Generally speaking, Mudclaw didn't really do anything 'bad.'
Tallstar, out of the blue, demoted him with only a couple ThunderClan cats and Onewhisker as witnesses. Mudclaw had been a decent deputy of WindClan. He may have been overly aggressive at times but the Clans have always been rivals in the books - unless circumstances are dire they really shouldn't be buddy buddy all the time. Tallstar had good intentions with demoting him but should have done so to Mudclaw's face and explained why. He left him in the dark at a time it was the worse possible thing to do.
I don't agree with how he went about his rebellion, and I'm guessing his alliance with Hawkfrost was solely to get more cats on his side, but I can't fault him for seeing Onewhisker's leadership as an attempted coup. It was an unfair lack of communication under shady circumstances.

He was in a one-sided relationship with a narcissist who was obsessed with him, had been showing signs of being disinterested since the beginning of Mapleshade's book, and told Mapleshade to keep the kits away from the river the same day they drowned.
She blatantly ignored his warning, put her kits in a position to be killed (he saved her AND tried to save their kids!!!), and then blamed him for not being all warm and cuddly toward her.
The only thing he did wrong was not officially break up with her sooner/cheating on her. He shouldn't have shifted into a relationship with Reedshine without cutting ties with Mapleshade completely.

Appledusk is fine
But mudclaw?
Like...
he would of caused death between the clans, and Hawkfrost knew it. He wasn't AS stupid as Brambleclaw and Hawkfrost is ovi. evil

Re: What cats should have gone to the Darkforest but didn't?
There isn't much to back that up other than Tallstar's speculations lol @Daisy the Icewing
Mudclaw was aggressive but seemed like he did it with his Clan's best interest in mind. He likely would have been similar to Blackstar leadership wise. Onestar became aggressive to prove himself to his Clan, which in turn resulted in more conflict with ThunderClan to show he wasn't besties with them.

I super agree about Mudclaw. He wasn't evil.Sure he was pretty dumb to start a civil war suddenly like that but anyone would have done the same if 2 cats from other clans and a close friend of the leader said that he can't be leader anymore anyone would go nuts.I don't agree so much about appledusk and mapleshade. They both had problems that went waaaay out of reach that they could have solved in a few pages.
