She sat some ways back still, laying her tail neatly around her. She wanted her clanmates with more serious issues to be seen before her, still confident she didn't have any serious need of medical attention, but she wasn't a medicine cat so what did she really know? She had never been so close to a fire before.

Besides, she knew that she'd have her ears clawed by Bouncepaw and her parents verbally if she went back to the nest that evening coughing without having seen Lightningstorm.

Before Rabbitpaw could react, the medicine cat was entering her den, directing herself to the herbal storage. She'd been able to bring out a few herbs prior to the patrols arriving, but hearing Daffodilpaw's weak cough had made her realize that maybe strong, rare herbs would not be required for every single patient. In fact, if it hadn't been for the fact that it might be better to be safe than sorry, she would have sent the apprentice to go rest without another word. Her cough was to be expected after the fire, but there seemed to be no damage to the lungs. A soothing drink of water and honey would be all that was necessary to calm that coughing while her breathing evened out naturally after a good rest.

Exiting her underground lair with a sopping ball of moss in her maw, the sweetness of the honey tickled her tongue as she placed it before the pale apprentice, licking her whiskers as she washed away the pleasant flavor. "You seem to be doing better than most, love. Normally I would take care of the others first, but I want you gone and resting. The sooner the better. Have a drink of this first, though. Some honey water will be good to give you a little strength and ease your throat. And even better, it tastes bloody good, dunnit? Of course, I could give you some dandelion to chew on instead, but this is much better for what ails ya... and much tastier. Go on then, drink up. And off to your nest for a good sleep afterwards."

| Due to the lack of form on this post, I am assuming this is a mere check up because she is - understandably - coughing after the smoke inhalation but with no real issues sprouting from it, so I'm having Lightningstorm give her something to soothe her throat and give her a bit of a pep before she goes for a rest. There is no need to respond to this, as she is considered treated, so no worries! |

Rabbitpaw
He/him | WC Medicine Cat Apprentice| Moons: 12 | Part Manx cat

After the whole... thing that died but didn't die, and that the fires were confirmed to be put out... he was used to getting a check up and then having time to rest and catch up with his friends and family and make sure that they were okay. At least, that's how it went after the Riverclan battle, but it was different now. He was the one doing the check ups. Well, actually that was a strong way of putting it because he really wasn't doing much of anything besides carrying around what he's told to carry around and watching as Miss Lightningstorm saw to each of their incoming patients. Not that Rabbitpaw minded, he didn't know even a fraction that he should if he wanted to help so this was the best time to get some practical on the job learning.

Which led him to watch over Miss Lightingstorm's shoulder as she addressed an apprentice... Daffodilpaw, if his memory was serving him correctly. Luckily, the younger feline wasn't sporting anything too terribly bad, at least, no burns, and she was coughing a bit but it wasn't like Crowtooth's... though maybe using Crowtooth, who had long term breathing issues was a bad frame of reference. He flicked an ear, carefully leaning in to glance at the honey water as his mentor mentioned it... honey soothes throats... that sounds like something he should've known but now he does for sure... oh! And dandelion, could theoretically do the same? Though it was bitter. He remembered his mentor's note that most cats preferred to avoid eating bitter herbs, and that also made sense to him.

"Honey water? That's different than how you've treated Crowtooth's breathing issues in the past... you would give them a sort of berry right? Or am I misremembering, I think I remember you giving some to... umm," Rabbitpaw blanked on the apprentice's name but continued, "Ah, I'm forgetting his name... Oh! Orangepaw, I believe." The warrior wasn't Rabbitpaw's favorite, not after one of their interactions but that wasn't a very necessary part of this conversation. "Also, didn't you say that dandelion helped infections? How does it help breathing? Can it do anything else as well?" Though maybe next time he should keep his questions more limited, they did have injured cats so they couldn't be standing around and answering all of Rabbitpaw's many many questions.

"Sorry for being distracting..."

