Event [#event]

ROOKFIRE
[ he/him | shadowclan medicine cat app | purrks ]
[ #rookMCA24 ]
rookfire had not quite grown into the habit of resting in the medicine den during the day yet, still preferring the edge of the clearing to keep eyes and ears on everyone moving around, especially with the new rules now. today, however, the medicine cat apprentice had sought out the younger tom for company, something they admittedly rarely engaged in during the day, not with rookfires internal pull to keep going, patrol, hunt, gather. he didnt like to stay in one place for too long, needed the repetition of being out of camp at the same time each day and the entertainment of the world beyond the safety of the clearing. all within limits, he knew he wasnt as present as he should be and was trying to remember to stick around mossfreckle more often instead of getting lost in duties that werent his.

his 'mentors' lilting purr was met with a low rumble of his own, originating deep in his throat and escaping without his permission to serve as a clear sign of affection whilst his expression remained neutral, even though it wasnt as rare to catch the medic purring anymore, it was still reserved for one cat only and rook hoped mossfreckle knew. dark pelted form followed the more experienced medic like a shadow, settling down close enough to be brushing pelts, his own bundle of herbs placed on the ground in a similar fashion as mossfreckles.

he remained quiet as mossfreckle introduced their event. the idea was sweet and whilst something that he knew would be relevant eventually, it still made him uncomfortable. the thought of sharing valuable knowledge, even if most cats participating would forget in no time, to take a step away from being better than everyone else and risk his position. it was silly, stupid even, that after all those moons, his mind was still deadset on being valuable and doing everything in his power to be indispensable. he wouldnt be left alone to fend for himself again, yet the memories of his mother continued to haunt the medic in more ways than he realised.

after a short while, more cats than he had expected appeared to take part in the event which didnt really help the sneaking discomfort at all but also reminded him of where he stood. he was where he was supposed to be, he didnt have to fear anything and these were people looking up to him.

quietly clearing his throat, rookfire shuffled to unwrap his bundle, large leaf unfolding easily and revealing a small assortment or plants.
"as mossfreckle already introduced, we'll take a look at a pawful of herbs today following the colours of the rainbow as our theme. we'll begin with red and a herb a lot of you may already be familiar with-" white tipped paws scooped the red flower and seed up to hold them up briefly before placing them down between the medics and the crowd.

"these are a poppy and a poppy seed. as you can see, poppies are rather small, with ruffled red petals and a dark center. we only need the seeds for treatment but you collect the whole flowerheads on patrol, we dry them afterwards." the medic began, as usual having not really practiced what exactly he would say and feeling like he was stumbling over his words despite the knowledge that his voice hadnt even wavered once.

"poppy seeds are chewed in cases of shock or injury to dull the pain. while smaller doses, that being one seed for apprentices or small warriors and two for average sized warriors, will only dull the pain, for more severe injuries two to three seeds can be used to provide more relief and put the injured cat to sleep." cool grey eyes darting around the crowd yet avoiding all eyes expertly, the medic left them a moment to take in that information. "finally, never ever give a kit or nursing queen more than one poppy seed." with that, rookfire tipped his head forward slightly to let mossfreckle know he had concluded.

Poppy seeds. To dull pain. Got it. And the number depends on the severity of the injury. He guessed that much. Did the same work for other herbs? He carefully studied the red flower on the ground, taking in the shape of it. It looked... Interesting, for a lack of better words. And very recognisable. He'd be able to identify it easily.

He should... Probably remember what they did.

The first thing that came to Icekit's mind was that the flower was prettyyyy. Striking red petals with a dark centre. And it was interesting what the seeds did. It could put a cat to sleep? That was cool, but also quite terrifying that such small seeds could do as much as knock a cat out. Perhaps if she could get her paws on them...

Wow. A strange looking flower— Red like blood— that could help ease pain. Physical pain. Nothing for his constant tormenting. But. That was not the point. The point right now was to learn about these stupid plants, no matter how much he believed to be useless. He wasn't a medicine cat. And he sure wasn't planning to become one, either. So what was he going to do with this knowledge?

Oh wow! Pretty red flowers. With cool seeds. Hawkpaw perked up at the mention of the purpose of the seeds, a thought coming to mind. She stood from her sitting position, getting to all fours as if something had poked her.

"What happens if you give 4 or 5 of them? Or 10?" She blurted, her voice loud and obnoxious.

