while rookfire was distracted with his own catch, he had payed little attention to the other cats that had accompanied them before he returned to where he had split from sleepysunrise. he must admit he was curious about magpiepaws performance primarily, springburst wasnt a cat he particularly cared about in any capacity so she was mostly a nice addition to their little trip. without knowing he was being outperformed by a loud mouthed apprentice of all cats, rookfires ear twitched, awaiting the younger enforcers feedback while his stomach twisted quietly. hunting wasnt really his sort of thing but the need to be better than everyone else was present as ever, especially if he was supposed to be the best of the group, spar sleepysunrise. it wasnt really relevant that springburst had been a lionheart while he was still an apprentice now, he was the clan elite and he would do well.
slight disappointment and shame, invisible on the neutral expression (further obstrued by the prey he was still holding), spread through his body as the youngest enforcer first complimented the apprentice, whom he still thought less than nice thoughts about, before turning to criticise himself and springburst. as soon as the smaller dark furred cat ordered for a repeat, rookfire quietly placed his first catch by her paws and turned to stalk through the night once more.
rookfire ignored magpiepaw (and her smug grin, curse that child) and springburst expertly, focussing on his own thing and
[ rolled 20 ] avoided making any noise as he moved through the dead of night this time. even as clouds moved to cover the sparse light of the moon, the young enforcer kept his ear and eye forward, almost straining his focus, and moved a lot more quietly than last time. the first scent he picked up was that of bird and although he wasnt much of a fan of hunting birds, it would do just fine for now, especially if birds saw worse at night. did birds see better during the day? come to think of it, he rarely ever saw birds out at night so maybe they preferred day for that reason..
a slight shake of his head, removing irrelevant thoughts from his head as rookfire pushed closer, cool hues quickly coming to focus on the small winged animal picking at the ground by a tree and took a more active approach now. focussing primarily on his sight rather than his smell now that he could see.

he inhaled deeply, flexing the muscles in his hind legs before pushing off. this time, the enforcers canines found the small animals throat quickly and without much struggle. a bit more satisfied with this catch, he shook out his pelt and returned to sleepysunrise.
