She hadn't realized how long since her patrol set out. Too caught up in her search, time had slipped away from the spotted molly which resulted in a tardy return to camp. Curse my need to destroy my enemies! We were much to sluggish! After splitting up from the others, Featherflame dashed towards Pikestar's den. Her fur was still damp from the ocean's salty water's.
She nodded solemnly at Sunstone, knowing from her fellow warrior's sheepish tone that his patrol returned with the same results as everyone elses. "Excuse my lateness Brave Sunstone, time seemed to speed by quicker than I realized." A mix of disappointment, embarrassment and anger all mixed into a surprisingly quiet Featherflame, much different than the last time she was in the leader's den. Turning towards her leader, she prepared to tell the bad news with Sunstone.
The silver tabby hummed as they walked over to the leaders, den tail flicking as they called into the den, sitting outside of it, "Hello Pikestar, would I be able to speak with you?" Her large body fluffed up to keep out the cold.

Rainfern slowly crept in, trying not to make too much of a racket. “Pikestar? I-I’m just finishing a punishment by delivering this fish! I hope you enjoy it!”
Slatestripe whisked into Pikestar’s den at the invitation. This was the first time he’d been in the leader’s den since Pikestar had taken over the Clan. Not much seemed different from what he remembered, but to him that was likely a good thing. Change was good, but so was tradition. In his mind, a leader had to walk a fine balance between both. It was still too early in Pikestar’s leadership for the warrior to tell how he’d approach that particular topic.
“First, I’d like to report on the battle refresher I held a few days after Slatewhisker’s death,” he began, very matter-of-factly. “Everyone who participated did a wonderful job. I especially wish to compliment Bluebellpaw, for her fierce strike. We practiced defending against killing blows, using our environment to help us in a fight, and water combat.
“Second, I want to report that Autumnpaw is doing well in her training. I’ve been helping some of our other apprentices with swimming and hunting, and they are coming along just fine as well. This brings me to my first idea. I feel it would be beneficial for all warrior apprentices to receive basic first aid training as part of their regular training regimen. I believe this would help ease the pressure on Fawnpaw, since it would reduce the number of cats coming to her for trivial reasons. Further, we could also take this opportunity to educate apprentices on the dangers of certain herbs, like deathberries and water hemlock. Since Fawnpaw already has a lot on her, if we were to implement this idea we could have Marigoldleap handle the training. Or, they could do it together.”
He paused then, unsure if he should also voice his second idea at that point. He figured it would be best to let Pikestar think about one at a time. He hoped his approach was okay; he felt a little like a deputy or a shield in the way he was reporting, but that’s just what felt proper.
His ears twitched slightly as he watched the RiverClan warrior silently make his way into Pikestar’s den. For some reason, there was a feeling of uneasiness that stirred in the oriental’s gut, not from Slatestripe, but from something unseen. Perhaps it was jut the usual anxiety that haunted the dark-furred tomcat on a daily basis, but he did his best to choke it down and simply pay attention to the other tom’s words. First topic at paw today was his battle refresher that Slatestripe had been keen on hosting after Slatewhisker’s death. Right. He had nearly forgotten about that. All Pikestar could bring himself to do was nod and then watch the smaller cat explain what had happened at the event, paying attention to the way his mouth moved as he talked to try and ground himself from any lingering paranoia. The good news was that the battle practicing session was a success, everyone did well, especially Bluebellpaw. “Good! That’s good… Wonderful.” He meowed, avoiding looking Slatestripe in the eyes, “Thank you for that. You did RiverClan a grand service by hosting more training.” Stars above, why did Pikestar feel so damn off today? He couldn’t do this now. Not while talking to a clanmate. The clan leader needed to focus.
Shaking his head gently, the long-furred feline finally was able to brush away any lingering ill feelings. Which appeared to be just in time, considering how quickly Slatestripe moved onto the next topic in their conversation. Pikestar nodded casually to his words regarding Autumnpaw’s training, glad to hear his decision in pairing the two together seemed to be a right one. He was always thankful the warrior seemed to be keen on helping many of their apprentices, not just his own, which was nice. The oriental tomcat blinked at Slatestripe, humming lightly at his first idea. Basic first aid training to the majority of RiverClan? A fine idea. Although Pikestar didn’t really like how it was phrased regarding Fawnpaw herself. “I’m all for the idea.” He said, lifting a paw and licking it before drawing it over his face, “But I won’t approve it unless Fawnpaw herself is involved. If she wishes to have help from the other cats within RiverClan who have medical training, then she can collaborate with them—regardless, I want to speak with her about it before we go forward with anything. And that’s my final say on that matter.” Simple and unwavered, Pikestar wasn’t hesitant to show the trust he had in his little sister.