Her previous herb lessons with him had both been cut short, quite regrettably; to no fault of his own, when duty called he had to be present, Speepysunrise had grown up to understand such obligations. But she knew it would do good to learn of these, it held importance and... Truthfully, mama had known of herbs. Besides her own need to learn every secret and bit of knowledge the world held, she wanted to be as educated as her mama and Miss Grandmama. Any less would not do and maybe she would feel closer to mama as such. She would have to request to remain present during the kits' poison lesson if it took place. She had had the lesson before, but who knew what else Mossfreckle may be teaching now. Towards the back of the crowds, opposite the white-tufted enforcer whose appearance was dull and messy as it always was (despite her attempts to look well-groomed), appeared Nightshiver, the fresh scarring apparent across her face. The forever strayed not too far from the nursery, anxious about any kits escaping camp, but sat outside all the same to keep watch over the little ones that had joined for the lesson. She knew Mossfreckle to be good with the young and Rookfire responsible as they came, but being there herself to keep watch eased some of her anxiety, tail wrapping around her growing belly.

A herb lesson? Count her in! It sounded like a truly useful thing to be able to do.

Pausing at the back of the crowd, the apprentice frowned momentarily as her eyes scanned for someone to sit with. She wasn’t going to talk, most likely, but she did want someone she was at least comfortable with. Finally, her attention landed on a tabby she knew well.

Padding over, Ibispaw sat herself beside Hawkbite. Offering him a nod, trying to be at least a little professional, before her eyes went to the medicine cats. Time to learn something new.

Two familiar felines appeared near him. Hawkbite would first address Nightshiver. It was curious seeing her here, but he welcomed her with a small smile. "Guess we both can learn something new, huh?" he commented before looking at the group of kits surrounding the medics. "Might be a good idea to keep a close eye on them. Especially Dawnstar's new children. They've been chaos," he scoffed. The only interactions he had were the screaming Scorpion one, the thief Hound one and the moody Ember one. That was enough for him to already have a headache. He couldn't imagine how Dawnstar was tolerating it.

Next, Ibispaw appeared. His apprentice sitting close to him made him cast a glance in her direction. "Y'know. You'd think I'd know some of this stuff, but I'm useless when it comes to herbs," he joked lightly as Rookfire explained the first herb. Hawkbite hadn't interacted with that one yet, aside from when he got his ass kicked by Spiderthroat. At that time, he didn't care what herbs he was being fed, it helped and it worked. Now, he knew why.

Snowkit flicked her ears when she heard Mossfreckle's voice. She turned her head and looked over at the group of cats forming. A lesson or two about herbs wouldn't hurt. It was the kits goal to become one of the best warriors of the clan so extra lessons was exactly what she wanted. A good warrior knew a lot of stuff in her opinion, so she started padding over to the other gathering cats and caught a glimpse of her brother, Bramblekit. She may not always get along with Bramblekit, but he was still her brother and Snowkit didn't always want to fight. As long as he didn't try to baby her too much. Actually, the blue eyed kit almost never wanted to fight, but she was so easily triggered by.. alot.

Snowkit kept looking around while walking towards the medicine cats. She could've sat down beside her brother, but wanted to socialize with some other cats, too. The white and gray kit padded over to another kit that was sitting in front of Mossfreckle and Rookfire, whirling up some dust with her tail. "Hi, you look excited!" Snowkit purred, pointing at the dust getting thrown up behind the other kit. Scorpionkit she believed her name was, and gave her a friendly look.

At least one cat wasn't distrubed by her kicking up some dust. Snowkit approached from behind, facing the wrath of a violently wagging tail as she awaited the medics to continue with their lesson. It wasn't long before her voice chiming in broke Scorp's thoughts and her ears swirled to pinpoint the voice. Her tail would stop swirling up the dirt, being mindful now of the others around her. "HI!" She'd squeak, offering a bright smile. "I'm soooo excited! I wanna learn all the things! Gonna be amazing like mama!" Scorpionkit spoke enthusiastically before Rookfire's voice made her swivel her head back towards him.

The medicine cat explained the flowers, although Scorpionkit was more distracted on how pretty they were. "They're so pretty..." she whispered to her new-found friend -- whether Snowkit wanted that title or not. "OH OH OH, I HAVE QUESTION!" Scorp's enthusiastic voice chimed above everyone. However, Hawkpaw beat her to it. Scorp's head whipped around so fast as her big eyes rested on the cat who had the audacity to steal her question. She didn't linger on it long, a cheerful smile returning as she turned back to the medicine cat. "Yeah! What that one said! What happens?!"

