As your party of adventurers looks at this somewhat run down town, dodgey looking people and a disheveled streets with manholes that don't quite meet the lip of the stone. A few of you have already tripped over an uneven rock or two on your treck to this building.
You all collectively look down at the Piece of paper, formerly sealed, and signed by your High Ranking Official from your stations in Waterdeep. On the rather tarnished and crumpled paper, is the plea;
Quote:
Dear adventurers,
I've recently discovered that my dear friend, the mayor has lost his wife. Although the man himself believes it to be due to dirty work. He stated, and I quote :
"This town is full of riff raff, and I wouldn't put it past them to kill my wife in hopes for my fortune."
This is why I've sent you his way. In hopes of helping a dear old friend. I myself would have ventured however I have become tied up assisting the Lord of Waterdeep and it's been decided we would send you in my stead.
Please assist me in avenging my old friends wife, and report back to me with immediate results.
You arrived in Ampleforth a few hours ago it feels. You are actively standing in the doorway of the City Hall, the receptionist has shoed you out...the mayor is busy. For a man who just lost his wife...he sure is keeping his nose in his ink and quill.
As you try and figure out what exactly to do...Other than the City Hall three additional town buildings stand out to you.
Items that stand out;
- Scattered flyers of the fireworks show...here you can faintly make out something of a gentleman in a rather large looking hat that has a pointed end. He has a white beard.
- Mirrors making up most of the buildings walls...you couldn't imagine what cleaning this would be like.
- A locked door. Neither the receptionist nor the mayor have a key. They say it's for storage.
- A book sitting atop their desk, many red flaggs sticking out of the tome. Beside it you see a golden guilded closed book, a neat quill sitting beside it. What's in it?

The Mayors personal room. Adorned with fabrics of all kind, a closet of dresses and jewlery. Heels and shoes you can't see the mayor wearing.
You see a dresser with a mirror attached, makeup products and necklaces hanging off anything that could be considered a hook.
The bed seems large enough to fit two.
No one occupies this room, and the Mayor is in a meeting.
Each have their own...peculiar set of locals who seem to have a better inkling of what's going on...Inspect their wares, ask them specifics. Get to the bottom of the Mayor's Wife and find the suspect...before you yourself become a victim.
Time is of the essence.

But these fingers and these palms
Full of love despite the scars
They show indisputably I have so much more to grow
Oh, I can change, I can evolve
I can get up when I fall
I'll live contentedly, I don't need a reason why
Standing tall and standing strong
I have found where I belong
In the arms of somebody, there is no more need to cry

"Thank you for allowing me some time, Mayor, I understand you're a busy man. I'm sorry for your loss, for what that's worth, I promise that we'll do everything we can to see your wife's murder be brought to justice." Detective Rose, or as he rather be called, Dol, was recently informed of a case that needed his ( many ) eyes on it. A suspected foul play case in a sleepy town. Of course, the letter he received from his informant, suggested otherwise... and the fact that he was here for a murder. "I was wondering if you would be open to sharing any details about your wife. Anything you would be willing to share... Though I am also curious about what her death was ruled as, was there any specific doctor who performed her autopsy?" He started first. He knew that it was likely rude of him to ask after a person's dead wife, but he called for someone to come solve her murder, as he believes, and so he should expect that Dol needs some information, or at the very least be pointed to someone who could give some.
As soon as the giant doors to his study open. You see no body directly in front of you. After a minute passes you hear a deep "ahem" and finally look down. There, you see a tiny gentleman with a tailor made suit, silk tie and cufflinks loosely hanging by his wrists. A glint from one of his tiny paws shows a...is that a wedding ring?
He adjusts his glasses, tail twitching behind him. "All of you lot are really trying to take up my time. I'm a busy man with important things to write down and truthfully I don't care for what you're selling." he began.
He stuttered the moment you began to speak, however, stuttering on an 'f' motion coming from his mouth. If you didn't know better, you'd say some of his beard hair was stuck on his lip.
"Wife?? I beg your pardon?? I've never been married!" he began. Stomping his little foot. "I don't know what you lot are doing here, and why I keep hearing talk about a supposed dead wife?? I've never been...I've never been married!" for a second, you see him buffer. Almost as if he himself didn't believe what he was saying. But almost as if coming back to his 'senses' he continued on.
"There's no wife! There's no body! And most certanly there's no doctor to examine any sort of body. Are you sure you're in the right town??" he stated, absentmindedly rolling his ring around his finger. As if it were second nature.
You get the feeling the mayor isn't exactly lying...but. Something's not right. Something's off. What are you missing?

