roachflare had been getting antsy, like something bad would happen, old scars itching like a thousand bugs were feasting on burning skin.. wrong wrong wrong. three steps forward. bug looked out for his patrolmates, newtbelly, silentpaw. nine letters, three cats, his name didnt fit into the lineup.
they almost wandered into silentpaw, too caught up staring blindly at the other cats in the clearing, but recognised before their furs had touched. roach flinched, fire flashing in his sight briefly. "ah.. o-only one mis-missing huh?" they tried a smile that only dropped once their eyes flickered up to newtbelly. stars was he blind?
"d-didnt see you there..b-big guy" they chuckled awkwardly, ears twitching.
rookfire sauntered along sleepysunrise, just a couple of steps behind and only surpassing her when the medicine cat found her place in the centre of camp. his striped tail ran along her shoulder in quiet reassurance, not blind to the wobbly steps she had taken. it was nice to have someone...sort of. at least sleepysunrise didnt hate him, at least him fearing she might kill him one day was a nicer thought than not knowing why mistlewhisker and hawkbite still disliked him. sleepy had some screws loose but death was more merciful than burning stares and clipped tones.
he gave the medic a small nod as she listed his patrolmates, magpiecove and mushroompaw, requested by yours truly and delivered by his partner in crime.. chervil and marigold were nice as well. he hadnt gotten any input on herbs, why should he anyway? it'd been months since he'd seen the inside of the medicine den for more than a couple of moments, and even moreso since he had been in there not reeking of blood.
the other patrols were assigned swiftly, all following the pattern he and sleepy had discussed. pleasant. all good groups, there shouldnt be any mishaps. but well, one never knew at the end of the day. he'd keep an eye on silentpaw specifically, having heard of his recent mishap. the tom didnt sit right with rook.. why? he couldnt say.
magpiecoves split pelt stood out as easily as it always had and the older warrior happily chose a spot next to her, tail flicking. "still the same overconfident walking headache or have you cooled off yet?" rookfires voice was quiet and even, almost friendly, the words.. well, you can see for yourself.

Magpiecove
She, Her\Warrior\20 moons\Shadowclan
"I want blood, guts, and angel cake. I'm gonna puke it anyway."
Magpiecove had been thinking. Hard. About what? Ha, none of your business. Just because you get a birds eye view on the story doesn't mean Magpiecove will spill her guts out. Boo, she wasn't stupid, contrary to popular belief. She was about as calculated as her ego would allow. FINALLY, Rookfire showed up. She'd waited at least TWO MINUTES. Know how long that is in Magpiecove time? Might as well be two hours. Blasphemy!!!
At his question, Magpiecove turned her head and smiled wickedly, but her grin didn't reach her eyes. It was probably more unsettling than her usual stretched smiles had ever been. Whilst every revealing flash of teeth was lined with malice regardless of her intent, her smiles always made her eyes squint or glitter with a spark of mischievousness.
Not this time though.
Wide caramel hues didn't abstract with the puff of her cheeks nor the pull of teeth. "Oh Rookie, sweet old rookie." She shook her head pityingly. "What is life if not an overconfident walking headache? I'm here to entertain myself as much as everycat here. Putting my show face on, tryin' to focus." Magpiecove turned away and made a face, something odd looking, squaring her shoulders and puffing her chest.
"Oh, what the heck? I'll let you in on the plot: feathers. Lots of them. For yourrrrsssss truly!" Whoever that was, Magpiecove wouldn't tell. She had the free reign to be weird. If she would be to die tomorrow, at least she'd know that she was stupid freaking awesome.
"Hello! Magpiecove and Rookfire!" The young apprentice bounded her way to her patrol mates, it had taken longer than anticipated to get Dovekit off of her tail so that she could take part of the patrol but she was here and wasn't too late- hopefully. "Sorry I took so long! Dovekit was trying to come along with me and I had to explain that she still had her 'kit name so she had to stay here and then she pushed back-" The apprentice cut off her rambling with a waved paw. "Well anyways! I'm so excited this is my first patrol!"
DarkPaw didn’t flinch, didn’t blink, didn’t move a whisker as SleepySunrise unleashed her barrage. He stood still, chin slightly dipped, tail still, eyes trained somewhere over her shoulder — not out of disrespect, but like he was weathering his storm. Quiet. Focused. But his ears, those flicked once.
When she landed on him, her words sharper than thorns, something behind his eyes tensed. Placeholders. LateKit. He didn’t crack a smile. Didn’t defend himself. He wasn’t going to. Not here. When she finally giggled, he let the silence linger before he finally, calmly, spoke. “…Understood.” His voice was quiet but not small. A steady, dispassionate acceptance.
Maybe next time I’ll bring your entire ego in with the herbs. That’d be enough to restock the entire den. That thought almost brought a grin to his face. Almost. He kept walking. Luckily he didn’t even smirk.

Okay- last day as LateKit. Last day as a failure. He wanted to do something nice. Something to show he was still responsible and he would account for his actions. He had went around camp that morning, collecting the bits of moss that were scattered, growing in camp.
“SleepySunrise…” he dipped his head respectfully, setting the moss before her. “I have waited and thought on my actions- or lack of action -during my demotion. I apologize for my tardiness and with to reclaim my rank. I’ve also collected moss if you need extra- I can…uhm…re-do the elders or queens bedding if you’d like…or…something.” at the end, his gaze drifted to his paws. His expression was pretty neutral, but there was a glint of an apology in his gaze.

Ohh, right. She almost forgot about him! Her good-for-nothing aid, Sleepysunrise regarded him from atop her den's entrance. Right, right... She was supposed to give him his rank back, and he had even gathered a little gift. A shame the medic didn't quite feel like being nice today, even more of a shame that she couldn't keep him demoted on a mere whim. She thought Latekit was quite a funny name for an old cat like him. She pouted as the information flickered across her mind, and she propped her head up on the back of her maw. At least he seemed to have taken this punishment more seriously than some of his peers. "No... I'll take that moss." She could use some fresh moss. "It's a shame,,, Maybe I should rename you to Latepaw permanently." Her voice was so dead-pan it was difficult to tell whether she was joking or not. She paused for dramatic effect. "Don't be late again, Darkpaw."