Palepaw
◆ ShadowClan | 7 moons | [59/100]

He'd almost missed the lesson. The little pale calico kitten ran towards the group of cats participated around Rookfire and Mossfreckle. The last time Palepaw had the chance to learn anything was with Lostspark, who is...no longer with them. With a little damper in his usual cheerful mood, Palepaw still made his way towards the group, not wanting to miss of a chance to learn.

The first one was...Poppy, a little red flower and dark center. Collect the whole thing...okay, that is something useful to remember if Palepaw even needed to do a herb patrol. Though he was sure they would be reminded a second time if it does happen. It's still quite interesting how it needed to be dried and it made him wonder about the origins of all the herbs. Palepaw's curiosity sent him into a tunnel of possible questions. How did the first medicine cat find this? How did they know it needed to be dried. I'm sure they needed to test things out! That's kind of cool.

Before his thought drown him into tunnel vision, he continued to listen to Rookfire talk.

Poppy seeds were for pain, they dull the senses. That sounded quite scary...how senses could just dull. But it was definitely useful if you don't want to be feeling anything at the moment.

One for apprentice, and small warriors.
Two for warriors,
Two to three to sleep
And never more than one to kits or nursing queens! Got it.

Palepaw was shocked to hear someone bring up feeding cats more than 3. But it got Palepaw curious as well. Considering there were limits and doses, having more wouldn't end up well at all. That was Palepaw's guess at least.

[ open for any interactions. ]

Pantherkit
medium-furred, dark brown mackerel tabby with white paws, hazel eyes
purrks: n/a
he/him | shadowclan kit | 1 moon

Pantherkit sat among the gathered cats, his pale hazel eyes sharp as he listened to Rookfire's words. Despite his initial reluctance, he found himself drawn in, watching closely as the dark-furred medicine cat apprentice displayed the delicate red flower for all to see. The poppy’s bright petals seemed out of place in such a serious lesson, almost too cheerful for what it represented. But Pantherkit knew better than to let appearances fool him. He may not have learned yet that the things that looked harmless were often the most dangerous, but his suspicions were on edge about it. His nose wrinkled slightly as Rookfire described how the seeds could dull pain, or even put a cat to sleep. The idea of such a small, unassuming thing having that much power intrigued him more than he cared to admit. His paws shuffled against the ground, pressing into the hard-packed dirt beneath him as the gears in his mind began to turn. So that’s how medicine cats control pain. They don’t just fix wounds; they control how much a cat feels them. They decide how much relief someone gets. Pantherkit’s gaze flickered to the poppy seeds Rookfire placed before the group, and he felt a growing sense of respect for the knowledge the medicine cats held. It wasn’t just about healing—it was about power. The power to ease suffering, the power to keep cats alive, or... to let them sleep forever.

The thought sent a strange thrill through him, a quiet understanding of just how vital these skills could be. But something Rookfire said stuck with him, and Pantherkit couldn’t shake it. One seed for kits and nursing queens. Just one. His sharp mind latched onto the restriction immediately, trying to piece together the reasoning behind it. If the seeds were so useful, why limit them so harshly for certain cats? What would happen if someone didn’t follow that rule? The idea burned in the back of his mind until he couldn’t keep quiet anymore. He straightened up, pushing down his hesitation as he glanced at the medicine cats. His voice was steady, though a flicker of curiosity crept into his tone. "Why is it only one seed for kits and queens?" His striped tail flicked behind him as he tilted his head slightly, pale eyes fixed on Rookfire. "What happens if they’re given more? Would they sleep forever?" It wasn’t just idle curiosity—it was a need to understand. Pantherkit’s mind was always working, calculating, and trying to grasp every detail that could give him an edge. The more he knew, the more capable he knew he could become. If there were risks to herbs, if there were ways to use them in dangerous or powerful ways, he needed to know where the lines were drawn. Knowledge was strength, after all, and Pantherkit wasn’t one to pass up the chance to gain an advantage, even if it came in the form of something as strange as herbs.

He watched Rookfire closely, waiting for the answer with more interest than he let on. What Pantherkit learned today might be useful in ways no one else could see yet. The others might think herbs were just for healing, but Pantherkit understood that they could be so much more than that. And he intended to learn exactly how to use that knowledge to his advantage.