It didn't help that Silverpaw had never met her father, and the closest father figure she'd ever had was Flintfang. She shook her head softly. He asked her a question - "Is there anything else?" - and for some reason, tears flooded her eyes.
"In all honesty, sir, I'm scared. I'm afraid for my sister and brother, Reedwhisker and Flintfang. What if they go out and never come back, just like Stormpaw? They're all I have left. And I'm scared that whoever is killing apprentices is going to hurt me next. These past few moons have been so scary." She hiccuped, sniffled, and cried. She hadn't spoken to anyone about her feelings. She, on impulse, decided to hug her leader. Silverpaw knew he had been through so much, just as she. They both needed it, she felt.
Hearing the apprentice stumble over her words, the large dark-furred tomcat blinked at her for a few short moments, unsure of how to react to such a thing. She was obviously embarrassed by it, and did not mean to say it. Pikestar didn’t press Silverpaw about it, though it did make a softened smile come to his expression. Though, the moment didn’t last too long before the young molly started to cry and confess the fear deep down within her. At first, all the oriental tomcat could do was listen and show that he cared in doing so. She spoke of her older siblings: Flintfang and Reedwhisker. And Stormpaw. Silverpaw also told him that she was afraid of being taken next. They were all relatively understandable and valid fears to have in this age, when unsee dangers lurked silently within their own territory.
Then, without warning, Silverpaw hugged him, wrapping her smaller paws around his body. It made Pikestar stiffen, not out of uncomfortableness, but more so out of alarm. Ever since he had become leader of RiverClan and having lost his beloved Lynxfall, the oriental tomcat had lacked much of any physical affection like this…especially outside of funerals, which was rather sad the more he thought about it. With only a moment or two of hesitation, Pikestar lifted one of his paws and reciprocated the hug in his own way, wrapping one arm around Silverpaw and holding her close. “Reedwhisker and Flintfang are always gonna be here for you. They aren’t going anywhere.” He meowed, his voice soft and reassuring, “And don’t you worry about such a thing, okay? You’re gonna be just fine. Just remember what I told you and the other apprentices awhile back: never go out of camp without two clan warriors. Everyone in RiverClan, including myself, are here to keep you safe. Safety in numbers, Silverpaw. Everything is going to be just fine.” Little did the RiverClan tomcat know that soon enough, these words would mean nothing. He’d be a liar. Perhaps that was just a self-fulfilling prophecy.

