Heroneye watched as Softpaw once again attempted the jump. Good; she was making progress. With just a few more tries, she would surely clear the stump. Doubtless overcoming such an obstacle would serve as a sort of confidence booster.

"Again," Heroneye implored, taking a single pawstep forward. She wasn't sure if there was any advice left to give; her form was improving now, and it seemed to Heroneye as mostly a matter of patience and practice.

Although, Heroneye would prefer not to see her apprentice hit her head again. "Remember to keep your paws between your face and your target. It's worse to take a hard hit to one's head than just about any other part of one's body."

Softpaw nodded gently to her mentors words, green hues narrowing in concentration as she adjusted her paws the same way she did on her second try, forepaws tucked in, tail out behind her, hind legs ready to leap, Softpaw decided to try something different, gently leaning backwards, Softpaw jumped, it took more strength, but sure enough, when Softpaw felt her forepaw's hit the top of the trunk. With a bit of cute scrambiling and a gentle murmur to herself, Softpaw sat on top of the trunk, Her eyes joyful though a bit self-conscious, did she do well? She probably looked like a fool........

Heroneye watched as the apprentice scrambled onto the tree trunk with an approving nod. Not exactly the prettiest leap, but it got the job done. And it served the most vital function of showing improvement; if one continued to improve, then one would surely come to a desirable conclusion, eventually.

"Now that you can make it up the tree," Heroneye began, "We may move on. Naturally, though, you would have to continue practicing and training for a real battle."

After a pause, Heroneye would continue: "The third and final move we'll be learning is the back kick." After having given it some thought, she figured it would be advantageous for the apprentice to learn this move. She had mentioned, after all, feeling comfortable with putting her weight on her front paws, and that was essentially the entire premise of the move.

"In this move, one rears onto one's front paws before delivering a powerful kick toward one's opponent, who would be positioned behind one. The key to this move is being able to detect their presence and movement, even while being turned away."

Softpaw gave a purr, leaping down from the trunk. Leaping down from the trunk was much easier than leaping up, that's for sure. Softpaw listened to her mentor, backkick? Huh? Softpaw gave a wonky purr, "'I-i guess I can try," Softpaw mewed, "It sounds like a lot and simple at the same time." Softpaw mewed gently, "you have to balance on your forepaws, which if your kicking out you put 3 quarters or almost all of your hind weight on your forepaws, so that's gonna be tricky not to topple onto my face." Softpaw murmured, half to herself half to her mentor, "You have to balance a long with holding the weight..." Softpaw mewed, eyes rounded once more as she crouched, "You have to see them behind you..... or get a good idea of them and there movement..." Softpaw mewed, then directed her question to her mentor by looking at her, "So, would this move be most effective with a cat that's about to swipe or crash down on you? Because there on there hind paws mainly so they'd go... kinda flying no?" Softpaw asked, her eyes rounded in curiosity. Softpaw continued to adjust herself as her mentor answered. Softpaw lifted her hind legs once, stretching one out and then the other. After streching she leaned one hind leg backwards, kicking outwards and lightly hitting the stump, although from her paw hitting the stump, she toppled over and rolled. "Dang it"

"This attack could be used on any cat trying to come up behind one," Heroneye replied to the apprentice's question with a wave of her tail. "Though a cat on their hind paws would, of course, be especially vulnerable to such a move."

The move was meant as a way to turn the tides of battle if one's opponent manages to slip behind oneself and put one in a more vulnerable position. Such was the essence of battle: adaptability and flexibility.

Heroneye watched as Softpaw attempted the kick. "Don't let your focus leave your balance for a moment, including once you've already completed the kick," Heroneye explained. "Even if your attack isn't as strong as a result. Your opponent would take advantage of any stumble or sign of weakness."

Softpaw listened to her mentor, nodding as she thought about what to do next. Perhaps.... putting her paws out a bit in front of her would work instead. Softpaw crouched, her paws going a tiny bit in front of her as she balanced on them, kicking upwards. It wasn't a straight kick, but this time she didn't fall.

Softpaw looked at her mentor, purring gently at the approving tone. "With more power..." Softpaw murmured, crouching once again, she attempt the kick, her muscles flexing gently, the apprentice had been working out little by little ever sense her horrible attempt at swimming, her muscles becoming lean and begining to show day by day. Softpaw tried the move, stumbling over and catching herself, she attempt the move once m[ore with no words, only focus, as she kicked upwards she decided to put more ass into it, literally and figuratively, she used her rump to help kick her leg a bit higher and harder into the air, after words flinging herself over and landing on her paws which would then make her face the enemy. "Was.... that good?"

"That was fine," said Heroneye. Softpaw's execution still wasn't perfect, but with some practice, it could still easily improve. But since Softpaw had learned three moves as Heroneye had intended, it was time to move on to the final stage of the lesson: sparring.

She moved back toward the clearing, away from the stump. "We'll be practicing sparring now. In isolation, these moves are useless; being able to use one's best judgment and actually executing them in battle is what actually counts. You don't have to be perfect. Just show that you've made reasonable improvements." What exactly defined "reasonable improvements" was, admittedly, somewhat vague, even in Heroneye's mind. But if she saw that her apprentice could hold her own decently well, that would have to do for now, until Softpaw could have more time to practice.

"When you're ready, try to imagine that I'm an opponent from another Clan and attack me accordingly." Heroneye crouched into a kind of defensive position, as though she was herself preparing for battle. "Claws sheathed, of course."

Softpaw's eyes widened as she realized she'd be fighting her mentor. "O-ok" She murmured, padding to the other side, she readied herself, standing for a moment, and then crouching. All of a sudden, Softpaw's rounded eyes narrowed to slits of coal, focused and even a bit angry? Softpaw stalked forward a few step, baring her teeth to her mentor as if she was a real enemy. Softpaw stalked from side to side, before attempting to scoot towards her mentor, her paw flashing out, if her blow landed, she would smack her mentors leg harshly, claws sheathed. If not, then she would miss and leap back swiftly in hopes of not getting hit.
