Though he’s caught plenty of fleas, ticks, and beetles. This apprentice was never going to become a warrior not as far as he was concerned. He wanted to drop Logpaw off at the twoleg place and run off, he’d be a good kittypet, not a clan cat. Some cats even born into clan life- aren’t suited for it, and as far as Beespirit was concerned, Logpaw wasn’t suited for clan life.
Logpaw blinked,” Well- Beespirit gets mad at me for being twelve moons old and unable to hunt anything besides, fleas, ticks, beetles, and sticks.” He meowed,” But I think it’s progress.” He added sheepishly, What is Shinefang thinking, when is Shinefang going to put a red berry in a piece of prey and ask me to eat it. He wondered assuming Beespirit was taking him here to assess whether he’s worthy to killed or not,” Beespirit doesn’t agree. Fighting for me is throwing sticks at my battle partner and keeping my distance. Though, the only thing I can do correctly would be climbing trees. He’s good with that, just mad I can’t hunt in the trees.” He meowed wondering when Shinefang would kill him once more,” Quit nice talking me. I know your going to feed me a red berry that kills me.” He meowed knowing that those ones killed him, unaware it was called a deathberry.

At the sound of Beespirit's snort, Shinefang didn't care to contain his dislike of the mentor's open detestation for his apprentice. The medicine cat had likely trained more apprentices up to be warriors than Beespirit had seen winters and if he didn't care to hide his dislike, why should he? Shinefang flicked his tail, aiming a small swat at the warriors face in a silent warning to be quiet while he did his evaluation.
At the apprentices accusation that Shinefang was going to poison him of all things, he cocked his head and shot a glance back at Beespirit. Had something the mentor said given Logpaw that impression? Had the warrior threatened him? As much as he didn't find himself thinking too highly of the warrior at this moment, he found himself doubting that any warrior in his Skyclan would say such a thing. He turned back to Logpaw, and asked him in a soft and calm voice, "Why would you think I'd do something like that? We're clanmates."

Shinefang lowered himself to the floor of the medicine den, just beside an empty nest. "Off you go now, nice and easy," he said, letting the apprentice know that she should get settled. As she was climbing off of him, he mentally walked through the steps of how to treat her leg. He would have to set it first, he knew. He'd seen cats get treated for broken limbs before. He knew that part would hurt. A lot.
Just then, he saw another tom walking in and cursed under his breath. "Mousedung, another patient," he griped. And to think, whne he left his life as a warrior, he thought being a medicine cat would be less work. Then the tome entered and he got a more clear look. It was Coldwind. Steampaw's father. Double mousedung! A parent. Even worse! He could practically hear the whining already. Help my daughter, Shinefang! She's hurting Shinefang! Are you sure you should be doing this and that, Shinefang? As if he weren't already in a bad mood. "She broke it. My first clue was that legs don't generally bend that way," Shinefang said, answering the father's question before the daughter could. With the apprentice off of him, he went to the corner of the den where he kept sticks, recently stripped of bark, courtesy of Gorsepaw. He grabbed three in his teeth, and padded over to lay them next to the apprentice. "I'm going to have to reset her leg. It's going to be painful but it has to be done if she ever wants to use that leg again," he said bluntly to both cats before disappearing again to his herb wall to grab a packet of poppy seeds.

Beespirit jerked his head back avoiding the tail, but getting the message Shinefang, that is the right idea, feeding this fool deathberries or I can simply escort him to the twoleg place. Either will work with this fool.
Logpaw blinked,” Because I’m twelve moons and can’t hunt actual prey. I have no cat friends. I fight by climbing a tree and throwing twigs and bark at my enemy. I’m never going to be a warrior, I’m an extra mouth to feed. Kits get fed because they will become warriors and apprentices who hunt, queens have been hunting warriors as have elders. Me, I’m an apprentice taking food in leafbare when prey is precious and not contrabuting to the pile. Why not get me out of the clan. Beespirit suggests often that I become a kittypet- where I won’t have to be another mouth to feed.” He added.

