the trout and the little stream

A gray tom with brown stripes walked into camp with a fish in his mouth. His bright green eyes trailed around the clearing at all the cats sun bathing. It was a nice day thought Troutstream. It definitely was a perfect day, perfect for swimming and hunting. His gaze shifted to the nursery and thought he better go give it to one of the queens. Troutstream padded over to the nursery, sticking his head in he called out. "Anyone hungry?"

The light brown tom had been talking to his mother. About all the things he wanted to do, all of which he mentioned wanting to help out or be productive. Fawnkit was usually one to try and do good and try and help out. He felt useless if he couldn’t do something, sitting in camp waiting for the day his apprentice ceremony came.

He perked up a bit when a warrior entered the nursery. Troutstream! He shot up out of his nest and then bounded over to the older cat, smiling.

”I am! But mama’s more hungry, I think, so give it to her!”

Fawnkit said, using a paw to point to Littlestream. He was, in fact, very hungry, but he wanted his mom to eat before him. He loved her and wanted her to stay well-fed.

"Fawnkit, I just ate!" she mewed. "Wait... Who are you talking to?" She looked up, seeing Troutstream. "Troutstream!" she mewed cheerfully. "Hello dear!" She got up and padded over to the tom. "How are you?"

Troutstream purred at Fawnkit. He set the fish down before crouching down to eye level with Fawnkit. "You know you need to eat so you can become big and strong!" he purred, he then looked up at the sound of Littlestream. "Good morning, Littlestream. I am doing quite well. How about you and Fawnkit?" He purred standing up. "I also brought a fish, thought someone might be hungry." He said with a smile.

He shuffled his paws in embarrassment when his mother told him she just ate. Right- he’d forgotten about that. He smiled at Troutstream when he told him he’d get big and strong if he ate. The warrior had a point! He would get bigger and stronger if he ate enough!

Fawnkit looked at the fish Troutstream put down and glanced at the older tom and at his mom for permission to eat it. Wait, they were still talking. Whatever. He took the fish in his jaws and walked over to the nest, putting it down beside him and eating a piece as he watched Littlestream and Troutstream interact.

"Have you eaten today?" she asked Troutstream before seeing Fawnkit pad off with the fish. "Don't eat that entire thing sweetie. You're little, you'll get a bellyache."

Troutstream purred as he watched Fawnkit pull the fish over to a small clearing. His gaze then shifted back to Littlestream with a smile. "Yes, I have." he purred. "Thank you for asking."

Fawnkit

Fawnkit felt a bit cross with his mother for calling him little. He was five moons old! He wasn’t little! And he didn’t understand why eating a fish by himself would give him a stomachache… But if his mom wanted him to only eat a bit, he’d do just that. He didn’t want to waste Berryshine’s herbs on a dumb bellyache that he could avoid.

He tore off a piece and then pushed the rest away from himself, eating on the bit that he’d taken for himself. He wondered if Troutstream would wanna play with him? Maybe he could play with Troutstream AND Littlestream! Yay! He felt very proud of himself for that idea, happily munching on the fish.

Troutstream's gaze shifted back to Fawnkit, who was eating the fish. He let out a purr as he watched the young kit. "Your mama is right, don't eat too much. You'll get a bellyache and then how are you supposed to help your mama out?"
