Minnowsplash was deep in thought (no doubt hissing at themselves) as they followed the bobbing white tail in front of their face. The cold water in their fur made them sluggish and sleepier than normal. When Duststorm suddenly stopped by the riverbed, Minnowsplash failed to react in time. They accidentally head butted the she-cat from behind, sending the other cat forwards. As the consequences of their action unfolded in front of their eyes, Minnowsplash gaped in horror.

Duststorm paused at the glimpse of a plump fish. Then, suddenly- SUASJH!. Her nose-, filled with water, and her open mouth was flooded. It was cold. She instinctively gasped in surprised fright, only to take in more liquid.

What had happened? What was happening? Her mind couldn't gather itself as she was swept, thrown, twisting and turning along a churning current.

A calmness enveloped her as she gazed at all that passed her, and the sun... it must have poked through the clouds. It glistened down through the rushing surface. If she had been in the wrong position her shadow would have scared away the fish.. There was the throbbing, muted sound of roaring water, accompanied by a chilling numbness. She calmly realized she was drowning.

It was quiet. Almost... peaceful? At least... she'd be where she belonged. To the the water of that raging river.

Minnowsplash yowled and lept after their clanmate. All those years of half-drowning was finally going to pay off. Swimming frantically, they grabbed at Duststorm’s thick scruff, which was fortunately easy enough to find because of her thick fur. With a giant burst of energy, they hauled her head above the water, letting her reclaim her breath. “Swim!” Minnowsplash snarled at Duststorm. “Move your fish-brained legs and swim, you giant heavy loaf of fur!” No cat was going to drown under their watch. Not today.

Spouts and torrents of water escaped her jaws, amongst a shouting of words she heard "swim". Kicking her legs she felt her fur stop the water from touching her skin, her second coat, her gift from birth. She paddled, she bonded with the water, asking it to life her above.

She glanced over as she flailed rythmically. Minnowsplash was there behind, holding her.

It was an accident. She purred, almost chuckling at a time like this.

Minnowsplash swam by Duststorm’s side until the both of them reached the shore. When they clambered out onto the rocks, Duststorm began purring and smiling crazily. What was wrong with this cat? Was she going to suggest cuddling again? Shaking their head, Minnowsplash sighed. Perhaps making some friends wouldn’t be so bad after all. They looked back towards the river, half-frightened and half in awe of what they’d just escaped. The water burbled back quietly, and Minnowsplash could feel their thoughts drifting off down the paths of what-ifs.

Duststorm purred, "thank you. Eehg!" She coughed, throwing up water from her lungs. Shaking out her fur she purred louder, rubbing against Minnowsplash, her heart still pounding. She nuzzled his face.
"Thank you, thank you."

A drowsy Minnowsplash was suddenly jerked out of their thoughts by the pile of fur pressing up against their side. Although they normally would have shooed her away, they could tell that she was freezing and needed a fellow cat’s warmth. And so, against Minnowsplash’s wishes, they allowed her to rub against them. Despite their original wariness, Minnowsplash had grown a bit closer to Duststorm. They gently nudged her to her feet. “Come on now,” they mewed. “You feel like a piece of ice. Let’s get you back to camp. You need to get checked by a medicine cat.” With a bit of difficulty, they picked up the two pieces of fish from earlier and waited for Duststorm’s reply.

She nodded, still purring. "I'm more worried about you though."
Duststorm flicked her tail, gesturing for Minnowsplash to follow with a smile, worry sparkling in her face. "Let's get back then."

“You? A downer?” Heroneye said, a bit surprised. “Don’t say that. This whole time, you’ve been telling me how everything is going to get better.”

Owltalon’s words really did confound Heroneye. Perhaps she’s trying to convince herself just as much as me, she reflected with a flick of her tail.

“In any case, don’t mind me. I just tend to get a bit...antsy this time of year. Knowing that the well-being of one’s Clan is more or less out of one’s paws... It can be a bit difficult for me, that’s all.”

As the trio raced out of camp and branched off from the initial fox hunt party, Cherryswirl called back to Fadingsun,

"Fading! Lead the way to where you last found the fox scent, or saw it. It may still be there." Short. To the point. Chances of it being in that area was high - even more so if it was closer to the den that their clanmates were on their way to. She simply slowed as she waited for Fading to take the lead, calling back to Starlingflight this time,

"Feeling ready to take on a fox today? Keep extra vigilant!"
