Covepaw padded into the apprentices den, he had that look on his face that if somebody said the wrong thing, they were gonna have a muzzle full of clawmarks.
Well.. he always had that look on his face.
But this time it was rightfully so.
Covepaw had woken up at the crack of dawn and padded right out of camp, and from the looks of his bruised form, he did some pretty serious practice. Probably against a tree.

Yars glanced up at the sound of approaching pawsteps, doing a double take when she saw Covepaw’s expression. She scrunched up her face in a scowl, ears flattened. What was his problem? “You look like a badger tried to help you with grooming.” She jeered with a roll of her eyes. It was far too early to look that danged happy. And in this context, happy didn’t mean happy.

"And you'll look a lot worse if you don't shut that muzzle of yourself you fluffy mouse-brain." He snapped back, giving her one of his famous glares that sent even warriors shivering. Like those eyes had seen horrors from something darker than they would speak of.

Uh, what was that? Yars narrowed her eyes at her denmate. Was he trying to intimidate her? Please! Mimic’s glares were just like this. And having two enforcers for fathers this was nothing. Dawnstar’s pointed glare was a lot more intimidating than this. What made his glare different though, was that she could see there was something behind it.
Mimicpaw’s glares were toxic to most others, but he was just…grumpy. He just seemed to hate everything. Except their dads. This cat at least seemed like he had a reason to be so grouchy. But that was none of her concern. Yars may be small, but she refused to be spoken to in that way. “What was that?” She challenged, ears flattening against her head as her fur began to rise and bristle. “You wanna try that again badger-breath?”
She wasn’t really trying to pick a fight. Despite what it…definitely looked like. Her first comment about his appearance, believe it or not, was Yarrowpaw’s way of sort of…asking if he was okay. Sorta. But now? In her eyes he had spat on her kindness, and therefore wasn’t worth it. So if he wanted to pick a fight, she wouldn’t back down from it. She couldn’t back down. If she started to give ground now, she’d always been seen as weak. She was small, like Mimic. She had to be tough to make sure she wasn’t left behind or forgotten. She had to become the strongest, and that meant she had to be feared.
This apprentice was clearly used to that glare of his working, so a rebuttal after that might be enough for him to back down. Part of her hoped it was, she didn’t want to get into trouble with Dawnstar over this upstart. Lips pulled back in a hiss and tail lashing angrily, this hope didn’t reflect anywhere on her expression.

Since leaving Mama's den, things had been colder and lonelier. Scorpionpaw had taken residence in a nest closest to her favorite sibling and some could say she strays into their nest here and there. Poor Houndpaw had to endure his sister's affection! Oh nooo! ..?? It was mostly a comfort thing; they were still babies after all. Tonight, Scorp would be pestering her sibling, prodding him gently and whispering his name with every poke.
When he'd eventually wake, she'd wave her tail, amber eyes glistening in the dark den. "I needa... y'know..." Scorp hated admitting her nighttime trips to the dirtplace. "....you knoowww...." Her paw tapped on the ground impatiently. "Just come with me. I don't wanna go through the clearing by myself," Scorp would finally request, praying to the stars that Houndpaw would accept.
── .✦ ➜ Despite Houndpaw's defiance against leaving Home, after a moon he had adjusted surprisingly well. He slept with his moss nest completely covering his body, finding comfort within the shadow and subtle compression against his bones. It was a relief, but he had to figure out a way to make his nest heavier. Maybe flaying.
The apprentice was currently out like a light, his limbs twitching slightly but noticeably. Hoonk snooze. Mimimimi.. A dream of chasing after rabbit swarmed in his mind. It took about two pokes for the apprentice to begin to stir but even then, Houndpaw stayed stubbornly in his sleep; a light growl rolling from his lips in between dog-like snores.
The third poke had his golden eyes fluttering open to the darkness, someone calling his name. "Ww..ha?" He mumbled, letting out a big dramatic tongue-rolling-out-of-his-mouth yawn and stretching his large limbs as much as he could from underneath the mossy abyss. "Mmr....gh..ssmeep.." He insisted.
Houndpaw only poked his head out to gaze curiously into the darkness, blinking slowly with a sleepy haze. Wut?? Wuz even goin on? He listened to his sister speak, taking an incredibly long time to realize he was awake now. He had been woken up. His sister had woken him up. "Oh hai sisss-sssy, " He mewed quietly, tail swishing gently. A slow frogblink at her and a stretch of silence. Then came a short nod of his head, and then remembered she might not be able to see within the darkness nd added on a, "Okeey......letzz gooo!"
Houndpaw stood up, letting his nest slide off his back and he started to waddle towards the entrance. To be frank, he seemed still half-asleep but the apprentice was a brother on a mission! Not without struggles of course, because his general inability to figure how to place one paw in front of another led to him stepping on a few nests. And maybe a tail. Or paw. He didn't really know. Perhaps this could've been avoided if he kept his eyes open super wide.
Eventually, he escaped out of the den but not without bumping his shoulder against the doorway and mumbling a muffled apology to it. And then realizing it was not a someone. Wait, what were they even up to? He was incredibly up for nightly adventures, always, but he enjoyed having context. With a shrug, Houndpaw waited for his sister to appear in the moonlight.

While sleep wanted to drag her back into the depths of her nest, she wasn't as out of it as her sibling was. She'd let out soft giggles as she watched him bump into the den wall before she'd push her way out, a little more gracefully. "Silly Hound, thanks for coming with," Scorp would give him an affectionate bump on the shoulder with her head before moving across the clearing.
Once her business was done, she was ready to lead them back to the den when some noises caught her attention. "What's that," she'd whisper to Houndpaw, ears swiveling to pick up the noise again. It was faint at first. She thought she had imagined it, but then after a few more moments, the noise returned. This time it seemed to carry an echo, like there was many of them: AWWOOOO
Amber eyes widening with awe at the sound, Scorp would nudge Houndpaw eagerly. "Do you hear that?! What is that?! I've never heard that before!" Scorp would try to pry his mind, but she wasn't sure if he'd even have much of an answer for it. If they knew what a coyote was, they definitely didn't know this was the noise they made at night. How would they have learned without hearing it? Dawnstar didn't seem to be the type of parent -- or cat -- to mimic noises to teach her kits things. She was a logical Mama, she didn't baby them.
The howling picked up again and Scorp would stand to her full height, a grin crossing her lips as she listened. "It's kinda pretty..." the words were carried away gently on the wind. She almost wanted to mimic the noise, but she didn't want to look absolutely ridiculous in front of Houndpaw! Or at night when someone would eat their ears, but if Houndpaw was going to try to mimic the noise, then she would absolutely be right behind him and support the nonesense.
