones aside, tongue swiping over his lips for any crumbs.

ah, what a delicacy. no other prey could ever live up to the watery, fishy taste of fish. he pitied the other clans..those poor, poor non fish eaters.

fishface rolled on his back, seemingly resistant to the freezing temperatures. his belly was full and he decided it would be nice to rest. he would not allow these cold winds ruin his day!
