looked like his luck had finally run out, stumbling over nothing but his own paws, he caught one of the reptiles with a lot less expertise than the last few rounds, and made two more attempts at catching another one before giving up and admitting defeat. not to anyone besides himself of course, they remainder of cats belonging to his group, or stars above, one of the other groups who were not yet back from their own hunting endeavours, probably having to do with him not having to walk a lot between the failures, given he was already at the clearing where they would gather ultimately and thereby sparing him from a bit of embarassment. instead of standing around and doing nothing he too to silently pacing back forth, cutting throught the clearing a different angles each time, rookfire guarded the prey left behind by the other cats in his group until their eventual arrival and keept the crows at bay. where as the cawing had grown slightly louder between the first one he noticed and the present time, none of the birds had made a move on the prey yet and the pacing appeared to work well at keeping it like that for a while. cool grey eyes flicking upwards and towards the crows lingering around the crowns of the trees every once in a while, he internally cursed them for ruining his last chance at catching something before gathering his group and reuniting with the other two.
against the crows better judgement, or so rookfire liked to believe at least, the bird shuffled around on the branch it had been sitting on, cawing as if it tried to make rookfire fear its wrath, before fluttering dark shiny feathered wings and gliding down to the ground. the equally dark furred medicine cat bounded over to swat at the crow at the same time that the second crow repeated the first ones behaviour, landing at the other end of the clearing and scratching at the loose soil covering one pile of prey and oh stars why him. why why why him alone, why three stars damned crows at once. he wasnt too convinced birds were able to think thoughts more complex than "hungry, food good" or something but these crows were pushing him closer and closer to believing these air rats had decided to purposefully make him run back and forth in order to defend the prey, always swinging themselves back into flight right before he was able to reach them, strike one down and eliminate a part of the threat. so he remained hurrying back and forth for a while, it probably felt longer than it actually was, until one of the crows finally got too side tracked trying to dig up prey and he approached quickly, keeping paw steps light even as he hurried along the moist soil towards the crow, counting out strides and ultimately taking a leap at the flutter thing. if he were to catch the bird he would move onto the next one by pretending to be busy with this one until another crow decided they were in the clear.

Turns out, those tiny feathered prey were no match for Silentpaw. Flexing his claws, he made his way through the greenery again, silent as a... Hm. Feather. Yes. (His roleplayer isn't good at similes) His eyes narrowed as a strong scent hit him. A bitter scent of frog. Alright. Time to take care of these ones.
Silentpaw dropped into a half-crouch and maneuvered through the lush greenery, moving quicker. It... Should be easier to catch these slimy things, right?
Finally, with outstretched claws, he lept at the frogs.

Nothing. Damn it. Shrewstep had been hoping to snag another frog, but they mud sent him skidding down the slop and half into the wet puddle. The frogs, predictably, fled, and he was left prey-less. Well, not totally preyless. He had five things to collect actually, and he decided now was probably the time to do that. The two frogs he had left nearby were easy enough to find, as were the mice under the beech leaves. The squirrel took a bit more effort, and he was still snuffling about in the leaves as everyone else finished hunting with actual success.

Three robins! Aha! Great!
Hmmm.
That's a lot to carry...
Maybe she can carry one more thing.
Burnetpaw searches once again, finding a vole again.
Sure, why not.
She bunches up her muscles and aims to pounce at the rodent.

Irispaw is surprised to have caught this many again.
How many does he have now...
Seven?
Is it even possible to carry that much?
He's not sure if he should catch something else, or worry about figuring out how to carry all that.
After thinking for a moment, he decided one more piece couldn't hurt.
So, the grey apprentice searches, and eventually scents a toad.
Ew.
But, whatever, he'd try.
He stalked toward it and aimed to pounce.

Ugh.
Okay.
No mouse.
Bloomingblaze sighs, before searching once again for something else.
After another little while, she scents a shrew.
Alright.
The tom pounced forward, hoping that this time his well practised technique wouldn't fall through. Thankfully, this time is didn't. Claws met with the rodent's body, before he grasped it in his jaws. 6 wasn't bad at all. It was more than he could carry by himself. He carried the mouse back to where he'd buried the others, placing it in a small hole nearby as he silently thanked it for its life. Seemed like they were still going. This might be one of the longest hunting trips he'd ever been on.
Before he even tried to find something else, the scent of rat reached his nose and he crouched low - another one of those things. Scurrying through the trees, it stopped for a brief second where he could see it. Now. He lunged forward.
following his success with the last two crows and the third one making the phenomenal decision to fly away in fear, rookfire decided their event had been going on for long enough, which was confirmed with a glance to the sky, peeking through the thick dark green canopy in sparing spots but showing the path of the sun clearly enough for him to make his assumptions. it had been a good amount of time, longer than the typical hunting patrol should take by almost twice or even thrice in length and hopefully more than enough time to catch a good amount of prey to ensure everyone was ready for the harder moons of the season cycle. mistlewhisker would welcome the return of his patrol with open paws if she was sensible.
he dragged his two crows towards the spot where he had sparingly covered his lizard with a bit of soil and cleared his throat in preparation, brushing soil from the lizards body absentmindedly. "eherm,, SHADOWCLAN! wrap up, we are heading back. everyone stay in groups, briarsplash and sleepysunrise will lead you back to camp, i'll stay behind to make sure no one gets lost." he yowled, hopefully loud enough to carry over to even the other groups, but cats had good ears, and it only really took one cat to ensure a whole group heard.
beginning to go around and dig up the hidden prey of his own group, rookfire made an attempt to gather it all more or less in one place to make sorting and carrying it back home easier. they'd have to either walk twice or just make sure everyone helped and since rookfire didnt really feel like freezing his paws off it would have to be the second option. "everyone take as much as you can carry, im not making two trips" the medicine cat apprentice added once some cats started to filter in, nodding towards the small pile of prey he had managed to dig up and stack in the time between calling for retreat and now before returning to shuffling back and forth between loose soil and the spot he had determined to be their impromptu prey pile.

Silentpaw snapped his head up at Rookfire's loud voice, rising from his crouch. He looked from the frogs - or where they used to be, since they'd hopped away, startled - to the prey he'd caught. He walked over and picked up as much as he could, taking the birds' wings into his mouth so the rest of the body hung out of his jaws, limp. He couldn't carry all the prey he'd caught, but it was something, right?
He slowly trotted towards camp, each step careful as he didn't want to drop anything.