With everything that he had to go over (and in general) he wasn't feeling very chatty and so the tabby tom was pleased he could go straight to the point. Allowing himself to sit down first, for he felt he'd be there a little bit, Gingerfrost decided to begin with the patrols; "All the patrols reported back in time, there's little important to signal: Reedwhisker did scent a ThunderClanner and one of our own rather close to the border, but no trespassing was involved. And Rainwhisper didn't appear to have completed the patrol."
While some weren't perfectly on time, he wasn't nit-picky - they reported back before sundown and that was what mattered. With that he paused for a moment before continuing to the next matter: "Littlepaw passed her assessment, she's a good swimmer. Fast."
He added in his usually muttery tone, recalling how she managed to avoid the chucks or soil and sticks quite well. It likely wouldn't be long before she got her name, then.
With those two out of the way, the ginger tabby could move on to the third and most present point that caused his surprisingly early visit; he left a few moments of silence of course, before continuing. He wouldn't be surprised if his voice got all raspy by the end of this, but with the cold weather fast approaching, he'd rather have it out there and done with. "I wanted to suggest we reinforce our camp's walls. With leafbare fast approaching and all the recent intrusions, we could only benefit from it and find any weak spots that may have made easy entries. We might also want to use surroundings to better hide our camp's entrance; make it less obvious to those who aren't from our clan."
Watching in silence as the ginger-furred tomcat entered his den, nodded to him and sat down, Pikestar allowed his full attention to go to the RiverClan shield, hoping there was finally some good news to make it’s way into the leader’s corner of camp. The first state of business was patrols, which reminded the long-furred oriental that he had asked Gingerfrost to take care of that. Right, right, right. It was somewhat a little… test that he had given to the young shield determine if what would occur in the near future would actually happen or not. With that being said, Pikestar leaned forward very slightly and listened intently to Gingerfrost’s report. All patrols reported back on time: Good. Reedwhisker had scented a RiverClan cat and a ThunderClan very close to the border, but there was no trespassing from either side: Interesting, but no cause for alarm. Rainwhisper also didn’t complete their patrol: Disappointing, but not surprising. “Do you think Rainwhisper should receive punishment?” He asked simply, tilting his head to the side. Pikestar was intrigued to see how he'd respond.
The conversation moved along smoothly, the next topic being young Littlepaw’s success in her warrior assessment. That made a warm smile come to Pikestar’s expression as Gingerfrost told him how she was an excellent swimmer. “How wonderful.” He meowed with a soft purr rumbling in his throat, “I’ve been looking forward to the day she’d become one of our newest warriors. I have no doubt you’ve been an amazing mentor.” Within the leader’s deep train of thoughts, he made a mental note. Littlepaw would be made a warrior during their next clanwide meeting. How exciting. She’d be the first apprentice he’d name a warrior. Pikestar had always loved witnessing ceremonies within RiverClan, but now he was the one preforming them. It will surely be a special occasion for everyone involved. With that, the topic would comfortably shift to camp wall reinforcements. The large tomcat nodded swiftly in agreement, remembering other cats mentioning similar ideas in the past. “That sounds like a grand idea. We should start having RiverClan prepare more for the colder moons before it’s too late.” He remarked, hoping that if they went ahead with this plan that it would lessen the rogue attacks and also make the clan feel more safe overall, “Would you be interested in taking the lead in such an endeavor? You could gather a bunch of willing warriors and apprentices together to strengthen the camp. I know many cats that’d be willing to lend a paw.” If Gingerfrost didn’t feel too comfortable in taking charge in such an event, Pikestar would understand, without a doubt, but was willing to let the younger tom lead with his idea.

As the clans drew closer and closer to leafbare, the air was getting colder and the dark-furred tomcat detested it. One would think that with a thick, fluffy pelt such as his, he would have no complaints, but Pikestar was a tad too sensitive to the chill in the wind these days. Ever since he had moved out of the warrior’s den and into a den of his own, there was no shared body heat to enjoy. Moons ago, the oriental tomcat hadn’t been worried about such a thing, having planned on Lynxfall sharing this space with him. But now, times had changed and plans were forgotten, leaving Pikestar to a cold, lonely den where he was desperately trying to build a nest that would be good enough to last through the cold season. It was such a tedious annoying task, but it was something important that needed to be done, of course.
Then, the familiar scent of Otterfluff drifted into his den, making him perk his long ears. Seconds later, the fluffy brown-furred tomcat called out his name, asking for permission to enter. “Yes, Otterfluff, you can come in.” Pikestar meowed, albeit hesitating slightly, “What’s happened?” The last few times the ex-shield had come to him, it had never been for anything really good, so the RiverClan leader was already expecting bad news. Which was not at the fault of Otterfluff, obviously. The other tomcat was probably just as sick of the drama and dreariness as he was. At least there wasn’t a body. A small sneeze slipped from Pikestar, making his whole body shudder uncomfortably.