All in the very slow blink of her watery, irritated eyes was the deputy suddenly looking her over. She was fine- at least to her knowledge. Her paws felt a bit puffy and were burning. Oh and he lungs- if felt as she inhaled the smoke it curled around her lungs and had been squeezing and restricting them. That was exhausting the warrior. So smoke—definitely smoke. She shook her head to the deputy as he instructed to indicate so.

Hopefully she didn’t look…too bad? But she probably did. She had little white ashes covering her pelt which was even dirtier thanks to the smoke (yes- the smoke just hates her). Her head was hung low, craning towards the ground as if her dry throat had been waiting for water to simply spawn. Yes- yes she was thirsty. Perhaps that would help her feel better? The more she waited, the hazier her own thoughts became.

She was grateful for the deputy’s assistance to get her to the healing area, honestly if she tried she would’ve collapsed in the first few steps. The smoke was really irritating, she just wanted it out her lungs. Gone, gone GONE. She believed it was the smoke causing her to feel some pit in her stomach. It sucked. She did her best to give the deputy a grateful look and muster a nod before lying her head on the ground weakly.

Oh no- what if DewFawn saw her? In this state? He’d never let her live it down! But there wasn’t much she could do, unless she could take it like a champ and hold her head high and confidently…which she doubted was in her current list of abilities.

Satisfied with Daffodilpaw's condition, Lightningstorm began sorting through her herbs, Duckfeather's condition instantly taking center focus. While Hawkfur's leg was looking painful, those with difficulty breathing were taking her attention ever so slightly more. She couldn't help herself. Experience dictated that a breathing problem could turn deadly in an instant. The painful burns looked far more menacing, but smoke inhalation could have permanent consequences that an inexperienced cat would be unable to treat. Thankfully - or due to unfortunate prior events, depends on how one saw it - the medicine cat had plenty of experience when it came to cases like these, a matter than her apprentice brought up now as she looked for the perfect treatment for the injured - judging by her general, stiff stance - she-cat.

"Mmm? Oh. Been paying attention, haven't you? You are correct, juniper berries are all the rage when it comes to treating severe cases of lung scarring or issues brought upon by smoke inhalation... or other matters? I've had patients with breathing problems before that weren't smoke related, but the juniper berries seemed to work just fine as well. Those are good for multiple things, not just breathing. They work wonders for the stomach as well. My guess is that they relax the insides, sort of... like how chamomile soothes the mind? Although... getting ahead of myself there, aren't I? That's a lesson for another day," she purred in amusement as she found the feverfew and juniper berry she had been looking for.

"Coughing isn't always dire enough to need juniper berries, though. In fact, sometimes the juniper berry won't do a damn thing for your patient, and you are out a herb that is only available during a very specific season. Daffodilpaw's coughing sounded lighter. Less a dry, heaving cough and more so an irritated throat. She probably inhaled enough smoke to cause her some discomfort but nowhere near enough to damage her lungs. In that case, you want honey. Honey is good for a fair couple of things, a lot of them involving any kind of coughing that originates from the throat. It's also pretty good for energy, which is ace considering the coughing can do a number on you and leave you tired. Takes care of two things in one go there, then, dunnit? No more coughing, and you get a bit of a second wind!

It ain't without downside, though,"
she added as she padded towards Duckfeather, dropping a feverfew and a juniper berry in front of her, taking note of some excessive salivating that came from overheating before padding back swiftly for her honey water and offering that as well. "Here you go, love. Drink this. It's nice and sweet and will alleviate that throat of yours. After that I want you to eat this flower and berry while I check on you for any injuries and make sure those aren't causing you trouble no more."

"Where was I? Oh... yeah... The honey water!" Lightningstorm mewed, picking up her conversation with Rabbitpaw as she patiently waited for the molly to drink the honeyed water from the moss and eat the herbs she had brought along to help with her breathing and evidently overheated body. Thank the stars for Larkthroat's guidance on those feverfew. Who would have thought her latest fascination was even more useful than she had first thought?

"While honey is good for those coughing, ignoring how difficult it is to obtain for some cats, it's just thick, innit? Too thick to go down easily on someone who can barely breath due to how much coughing they are doing. So I mix it with water. I'm assuming the first cat to figure that out was trying to fix some crystalized honey in their stores without realizing what a good idea they'd had," she giggled, always in awe at the cats that had come before her and learned herbs she would probably have never stumbled upon as medicinal on her own.

