things were different now. miss lostspark was gone. cloverpaw was still in denial, her mind trying to think of ways that her mentor could have survived, even though deep down she knew it was hopeless. last meeting, miss dawnstar assigned her a new mentor. all cloverpaw could think to do was complete her training as fast as possible, and then she could make her former mentor proud.

the half-blind tabby melded with the shadows, her pelt becoming one with the darkness as she stalked over to the warriors den before re-emerging to make herself seen again. her green eyes glanced around, trying to spot her mentor. once she spotted them, the scarred apprentice stalked over to them, prodding them. "training. battle. clearing." that would be all cloverpaw said. once she had spoken, she made her way out of the warriors den and into the clearing, sitting down as she waited for her mentor to show up.

Hoohhhhhh boy.

Moonstep was always happy to train an apprentice; no doubt about that. But with this case, he couldn’t help but feel nervous.

He didn’t know much about this cat; other than the fact they had lost their old apprentice, and were also half-blind. Would he be the right cat to guide them? Moonstep didn’t know.

…Either way, at least they seemed up for it. Moonstep couldn’t help but gently smile as Cloverpaw spoke their few words before leaving. A determined one, clearly.

The black feline yawns, stretching his legs as he stands up and follows suit. Moonstep sits just ahead of Cloverpaw once prompted to do so.
“Alright. You clearly want this to be done quick,” the feline speaks, his voice calming yet just as charming. Everything he said had a good form of confidence. “I get that, though. My name is Moonstep, and I’m your new mentor. Can you tell me what you already know?”

He tilts his head curiously, ear twitching.

The scarred tabby glared at his new mentor, lips curling into a snarl. cloverpaw didn't like them. why? they weren't miss lostspark. "territory," the tabby replied bluntly. she stood up and lashed her long tail, green eyes fixated on his mentor. "teach me. now." normally, he would have been chattery and happy, but not now. not since miss lostspark was gone. she was gone. he should have been there! "everything."

Everything. What, on the spot? Moonstep lightly frowns once more, not knowing how he should handle this situation. He can imagine that he wouldn't exactly be in this cat's favor.

"That'll be difficult, considering the ongoing lockdown..." Moonstep looks towards the forest, thinking to himself before continuing. "Why don't we go over some fighting techniques? You've got a fighter in you; I can tell."

This is Moonstep attempting to make the situation more lighthearted. He was never all that serious of a person- making him stand out a bit amidst many of the Riverclan warriors. For better and for worse.

cloverpaw's green eyes glanced over to the entry at the mention of the lockdown - she was never going out there again. not after the strange creature and miss lostspark. the molly glanced back over at her mentor as they began speaking again. fighting, yes. that would be perfect. she could fight off any more of those winged beasts that she came across again, and defend her clan. the brown tabby nodded, her face portraying no emotion. different for sure from what she used to be. cloverpaw backed up, giving her mentor space to display any battle move they may need. "teach." they told him, green hues fixated on her mentor. he closed his bad eye, hopefully that would help to not mess anything up. hopefully.

Moonstep nods - though, he can’t help but worry. What if this grief was to impact this young apprentice, forever? Don’t get him wrong; the close death would obviously have an influence on her life, but had she not once been a happy feline? Is it prone to being ripped away forever?

More close ones will die. It’s inevitable. Cloverpaw just needs time.

“For now, we’re going to go over some basic techniques- though, we should go over some general information first.” Moonstep stands up, slowly pacing around the area as he continues. “There are many different ways of dealing with an opponent- however, you overall want to keep their weak spots in mind.”

Moonstep pauses, sitting back down as he gestures to various portions of his own body.
“Have you ever felt oddly defensive with another cat nearing your stomach? That’s instinct; your belly is a weak spot- it’s like your core. The throat can be another deadly strike to a cats form, as a lack of ability to breathe is a lack of ability to continue fighting… or living.” Moonstep’s expression goes blank, his eyes locking down to the dirt below him momentarily.
“Just about anywhere on a cat’s face is also given; but especially the eyes.”
Moonstep places his paw back down, tail curling around his body again.
“Enough damage to these spots can be fatal, but you should remember that, according to the Warrior Code, you should only ever kill another if necessary. If they’re clearly too hurt to continue, let them go - unless that’s a continued threat to you or someone else’s life.”

“Got that?”