A mix of disappointment, embarrassment and anger all mixed into a surprisingly quiet Featherflame, much different than the last time she was in the leader's den. Turning towards her leader, she prepared to tell the bad news with Sunstone.
Once the large golden-furred tomcat appeared at the mouth of his den, the dark-furred oriental could tell that it was not with good news, especially with how Sunstone’s words trailed off. Pikestar should’ve known better, but he was still visibly upset by this foreseen outcome. Featherflame appeared beside him soon afterwards, sharing the same expression of failure. “You didn’t find her.” The clan leader remarked bluntly, turning swiftly on his paws to face the two warriors, “Come in. Discuss what you need to discuss with me.” There was an evident bitterness in his tone, making no attempt to hide such irritability. He trusted them. He believed in them. They said they’d bring his sister home. And now they dare stand before him now? To tell Pikestar that Fawnpaw was still out there, all alone, probably wondering why nobody had found her yet. But the oriental tomcat was being unfair, wasn’t he? He just needed to be more understanding. More…something. So he’d hear them out. Pikestar would give them that much at this moment. If his short temper allowed them that.
When Pikestar's first response was merely a breathy exhale, she thought she'd screwed up big time, and it showed with the way her eyes flickered anxiously.
Then he continued, resting his tail on her shoulder, and she deflated with a sigh of her own. A rare smile, albeit wobbly, inched its way across her lips. "Thank you, friend. I... I'll be back, I promise." Her tone became a little more serious as she added, "Don't you dare go anywhere while I'm gone."
She stepped forward to press her forehead to his before pulling back again. "If you see Fawnpaw, please tell her where I've gone. I don't have time to find her and I want her to know I didn't leave without saying anything first."
“Don’t worry about that now,” Pikestar remarked gently, still smiling softly at his friend, “Your main focus should be on your mother.” If there was a chance that Bluebellcrackle were to never return to RiverClan, then he would surely understand, but hope, at the very least, that it was so that she could live with her family. Or any fate where she didn’t end up another friend that he had to see in StarClan sooner than he would have liked. A gentle purr would rumble in the large tomcat’s throat as the two of them would touch foreheads for a brief moment. “I don’t plan to.” He whispered, uttering a soft chuckle soon after, “Someone has to make sure RiverClan doesn’t fall apart.” Pikestar meant that light-heartedly, but truly did hope that he could keep his word to Bluebellcrackle. She deserved that from him, especially after she saw him at one of his lowest points. He’d always see this brave RiverClan warrior as his friend, as long as there were stars in the sky.
Once they pulled away, the oriental tomcat listened to her words regarding young Fawnpaw and he nodded. “I promise you that I will.” Pikestar said earnestly, whiskers twitching aimlessly, “She’ll probably be the first one to give you a big hug when you come back to us.” At the mention of Fawnpaw, however, he couldn’t help but think of Bluebellpaw. Had the shield warned her apprentice about all this? He felt partially at fault, but for what exactly, Pikestar didn’t know. But perhaps that was something the RiverClan leader would deal with at a later date. For now, Bluebellcrackle needed to focus on getting to her family, to be with her sick mother when she needed her most. One last sentiment from him would surely be fine, right? “Travel safely, my friend. Never forget that you are loved here in RiverClan.” The long-furred tom said with a warm smile, “I won’t say goodbye to you, but rather, I will see you later, hopefully in better circumstances.” He had come to hate saying goodbye, having said it far too many times in his life, so this would have to be good enough for them both.

Hearing the familiar voice of Fogcloud from outside, Pikestar turned his head towards the mouth of his den. “Of course, come in.” He meowed back, allowing the shield to enter with a curious tilt of his head, “What brings you to me today, hm? No more bad news, I’d hope.” RiverClan had enough bad luck lately since they had lost Skystar, and the large dark-furred tomcat was hoping things were finally starting to turn around for them. Thankfully, it would seem by the tone and lack of urgency in silver tabby’s movements that it was nothing life-threatening to which brought her to him on this cold day of leaf-fall. Pikestar could only hope that it would stay that way, but regardless, the tall oriental longhair was prepared to be faced with anything. He needed to be, especially during these difficult times.

Upon hearing Echoblue’s voice, the tall dark-furred tomcat stretched out his front paws and lifted himself into a sitting position. “Of course, come in.” He would answer her simply, “Though I ask that you await for my permission before entering my den.” His tone was gentle, not threatening nor angry, just a soft reminder to be respectful of his privacy. Pikestar was a lonely soul in this space, but that didn’t mean just anyone could waltz into his den. But unlike Beastgrowl had, Echoblue didn't come across to the oriental as belittling or self-righteous.