She had so far to go to catch up to the far gone medicine cats. The ones not even stories seemed to remember. Understandably. Theirs was not a luxurious task. A heroic task. They were there to heal the ones that were seen as heroic. Nothing more, nothing less.

"Dandelion's a bit different. While useful for injuries and avoiding their infection, they are mostly used to numb the pain of specific injuries. That numbing agent isn't just on cuts, neither. You chew on one for any period of time, and your tongue's going to go so numb you'll have problem speaking. The numbness extends to the throat without having to swallow the leaves. Between the bitterness of the herbs and the numb throat though, I tend to prefer honey unless the throat ache is too severe... or I want the bloody arse to shut their trap for a few," Lightningstorm mewed, giggles escaping her once more as she offered Rabbitpaw a playful wink, letting him know she was kidding on that last threat. For the most part.

"How's it, Duckfeather? Anything particular hurts? Everything is a valid answer, but specifics help me find anything that needs swifter tending to," she mewed, lapis hues once more on her patient, assessing her stance as she took note of her paws. She would begin a full check-up as soon as the molly was done, already having an idea of at least one burn on her, but she preferred knowing where the warrior was most uncomfortable to have a guiding point to start with, especially with other patients waiting with just as much need of her attention now.

Name:
Dapplebreeze
Gender & Pronouns:
Female | She/Her
Rank:
Fury Lieutenant
Injury Overview:
Scorched paw pads | Heat Exhaustion | Mild smoke damage to throat and lungs
Live/Die/Desired Outcome:
Live
Other:
Don't mind me making sure I remember what Dapplebreeze was avoiding the medicine cat for.

Paw pads throbbing as they scraped on the camp's arid soil, Dapplebreeze breathed with a mild level of ease for the first time once Hawkfur had been deposited inside the medicine cat's den by a private nest. She knew that the medicine cat had asked for everyone to stick outside so she could see their injuries better, but frankly she doubted there would be any problems seeing the tom's burns even inside her underground den. There was a small sense of urgency to her even as she coughed, desperately holding back a visible wince as she flinched from the action, her burnt paws taking more punishment as her throat suffered from the mild smoke damage she had taken in as well. While the fury respected and trusted the medicine cat, having had her own life saved by her once before, she couldn't help but feel a small bias towards Hawkfur's treatment coming before some of the others. A selfish notion, of course. One that she knew well stemmed from her fear of losing yet another family member to the flames. But there was nothing she could do about it other than close her eyes, ignore the pain, and wait.

The former queen, focused as she was on keeping her pain out of mind, of keeping the heat of the flames away from her as it stubbornly seemed to cling to her pelt - not wishing for the medicine cat to use any of her precious herbs on herself until the rest of her injured clanmates were tended to - missed his arrival. He spoke a singular word, but it caught her by surprise. She could usually sense him before he sat besides her, quiet as he usually was. Her nose must be more clogged up with smoke than she thought, and an attempt to take a deep breath ended in another small cough escaping her instead, forcing her to regain her composure as swiftly as possible. His gaze was studious, and she could only assume he was concerned in earnest. Batglare was not the type to waste his time with questioning another otherwise.

Opening her maw to speak, Dapplebreeze thought better about it, settling for a simple nod. She wished to elaborate. To talk about how worried she was for her darling bird's mate. For their deputy. For those whose breathing might be irrevocably damaged thanks to this horrendous event. To ask him the same question. To inspect him as thoroughly as he was inspecting her and fuss over his injuries if she found any.

But to open her mouth was dangerous just now. She might selfishly indulge instead in finally allowing the pain to win over, and her raw, charred pads would not be the end of her. This was nothing that time and rest wouldn't fix. Why... if she wasn't worried for Hawkfur's safety, she would no doubt be in the warriors' den already. Her lack of preventive measures taken were on no one but herself. She had chosen to prioritize the fire after her task in containing it had been done, refusing to run to the falls for a coat of water to protect herself. Her methods chosen to avoid any more flames bursting out and burning anyone else. Hawkfur had already been burned. Crowtooth had almost been the spark's victim. What if her little sapling had crumbled under the inferno next?

