Heroneye
| she/her | RiverClan | Lionheart |

[ Heroneye rolled a one out of ten. ]

Heroneye should have been expecting the attack (it made a kind of sense that the front paw blow would come first), but she was unable to react properly. By the time she began her attempt at a dodge, Soaringpaw was there, and she'd caught the full force of the attack. She let out a hiss and immediately regretted it. Hissing in battle wasn't particularly noteworthy, but this wasn't a real battle. It felt too serious, like she was genuinely becoming frustrated. Of course, she shouldn't be upset; Soaringpaw landing attacks was supposed to be the exact outcome she'd been working towards. This wasn't about Heroneye.

[ Heroneye rolled a seven out of ten. ]

No matter, though. Heroneye regained her concentration just as Soaringpaw was gearing up to get out another attack. She saw the apprentice come up beside her and attempt to leap onto her back. Heroneye felt Soaringpaw's paws for a heartbeat as she dodged away, those paws not managing to get a grip in time.

Seeing as Soaringpaw may have lost her balance after that, Heroneye would rebound towards the apprentice and aim a blow at her side, trying to knock her over (not too harshly, she hoped).

In a strange way, sparring was almost harder than a real battle. In a real battle, Heroneye would know exactly how much strength or effort to put into her attacks: all of it. Here, though, the line was a little more obscured. Obviously this wasn't a real battle, and the last thing she would want would be to actually hurt an apprentice. At the same time, though, she wouldn't want to go too easy on the apprentice and give her a false sense of security, or at least give the impression that Heroneye was patronizing her. Hopefully, she was doing this right...

Soaringpaw didn't actually expect the blow from her paw to hit Heroneye that well. The hiss that came out wasn't too expected, but it wasn't that surprising either. The apprentice assumes this is a glimpse of what to expect in a real battle. Either way, she'll probably be hearing way more hissing in an actual battlefield. But when the older she regained her concentration in time, she knew her plan won't work. How did the distraction hit but the main attack didn't? Just barely. Just barely. She could've landed the move had she been faster. She could've

[Rolled 7 / 10]
Heroneye's prediction ended up being right. The dodging had her paws land back onto the ground rather unprepared. This was when Soaringpaw realized Heroneye would most likely use this as a moment to get the upper footing and counter her in someway. The moment she landed she used her paws to push herself away from where Heroneye stood, while trying to fling a small bit of dirt at her to hopefully buy some time..wherever the dirt hit. The blow itself did manage to hit Soaringpaw, though she didn't fully lose her balance yet. She got lucky this time, it seems. But really, she'd rather get lucky during a real fight than training.

Heroneye's head jerked out of the way of the dirt Soaringpaw had thrown at her. It hit, but hadn't managed to obscure her vision as the apprentice had likely hoped. Soaringpaw had, however, managed to maintain her balance through Heroneye's hit. Good, she supposed; in a real battle if Soaringpaw had completely lost her balance after that, the fight would be over, more or less.

In other words, she was holding her ground well, but Heroneye would have to be relentless if she were to emulate the energy of a real battle, and be of any use. Perhaps it would be appropriate to use one of the more complicated moves she'd taught that day, she reflected briefly, already bracing herself to act. Maybe Soaringpaw would be more equipped to react, then, but perhaps it would make a good "teaching moment"?

She would attempt to use the half-turn belly rake, sliding towards the apprentice and aiming at her chest, just as she'd instructed before. Though the move could be difficult to pull off, it usually had the advantage of being unexpected--though she suspected she likely wouldn't have that in this context.

[Rolled 4]

As soon as Soaringpaw saw Heroneye slide towards he, she knew what was going to come. And she could've dodged; she could've. So now the question was how did it still managed to hit past of her chest?? While the move didn't hit Soaringpaw right in the center, it was still a scare to have been hit with a move she was specifically trained just a few moments ago. Embarrassing. Incompetent? Was every other apprentice like this when they first started out, or was it just her? When would she start catching up to other cats her age? Patience and all, but she knew she shouldn't take too long. As soon as the attack landed, she instinctively took a step back as she tried to think what could counter it; anything that could get her an upper hand here. Something that wouldn't make her look like a fool. Such a small mistake could end up with here face with the death she's feared. No. She couldn’t let it happen again. If she loses in a spar, then how would she expect to win a battle? But she can't let herself get too reckless. Fighting is a complicated thing

Since Heroneye did the Half-turn belly rake, even a fast cat would still need a second or two to get back on their feet. Right..? It'd be kind of terrifying if a cat could simply get up faster than lightning. So..she should take advantage of that, right? As Soaringpaw tried to rebound as quick as possible, she tried to give another chance for the leap and hold, thinking that even a skilled fighter wouldn't be able to get back on their feet without the process of getting up first. Her main idea was still to knock Heroneye down. She'll give it a chance one last time. She..may be just slightly obsessed with finding whatever advantage she can cling onto..but that should be a good thing, right? She should at least try to.