Pure black pelt; dark mackerel markings; amber eyes
She/her || 7 moons || ShadowClan Apprentice

Mentor: Shrewstep • Post Count: /100 • SiteBio

Shadepaw listened with sharp interest, absorbing the facts and knowledge. She opened her maw and noted the scent, something nobody else seemed to be doing. Herbs were powerful. Knowledge was powerful. If she was hurt, she'd know exactly how to fix her wounds. She'd know how to fix her clanmates wounds, or even enemies. Power-- That was what this world was about. The power to survive. The power to become great. She wasn't thinking about Clovepool for once-- She was thinking about herself.
Her ears perked when she heard the question many were echoing. Yes... A good question. Why not more? She could guess, but that wasn't enough. She liked clear hard facts and evidence. Not this vague mumbo-jumbo about spirits in the stars or luck. Real life.
Her amber gaze was drawn to a similarly black-pelted kit. One of Dawnstar's kits. She knew immediately, drawing his appearance from her mind from when she saw him at the Grimpeak. She did not know his name. But something about him seemed... familiar. Maybe it was the intelligence already showing in his eyes, or his intense stare. Whatever the reason, she knew that this kit would hold a strong influence in this clan, that might not all be to do with the fact that he's Dawnstar's child. Whether for positive or negative she couldn't tell, but one thing was for sure... It would be interesting to watch him grow up. Him, and all his siblings. She knew all of them would have an influence. And maybe she could figure out a way to use them...

[ 59 moons | She / Her | Shc Forever Queen ]

Eyes adjusted to the outside light as she returned Hawkbite welcome expression with a light wave of her tail, offering Ibispaw a small smile the moment she noticed the young apprentice being there too; she hadn't seen this young one in some time, Nightshiver was glad to find Ibispaw was doing okay as far as she could tell. Though her nerves were minutely calmed being with a friend so dear to her, the forever queen couldn't help but glance back at the nursery even when Hawkbite addressed her. Her expression remained dual, torn between nursery and friendliness as her smile grew lopsided and she responded to the commander;
"In,, indeed,,,"
She paused, that familiar knot of anxiety in her stomach. And yet, a genuine chuckle came from the white lady at his comment on the leader's children, and her expression grew fond thinking of the brash little lot.
"That is,,, what I'm,,, he,here for. Watching,,, over them,,, the kits."
Honestly, she wouldn't expect Dawnstar's kitten to be anything but darling, chaotic menaces. But perhaps she better keep that sentiment to herself.
"I'm,,, i'm sure,,, they can,,, be sweet, too."
She mused, lightly bumping his shoulder; a quiet attempt to ease her own nerves, too.

She had found herself here more often lately, maybe this was her new spot to observe the daily whereabouts of her clanmates. Amongst the wild flowers and grass that decorated the burrow leading to the nursery, where kits not as important as herself and her littermates resided. Though this spot wasn't particularly in the shadows like the entrance to her mother's den had been but it would do. Despite being bigger than most kits, she was still small enough to disappear amongst the towering weeds and grass, small enough not to be noticed. Not only did she find the spot to be the perfect plays to observe without being bothered, it was also decorated with one of her most favourite things. Flowers. Small brown paws had just prodding at one of these beauties when a voice called out, loud enough to summon the attention of all cats that could hear him but not loud enough to be considered shouting. Like how mother had shouted to gather the clan that one time. Maybe Mother could learn from this tom to be a little more quieter, adderkit wasn't quite fond of all the yelling and she would have hoped mother cared enough not to do it. Although what were her inconsequential wants compared to what her mother preferred doing anyway.

Round ears angled towards the lithe freckled brown tom as he spoke, she had no clue what herbs exactly were but something told her that they were either the plants that neatly wrapped at his paws or had something to do with them. Either way he had caught her attention, some might find plants insignificant and adderkit would have too agree. Afterall what could a small fragile flower that crumbled so easily under paw do? It could never be useful. The were important to her though, and maybe to these two cats too? Could plants be useful, important even? The thought intrigued her enough to guide her paws towards the small group of cats that had started to gather around. As usual most, nearly all were strangers to her, 'cept her two siblings that stood present. A few words crossed her mind as looked over the two; Loud and Annoying. Hmmmm....um no. No rather not. Changing direction she moved through the group, eyes scanning briefly over each at cat until they landed on dark she cats with white flecks. Something about her seemed respectable and she didn't seem like the type to be loud and obnoxious. Slowly, hesitantly, Adderkit made her way over to the older she cat and sat now next to her. Staring straight ahead at the two toms who were hosting the lesson and only glancing back up at the she cat for few moments. Mother had told her- had her along with siblings to always behave during meetings. Adderkit believed she should behave for everything then because that what Mother would want. Behaving meant not being a pest. That was a negative word, she knew this now. That's what mother called any of her siblings when the misbehaved and Adderkits would never be called that.