Dapplebreeze almost shuddered at the thought, knowing that if she were to be given the choice, she would do it all the same way again. If she had no regrets over her course of action, she could muster this pain for as long as it took to leave. And yet her need to ensure her current companion's well being tugged at her, no matter how much the act of moving - of doing anything, really - felt like talons piercing and searing the flesh from her pads, the throbbing seemingly never ending. Believing herself to be in enough control over her facial expressions after a moment of silence, she turned blue hues towards golden, tilting her head in query. It was a far cry from the questioning she would usually try and tone down for his sake, but it would have to suffice for now.

Leechscar flinched as Batglare so graciously 'helped' him over to Badgerbait. Then he left him to go talk to his girlfriend! Leechscar would have bemoaned how he was left behind to sulk in pain all by his lonesome. But his roleplayer was tired and only making a quick post so he doesn't forget later.

Vinepaw padded over listening to Crowtooths order he sat near the edge of the cluster of cats not wanting to get in the way besides he wasn’t injured just a bit wheezy. Who would have thought a cat meant to dig a trench would have gotten smoke in his lungs oh well. He silently watched his friend work while taking small breaths. When it seemed to be his turn he padded over “I inhaled a bit of smoke anything you can do to help my breathing?”

@Dolomedes [Rabbitpaw]

Rabbitpaw
He/him | WC Medicine Cat Apprentice| Moons: 12 | Part Manx cat

Rabbitpaw listened carefully as his mentor started to elaborate on the herbs in use and disuse and it seemed that he was on the mark when it came to a berry helping lungs but not quite in the way that he understood. The idea
of having lung scarring was something he didn't realize was a thing, though it made sense, though the idea of that kind of damage was terrifying. Was that what Crowtooth had? He had been in the first fire, was that what happened to him? The apprentice frowned at the idea, hopefully no one gained such an injury from this fire. Though on that topic, how was it that Lightningstorm could tell lung scarring from irritated lungs-

His green eyes lifted from watching Daffodilpaw to his mentor as she started to explain just that... different types of coughing? He's never really thought about the difference in that either... he tried to compare what he heard of the other cats in the area to other types of coughing he's heard though, it was likely due to inexperience, much of it sounded the same as it always does... Juniper berry for lung scarring, and other things? Though only deep coughing? Light coughing should be treated with honey water... that made sense, he thinks... It would do well too remember it, especially given their cast of so many patients here right now. "Hopefully... most of everyone only needs some honey or less than..." He mumbles in thought before realizing with a slight jolt that Miss Lightningstorm was walking away towards Duckfeather.

This time, she offered the honey water, juniper berry... and a flower of sorts he didn't quite recognize. Though the juniper berry meant that the coughing was worse than Daffodil's. His ears folded back in worry but he took the chance to try and compare what Duckfeather sounded like compared to the apprentice. He decided not to speak about his comparison, not wanting to worry the Molly but yapping about how 'juniper berries means its worse than just a irritated throat, right' because he can only imagine how distressing that would be from a medicine cat... even a medicine cat apprentice. He made a note to bring it up later.

"It's amazing to me that most herbs were discovered." He spoke earnestly, showing that he was still listening despite his silence. He was just taking a moment to fully process all of the information being thrown his way. "It's amazing that so many little plants hold so much ability to help." He offered, amazed by how much a single herb like dandelion can do to help his clan. Though he quieted in wait of Duckfeather's words, though it made him worried about her throat and having to talk... could she show instead? Can he offer that as a way of explanation? He didn't want her to hurt her throat and be in more than she already was so with a slightly nervous glance to Miss Lightningstorm and then offered in a lower, kind voice to Duckfeather,

"If talking hurts too much, you can show us instead, that can work too if you want.."