He stirred gently once the molly spoke briefly, something about bringing him a fish…punishment? Oh… must be something Gingerfrost or Slatestripe was responsible for. Hm. The half-asleep clan leader murmured a tiresome hum of acknowledgement and thanks before slipping back into a comfortable sleep once more. He’d enjoy the fish once he was finished with his tiny nap, surely.

She remained silent, listening to Pikestar ( @canineantics ) as he spoke about the territorial expansion. Land out near Lionsbeach seemed to be a little out of the way and perhaps even a little difficult to traverse for apprentices, but it would certainly provide protection for RiverClan if they ever needed to evacuate in case of an emergency. The warrior hummed thoughtfully at this. It would certainly help the entire Clan.
"Lionsbeach is near a cliff. It could be a little dangerous for apprentices if they aren't careful, but land up there would provide plenty of protection for RiverClan if an emergency were to happen," she commented. "Perhaps we could try checking it out in Greenleaf."
Quite frankly, the brown warrior was glad to hear Pikestar wouldn't try to go out as far as Skystar had when he was looking to expand the territory. The one good decision Skystar made was appointing Pikestar as deputy. "To be honest, I don't think anyone would have liked to walk so far just to get to another part of our territory," she chuckled, attempting to lighten her leader's mood.
Her brows furrowed when she finally heard Pikestar's response to how he was. Alive? That simply means he needs a lot of help and the Clan hasn't been very graceful in that aspect. And, like the dark gray tom had said, he was trying his best to see the Clan through all its trials and tribulations. "That's all we can do," she murmured. She kept quiet after her short statement, listening to her leader as he went on to explain how he felt. But what Pikestar said was not what Reedwhisker had expected.
"Peace within the ranks?" at first, she wanted to make sure she heard correctly, but she soon realized that what he had requested of her was what a shield did. Although she wanted to ask more questions, Reedwhisker figured he'd explain it during the next Clan meeting and get her answers then. "Of course. Yes, I'll help in any way I can."
There seemed to be a lot of peace between everyone at the moment, but Hollowstorm was one she'd have to keep an eye out for because he seemed to get arguments started between warriors. Other than that, everyone was relatively peaceful... aside from the small scuffles apprentices and kits had on occasion. Safe and happy. Got it.
"You can count on me, Pikestar," the she-cat gave a firm nod. "Is there anything else you needed help with?"
“It is dangerous.” Pikestar agreed almost immediately, nodding his head, “Which makes it all the more important to teach our apprentices how to traverse the terrain safely in order to avoid any future tragedies.” Regardless, the tall RiverClan leader shared Reedwhisker’s thoughts on the subject, knowing it could be a prime opportunity to see to in the future. Although, the molly was right. It would be much safer to check out together in the warmer seasons after leafbare had finished. Without question though, such ventures wouldn’t be discussed further until much later. RiverClan had enough to worry about right now, especially since Wormbite planned on utilizing the tunnels again. He hummed in response to Reedwhisker’s light comment regarding Skystar’s plan for territory all those moons ago. “Indeed.” Pikestar meowed, his gaze dropping to his paws for a moment, “I do wonder sometimes what would have happened if we had all seen through that journey though.” He didn’t regret his decision regardless, not one bit. It was a safe choice on his part to turn back when they did, especially when the golden leader turned tail. At least, that’s what Pikestar would’ve liked to believe. Perhaps that was foolish thinking.
Unsurprisingly, Reedwhisker seemed unhappy by his response to her question regarding his well-being. But frankly, the large tomcat didn’t know how else to answer that kind of thing these days. His rank was much more stress than he could have ever prepared for. Looking back upon it though, he felt like he should’ve seen it coming though. The important thing though was that Pikestar was still standing and would (hopefully) remain that way for a very long while. He didn’t plan on dying any time soon and leaving RiverClan behind, but life was full of surprises, so he did what he could with what he had. “Everything will be fine, Reedwhisker.” Pikestar said softly, trying to reassure the warrior, “We’re just going through a rough patch right now, but as long as we all stick together, then I think we’ll see past these dark days.” It felt almost hypocritical to say such positive words, considering how cruel and cold he often thought towards himself. But if the long-furred feline could make a single clanmate feel better with such things, then he would surely do so to show that he did truly care.
“Yes.” The oriental tomcat answered her simply, but then waved a paw in the air dismissively, “But promise me to not let that sentiment go to your head too much. I just don’t want us to get to a point where our own warriors are at each other’s throats.” Pikestar, beforehand, had not realized that it had come off as a rank promotion rather than just a simple gesture. He just didn’t want any needless arguing. It shouldn’t be something that only the clan leader and his shields should be responsible for. Every cat in RiverClan should strive to maintain peace among their own, shouldn’t they? Stars above, maybe he needed to work more on how he worded certain things. He returned her nod, allowing a gentle smile to occupy his maw for a short moment or two. “Good. Thank you, Reedwhisker.” Pikestar said, soon shaking his head to her next question, “No, I believe that’s all we need to discuss for now. If you don’t mind, I would like some time alone with my thoughts.” Long conversations exhausted him, so he flicked his tail towards the den entrance, silently dismissing the RiverClan warrior.