Sleepysunrise
[ 13 moons | She / Her | Shc Enforcer ]

[ Apologies for how messy this is / if anything doesn't make sense ! ]

Sleepysunrise’s wait was patient, calm; here for knowledge and intent on absorbing every minute detail they let slip from their maw about the herbs that would be presented today. And how she hoped it would be many. She could not feel satisfied until they were all known as clear as the sun shone to her; until she knew every element, idea and technique – every bit of knowledge there was to have, so she could adequately serve Miss Grandmama and live up to her mother’s name. That is all she wished for, and today was a rare moment where tidbits of that exclusive knowledge were to be shared.

So intently focused on the knowledge ahead, Sleepysunrise nearly missed the small body moving in her peripheral vision and taking a seat at her side, effectively stumping the enforcer’s mind. This was a kitten. A kitten she didn’t know. Normally, Birdpaw would come sit with her. Or she could recognise some of her other siblings, but this little one… She scrutinized Adderkit from the corner of her eye, mild interest and recognition lighting and dimming in her eyes when she realised. Was this one of Miss Grandmama’s kittens?

She looked to be about that old, and the kitten had a similarly dark brown pelt. It was not as if the largest give away was the kitten leaving her Grandmother’s den on previous occasions, or Sleepysunrise’s recent appearance in the nursery where she was fairly certain not to ave seen this one. Or, most all, her visits to Miss Grandmama – the pelts of her kits all looked strikingly similar, but the enforcer felt this might be one of them. So… The odd thought was. Did that make them mama’s siblings, and thus this kitten her aunt? Despite Sleepysunrise being her senior?

It was a thought for the oddities, and one Sleepysunrise was quick to cast aside when her mind was already wondering over why this kitten had chosen a seat at her side. Compared her, Miss Grandmama must favour her blood kin – Sleepysunrise didn’t want to spiral into the same overwhelming thought process as when her own half siblings had been born, yet the thought was still there, ever present in her mind. Compared to kin of the blood that Miss Grandmama had born herself, Sleepysunrise must be… Nothing much. Nothing at all.

But Sleepysunrise had sworn not to let these thoughts overtake her mind once more; net when it was her duty to protect them, not when Miss Grandmama cared for them. It merely was one of the many reasons why the enforcer could not afford any mistakes, why she had to strive for perfection in all she did. And in the process, teach what she can to the young, ensure nothing happened to her family. Miss Grandmama and her kits included. Perhaps even Darkfall received a spare thought.

But if it were so, what was she meant to do? Address this kitten? The youngest enforcer had no guiding when it came to social etiquette a cues, her one weakness. Luckily by now Rookfire had begun to speak, and she could find reason to focus her attention on the newest medic apprentice. Unsettling gaze settled upon the flower and its seed, a mild memory of a time Mossfreckle might have given her one. The flower looked weak, fragile, as if it could break at the touch of a paw with such delicately ruffled large petals of blood-red colour and abyss black centre where the stalks rose up. Though only the seeds were used, knowing it came from the flower, gathering the whole plant was more beneficial indeed. Easier to carry, and a build-in storage,,, Though her head tipped, intrigued by the notion of drying the plants. She blinked, slowly, uttering her silent question.
“How.. do you dry?”

Given in instances of shock or pain… It must be the seed Mossfreckle had given her that time, then. A state of shock, it was difficult to imagine; even how administering and taking a poppy seed must feel. It had been moons and Sleepysunrise had been in too much of a lost daze to be able to focus on its effects; one seed was to be given to apprentices and small warriors, where two were given to the average sized feline – could a particularly large feline get three poppy seeds? Ah, some form of an answer came. One or two seeds dulled the pain, whereas two or three seeds (she supposed adapted by size and weight of the cat) offered more pain relief and could put the patient to sleep. That was… Interesting. She pondered, what happened if you gave too many poppy seeds? Kits and nursing queens nothing more than a single seed, she noted the information in her mind (as was Nightshiver; while Elmshadow had told her never to give a kitting queen anything other than the plant she had now grown increasingly familiar with, she was curious to hear that a nursing queen could still have a single poppy seed).

She went over the words several times after she noted that some kits had already posed the questions on her mind. Curiously, though avoiding others’ gaze, she finally settled blue eyes on the kitten at her side, still occupying a corner of her mind. She paused, considering her words before speaking.
“You are… Miss Grandmama’s.”
She finally uttered, voice a quiet tone much like she had grown accustomed to over the moons; a mindless blabber leaving her mew she felt, after speaking. This was much like a meeting, only less… More interactive. Therefore she ought not speak, but a small part beneath the enforcer’s mask seemed curious about the act the kitten had taken in joining her.