...What? Dolius was usually very good at keeping up the friendly and well meaning facade, especially when he wasn't sure who was innocent and who were people of interest... and overall, he couldn't help the way he frowned at the information that the mayor gave him. "I... Yeah this is a new one even for me.." He mumbled under his breath and quickly took to pulling out the letter that dragged him and his pal out here, and held it out to the mayor to take and review. "That's not what I was told..." And with a glance at the mayor's ring and then very carefully continued speaking, "You.. Look, I don't want to pry, nor imply that you are a liar of any kind, but is the ring for something else then?"
"Maybe it's a me thing, I have some weird culture shocks from underground and on ground living, but I could've sworn that rings like those are symbols of marriage." Dolius added on to his previous statement and started to look around at the space. At the different jewelry and vanity and shoes. Hey, he wasn't the type to judge. He also wasn't in any position to say anything about his wife... but there was still something going on because if there was no murder, why was there someone impersonating the mayor? It may no longer be a homicide case but there is certainly an investigation to be had. "You wouldn't happen to know anyone that would be trying to impersonate you? Because there's still something strange here, if you would like I can continue to look into this and who may have authored this letter in your name?"
His many eyes narrowed in thought and his mind went to the other space of the town hall, and Orion... he hadn't had much of an other than business interaction with her. Nothing struck him as odd in the space... though there was something strange about Lupine in the inn. "Lupine.. I was looking for a place to stay, and they mentioned that someone may have been messing with their registry book, writing names he didn't recognize in it. Is there just some elaborate trickster gracing this town?" Though he was more so mumbling to himself now. Oh right. "Right, enough of my endless talking.. If I am allowed to continue looking into this, can you tell me about that room in the front room of the town hall?" That was a personal curiosity but yeah.
Slumber finally got a chance to talk with the mayor, they'd be making the most of it. "Excuse me, I have a couple more questions on behalf of my adventuring colleagues."
Slumber shuffled their feet and readjusted their sleeping cap. "May I ask about you and Lupine? You seem to be close friends, apparently, you invited them here on a business trip?" A soft pause. "Is it Lupine you've been buying clothes for from the Guildmaster?" Slumber hoped they hadn't pushed it too far.
They were hopeful for an answer, or at least part of one.
“Mr Mayor, sorry to bother you!” she called through the large doors and gave them a sharp knock with her cherry red claws. “I seem to be a bit puzzled. We were sent here, to solve the mystery of your wife, but whoever I ask they tell me you’ve never had a wife.” she held out her hand to shake. “Oh, how rude of me! Detective Roos, sir. But just call me Cheri.”
So many questions. So many hard to answer. He felt his head spinning. Something shrieking...singing? A tap on his paw as he brought his ring close to inspect. Surely...it was just a ring. No other meaning. A gift...yes. A gift. That's what his mind his telling him. His heart? He can't hear it. It's muffled, it's yelling but it's so far away. He knows something isn't right but...everything is currently acting correctly. Or so his mind says.
He leaves the ring question unanswered, confusion fresh on his face as he turns his attention to two newcomers in his questionair that he's apparently holding today. He'd have to talk to Orion about this in the future.
Once a letter was brought out he inspected it. Bringing it close, examining the inklines. He took great pride in how he wrote. It was classy and dignified. "No. No this is without a doubt my handwriting...odd. I. I don't remember sending this out but this is...this is all me." the paper crinkles where he holds it, his grip tightening as his heart screams. The singing was getting louder. "Anyways as for that door....I'm pretty sure it's just a broom closet. Neither me nor Orion have a key to it...nor does Lupine I can assure you...and I'd never let that blacksmith anywhere near anything pertaining to city hall. Loud and boisterous." an undignified sniff as his tail thwapped against the floor.
Big ears twitched as he turned to look up at the two newcomers. "Yes. They came here to begin a new business...and since I was just begining to grow this town I offered them an inn building to build up their fam-no. No lupine has no...family. Why would I say family?" it felt like his chest was going to burst. Something screaming at what he'd just said. As if it were wrong. For two seconds, flashes of a cold, tiny hand, medicine flasks, a worried lupine...and someone else. Who was it? A pointed hat...a white beard. Who is that?
A shake of the head. "They began here and have been building their business ever since...I'd like to believe I helped give them a stepping stone." a belly laugh. As if nothing were wrong. "But no. I am not buying clothes for him...he doesn't swing that way." he said, brushing his hand over his beard.
Big spectacles than turned to the newest joiner. "I mean...it's true I've never...never had a wife." his heard felt as though it were going to shatter.

It all seemed to come together, to click in her head. The wizard! The medicine! She needed to know what that medicine was, who the firework guy was. She knew there was something fishy about him. “Mr mayor. Have you ever heard of a man with a big hat, a white beard, a wizardy- firework guy? Is there a firework event happening or already happened? Have you taken medication recently, or do you maybe think someone has given you any?” this was surely too far, but she felt she would explode if she didn’t solve this. She was sure she was on the right track! No wonder no one remembered the mayors wife?! Of course! Of course of course of course! “Mr mayor. Don’t worry, I WILL FIX THIS!!” and then her white and grey feathery tail disappeared behind the grand doors.