@canineantics
“Absolutely, Echoblue.” The tall dark-furred tomcat responded, allowing a warm smile to become his expression, “Congratulations on your kittens, I’m sure they’ll all become wonderful members of RiverClan. Feel free to move into the nursery and find a nest that suits you.” Pikestar would admit that he was a little nervous, considering how close they were to leafbare. The cold season was especially harsh to young kittens, but the oriental wouldn’t dare let that get him down. After all, there were many cats within RiverClan that he had witnessed being born last leafbare and they were still here. Cloudpaw was the first to come to mind. “If you need anything, don’t hesitate to seek out Marigoldleap. We will make sure you and your little ones are well taken care of, I promise you that.” Pikestar hoped she believed him.
Slatestripe was pleased that Pikestar was willing to consider his idea. “I understand wanting to talk it over with Fawnpaw first. Thank you for considering it.” He gave a quick dip of his head, then decided to breach the topic of his second idea. He could sense some uneasiness within the leader, but that was to be expected he supposed. A lot had happened in RiverClan lately, and Pikestar was still a new leader. It was understandable that it would take time for the oriental to adjust.
Before he could get out the second thing he’d come to talk over with Pikestar, something occurred to him. “Do you often think about all the leaders that have walked before you? Slept and ruled in this den?” He hoped he wasn’t overstepping his boundaries by asking. It was something he often thought about himself, when sleeping in the warriors’ den. “We have all our tales of cats whose time in RiverClan ended long ago. Yet, we have no physical representations of them. Any outsider who walked into this den, or any den, would be forgiven for thinking the living are the first to inhabit them.”
( @canineantics Quick OOC note- at the time Slate suggested this, I was unaware that birdie already had a first aid event planned. Just wanted to be sure I clarified that Slate isn’t trying to steal that event from Fawn /lh )

She sighed softly, thinking of the time the Clan was under Skystar's rule. If they had all seen through that journey, we would probably have a lot of territory. she answered to herself, not feeling it was right to discuss the deceased leader further. Everything will be fine. Pikestar's voice echoed in her mind and her breathing eased. He's right... there are shields and sensible warriors, it should be an easy job.
"I promise, Pikestar," she nodded. "These dark days can't last forever."
Reedwhisker wasn't sure if she was reassuring herself or her leader, but she didn't really care. They probably both needed it anyway. Either way, the Clan was growing tired of all this upset and sorrow. Pikestar depends on all his Clanmates, just as we depend on him to live in the forest. I can't let him down, so I'll have to keep myself in check.
"I enjoyed our talk," she purred and prepared to leave as the tom gave his tail a flick of dismissal. "Let me know if you need anything more, I'll be happy to help. Get some rest..." she murmured the last few words, not wanting to seem like she was ordering her leader around. Dipping her head, the young she-cat padded out of the den, leaving Pikestar alone to think about whatever it was he was thinking about.