When had he ended up on Crowtooth's back? Ugh, he looked like a ridiculous kit! But each time he tried to wriggle down so he could walk himself, Dapplebreeze and Crowtooth were right there to snap at him to hold still. Eventually the Fury's exhaustion took hold and he let himself be carried back home.

Lightningstorm and Rabbitpaw were already preparing by the time the fire fighters arrived, and Hawkfur was deposited gently in a moss nest. He grunted a thanks to Crowtooth, giving Lightningstorm a tired, but still somewhat cheeky grin as she approached. "'S not that bad, but sure feels it." He did his best to stretch out his back right leg, wincing at the strain. This was the first time he got a good look at the burn, and whoo boy. Some of his red striped fur had been completely burned away, other tufts blackened by smoke. The skin was red and throbbing, blisters already forming. He groaned, letting his head fall back onto the nest. "I just had to play hero, didn't I?" The self-deprecating words were hinted with amusement, however strained. A deep breath had him choking, the scent of smoke stuck in his throat and caking his mouth. Yeuch.

Her first emergency patient tended to, Lightningstorm turned to the second. It was difficult sometimes. To be a medicine cat. A fact that she was certain Rabbitpaw was contending with right now. The moment the calico had laid eyes on the injured tom and those who carried him back to camp, she'd wanted to run to their sides. Prioritize them above all else. Because they were her friends. Not her family. She didn't have that, and she would never insert herself so callously in an already well established family circle. But with friends being all she had, she couldn't help but feel biased towards them. Towards anything that could harm them. To do everything in her power to ensure they were alright.

But that was the funny thing about being in a position of responsibility like this. Having the knowledge to heal meant forgoing the choice of who to heal and when. All had to be equal. And she had accomplished that... thankfully. With a flick of her tail, she motioned for Rabbitpaw to follow her, taking her herbs down the winding tunnels of their den to where Hawkfur lay.

The easy going fury was quick to greet her, trying to dissuade any level of fretting over his injury. The wince on his face was a clear sign that he was attempting to downplay his wounds even as he stretched, and the cough that followed his jokes indicating towards smoke damage in his throat. That alone was a good sign. Despite the fact that he had been burned, he had gratefully not received further injury to his lungs. If all worked well, she would have him patched up and good as new in a few moon's time. Perhaps long sounding, but burns were fickle things, and they took time to heal. Especially large ones like his.

"Well look at you. Not just handsome, also heroic. Hope you realize that opossums aren't the type to be grateful without talking your ears off over how you shouldn't save them. The bloody things actually think that playing dead makes them immune to it. It's that thick skull of theirs. Nothing gets through it," the medicine cat purred as she pushed her honeyed water towards the tom, thinking it might be a good idea to make another batch before heading to the surface again.

"Here, drink this. It's almost as sweet as me and will take care of that annoying cough of yours. Good news, too. It really does look much worse than it is. I think if you are a good patient and let me wrap that up nicely with a decent poultice, you might just get through this without a lasting scar. Rabbitpaw, love... You have the, ah, yes! That's the thing! Burdock root. Looks like the stars are watching out for you, love. Got a hold of this just today," she mewed, gathering a nice string of the fresh roots and setting it to the side, turning to Rabbitpaw once more.

"Ears, I'm going to need you to bring that flat, smooth rock I use to grind herbs with while I clean Hawkfur's burns. You're about to learn how to wrap a burn like this. And you, Handsome," she added, her earnest smile slowly turning cheeky as she quirked a brow. "The poultice I'm going to give you should numb the pain in your leg, but it might be a bit much while I am applying it and bandaging it. I'll need you to eat a couple of poppy seeds to sleep away the process. Can guarantee you'll be waking up to much less pain and this pretty face of mine, though. So here, eat up."

Her exhausted body struggled, but she leaned down and carefully lapped at the water…swallowing hurt like hell, but this was supposed to help, huh?…Worth a shot. She sort of listened as the medicine cat taught her apprentice…it was interesting, the cats voice soothing at the same time. It was something to focus on other than the struggle to breathe and such. Now to eating the flower and berry…she struggled but managed to sicher and force it down. Her throat felt a bit better, still sore though.