Streampaw settled down, starring at her father who had walked in. "I was trying to catch a squirrel and I lost my balance and fell on my leg." She meowed to Coldwind. The apprentice looked at Shinefang, ready for any pain that came through her leg, so that it would get fixed. She didn't want to never walk again, so she stayed calm and let the medicine cat do his job.

"You should have been more carefull." Coldwind said bluntly. The gray Tom didn't sit down, wanting to be able to move if Shinefang needed more room.He wasn't that interested in the medicine den, even though he had only been here once or twice. 'Still no mentor.'
"Wasn't your mentor there? Why didn't they stop you from falling?" Coldwind asked after a few heartbeats, wanting to get an answer to the question so he could determine if this was there fault or not.If it was,he would be sure they knew it was,and that they learned to watch there apprintices better.

Shinefang set the packet of poppy seeds on the ground near the apprentice, still wrapped so that she wouldn't think she was meant to eat them. "Before I give you any poppy seeds, I'm going to have to feel your leg to see just where and how it's broken. Where it hurts is going to tell me a lot about that, so I can't have you numbed up just yet." Shinefang padded around to the other side of the younger cat, and very carefully laid his paw on the leg. It was beginning to swell. He would need to work quickly. As he felt along the leg, he found the break. It was a bad one, right on the long bone. The good news was of all the breaks she could have gotten, this was the one he knew the most about treating.
"Coldwind, if you're gonna hover around, you may as well help me out with this. Open that leaf packet and give her four poppy seeds. Exactly four! I need her pain numbed, not a passed out apprentice. Then get two of those sticks over here to where I am. The third one if for her to bite down on." With instructions issued, Shinefang padded toward his den entrance to gather the other things he would need for Stingpaw's leg. Comfrey of course, and Cobwebs. Big, thick ones.

Shinefang had no way of knowing what was going on in Beespirit's head, but listening to Logpaw, he had no doubt he could guess what had come out of his mouth in the last six moons. The apprentice clearly knew that he wasn't hunting and fighting the way a clan cat normally would at his age. He couldn't say that he was a lost cause though. To Shinefang, a cat of Skyclan was valuable regardless of what they could do. That's what clan life was all about. Still, leafbare was here prey was scarce. Not only that, but the apprentice seemed unhappy for sure. "Well, what do you think about becoming a kittypet?" he asked Logpaw.

I'd love to be a mother and have lots of little warriors running around at my paws...but for now, I'd better make sure I keep all my paws... The apprentice thought, smirking.
The brown tabby padded over to the pile and picked up a stick from the very top. She started ripping at the bark with her claws, trying to make little openings, then peeled the rest off with her teeth.

(Brief time skip)
The next morning, Shinefang choked down his morning willowbark, then stiffly hobbled over to Gorsepaw in her nest. He gave her a rough shove with his paw to wake he. "Time to check your tail," he muttered bluntly. Shinefang was at his grumpiest in the mornings. It took time for the willowbark to ease the pain in his joints, and the colder it got, the worse the pain was in the morning. Outside his den, he could see the sparkle of frost coating the clearing floor. He groaned. This would be a bad pain day.

Gorsepaw blinked open her eyes, realising she had fallen asleep on the floor last night. The apprentice was a little startled when the old Tom shoved her with her creaking paw. " Oh...right." She sat up, sleepily. It was healing pretty well. It had closed up nicely and would probably start to scab or scar soon. Then maybe GorsePaw could leave.

Grunting with the effort of walking, Shinefang moved toward the apprentice's stump tail and pulled the webs off, slowly. Instantly, he got a face full of the scent of a wound. It was covered by scabs, which was good, but it was still an infection risk and would be for some time. "Well the good news is, it's healing well. The bad news is I've smelled foxdung that smelled nicer." The tom began walking toward his herb shelf to fetch some new webs, but he only got a few steps before the pain in his legs was too much, and he had to stop. He grunted as he lowered himself to the ground to lie on the cold medicine den floor. "Gorsepaw, do me a favor and grab one of my poppy seed packets? They're on the bottom shelf there, he said, pointing with his tail. The beech leaves." Willowbark was not going to cut it today.