Now…Where she hurt most?…Everything felt valid, but the medicine cat was right, specifics were needed. But speaking hurt…then the insightful little thing said to show them instead, of course she could have thought of that on her own if her head wasn’t so foggy. Her sprain flicked to her paws…they hurt and burned and blistered like hell, walking was a hell no at the moment. Then to her shoulder, which looked a bit irritated and burned, but nothing too serious…then…right…she felt…odd. Of course no cat would be okay in this state, but her head feel fizzy and…”…dizzy…” she did her best to muster out, but it caused a few rough coughs.

@Dolomedes @Alchemist Kitsune (ahhh sorry for such a late and short response!)

"Aw, handsome and heroic?" Hawkfur chuckled, laying back as Lightningstorm got out her herbs. Her analogy earned a confused silence, Hawkfur's disoriented mind struggling to understand just what oppossums had to do with anything. He didn't recall seeing any oppossums? The offered honey water was lapped up gratefully, a broken purr rumbling in his throat. Her reassurance that the wound looked worse than it was settled a nagging anxiety in his chest, and the Fury relaxed more. "Oh, good." And little chance of a lasting scar! "I consider my fur my best attribute--I'd hate to ruin it." Was he making much sense? Not really.

Rabbitpaw began grinding herbs, Hawkfur watching him with the distant interest of a pain-hazed patient. Poppy seeds were pushed towards him, and he lapped them up without fuss. He was looking forward to a good nap. Just before the seeds took him under, he locked eyes with Lightningstorm. "When you see Crowtooth... can you make sure he's not feeling sorry for 'imself and not gettin' treatment?" Hawkfur knew his brother, and Crowtooth was likely feeling guilty for Hawkfur's injury. "Bloody softy, that one." His voice softened, azure gaze growing cloudy as the poppy seeds took hold. He laid his head down, exhaling a long breath and slipping into unconsciousness.

Taking note of Rabbitpaw's offer for her to not speak, the herbalist tapped her chin in thought. Perhaps if she asked Duckfeather to sign instead of talk it would be better for her? Of course, this would be assuming that the feline knew how to sign at all, and that was not taking into account how much pain she might be in physically. If her muscles hurt more than her throat, it might not be a viable solution. Not to mention the signs of overheating she was already displaying making the herbalist uncomfortable with her moving around more than necessary at all.

Turned out Lightningstorm needed to say nothing at all on the matter. The warrior was soon attempting to signal towards herself, flashing crudely blistered pads to the wind. Right... that needed to be tended to quickly. Between the overheating, the dreadful looking paw pads, and the damage to her lungs, the medicine cat had a right mind to keep this one in her den for observation. This was cemented as the molly spoke, a single word being all that she needed to spring the calico into action. She knew the she-cat had been the worse looking of the cats there, but she had not thought it was so severe already. The flames must have been worse than she had imagined.

"Rabbitpaw. I want you to help me carry Duckfeather to a private patient nest. Duckfeather," she mewed, her voice brisk and commanding for the first time since she had started tending the patients, making it clear she was expecting quick responses even as her voice softened for her patient. "The flower you ate should help you feel cooler and less dizzy, but it takes time to take effect. And rest. I'm taking you down to our den. The air is cooler and dryer there. It should be more comfortable for you to breathe and cool off there. I'll make a poultice for your paws and by the time you wake up tomorrow even your paws will be feeling a little better. I just need you to walk a little more. Lean on us, love. We've got you."

Lightningstorm would need to make sure there were no other injuries as she worked, but that would have to wait. While the feverfew and honeyed water would help her with her heat exhaustion, the feverfew needed time to work. And those blistered paws getting tended to would no doubt make her feel much better. A part of her considered giving the molly a couple of poppy seeds and having her sleep the worst of it away. But she needed the molly alert enough to let her know if she needed something. Not risk having her pass away in her sleep. The least she could do was ensure she was as comfortable as she could make her under the circumstances and hope she was strong enough to make the trip. Much as she didn't normally mind her diminutive, scrawny stature, it was certainly no help when it came to carrying cats anywhere, no matter how small they were.
