Shadeclaw is kicked away, and he skids to the side of the clearing. He doesn't hit anything, and he still has his senses about him, but his muscles ache from the kick. It's been too long since he had a proper battle, and Firepaw is a strong and fast apprentice. After a dozen or so moons, she'll be even better than him. How wonderful.

He quickly scrabbles on all fours again, in preparation for Firepaw to jump at him instead of him on her.

Firepaw doesn't move much at all, only shuffling her paws. Her ears and tail droop, almost seeming as if she were shrinking in on herself. She didn't mean to kick that hard. She really didn't! But that's what Shadeclaw had told her to do, right?

"A-are you okay?" She murmurs, voice quivering slightly. All of a sudden she doesn't want to continue this any longer. But... There was still so much she had to learn! She couldn't just stop now!

This makes Shadeclaw pause. He was fine. It was just training. Their claws were both in, and it wasn't like Firepaw had kicked him onto a boulder. This much was nothing, in fact, Shadeclaw felt the reaction from the average apprentice would be joy that they got it right, not fear. Was he overthinking things? Was this nothing to worry about, or should he ask her about it later?

"I'm fine." Shadeclaw meows impassively, putting the issue aside for now. "You should attack me now."

Firepaw let her tail hang naturally at Shadeclaw's reassurance, though her ears stayed pinned to the side of her head.

"Oh- okay..." She took a step forward, pausing and then leapt at the tom, noticeably less quicker than before. This time, instead of swiping a paw at him, Firepaw decides to use a similar tactic Shadeclaw had used. She attempts to grab and pin him down, her ear twitching with uncertainty.

Should she do this? It wouldn't hurt Shadeclaw, would it? Of course not, he's a warrior. And she is only a weak kit.
... Surely it won't be much of a problem, right?

Shadeclaw easily wriggles out of her attempt, twisting his body to stop Firepaw from pinning him down and getting access to his vulnerable throat and underbelly. Firepaw's attack is slower than before, and she didn't put as much power into her attack as she did in her kick in throwing him off. Since speed is Firepaw's biggest advantage in battle, this really affects her combatively. He can tell.

"Get rid of the hesitation," He meows, eyes glowing. "Stronger. Imagine you want to tear me to pieces."

His tone sounds cruel, but on his part, he's trying to give genuine advice, with only the best intentions.

Firepaw froze.

"Imagine you want to tear me to pieces."

Despite it only being said as a metaphorical meaning, Firepaw couldn't help but feel... Wrong. She couldn't be like Firemoth, she couldn't!
...
But if Shadeclaw were Leafclaw...

What would she do?

Without an answer, Firepaw instantly sprung at her mentor, teeth going for his throat even before she attempted to pin him down.

Shadeclaw was in the middle of pondering about his apprentice. About why she was so hesitant in her attacks as she was, and why she didn't seem comfortable. He didn't think his advice would help much, and he certainly doesn't expect Firepaw to immediately change attitudes and jump at him with the intent to maim or kill.

Shadeclaw feels danger near his body, and subconsciously dodges. Firepaw's teeth barely skims past his throat; a second or so late, and he could have been sent to the medicine cat den while bleeding to death. Shadeclaw goes on a defensive stance, but Firepaw is fast, and she quickly pins him down. It's a strong pin, but he recognizes it's not very skilled. It's wild and emotional.

Good thing he's stronger and bigger. Shadeclaw twists and attempts to throw Firepaw off. Then he kicks her off his body into the clearing. He might have used more strength than he should have, he was too startled.

It was like he flipped a switch, Shadeclaw thinks, panting to catch his breath. "Firepaw?"

Firepaw cannot stop. It was like she completely trusted her own mind, that Shadeclaw was indeed Leafclaw.
They looked so similar, how could she stop?

She lets out a startled yelp as she is kicked across the clearing, but she's quickly back on her paws, trembling and panting. She looks to Shadeclaw.

She had done something she wasn't supposed to, hadn't she?

Firepaw stayed in place, staring at Shadeclaw with her partial vision. She quickly opens her mouth to speak. She wants to say something. Anything! Apologise, to ask if he was okay, just anything. But as quickly as she'd opened them, they shut. Nothing comes out. She'd made a mistake. She was in no place to talk.

She cowers, as if Shadeclaw were actually Leafclaw himself.

Shadeclaw isn't a very social cat. He's bad at recognizing other cat's emotions, and even worse at dealing with them. Should he start the conversation with a compliment? He should start it with a compliment.

"Good pin, but..." he hesitates, then meows gruffly, "Too emotional." Oops, was that the right direction to take his words in? What about um...

"Are you okay?" Shadeclaw asks Firepaw. It honestly exhausts him more to talk, than to do the actual battle. He is constantly on eggshells, worrying about accidentally saying something wrong or making a mistake.

Oh. There was such thing as "too emotional"...? Why hadn't she known? Of course she wouldn't have known. Firepaw hung her head, shifting her weight from paw to paw. This wasn't good. The first lesson she's ever had with her new mentor and she'd already messed up! She could tell Shadeclaw wasn't mad, he did not sound mad... He was only telling her what was wrong and what was right. That's what mentors do. They help their apprentice get to better heights. That's what mentors are for.

A mere stepping stone.

Right?

Firepaw snaps her head back up when Shadeclaw begins to speak again.

"M-me?" She blurts. OF COURSE IT'S YOU, YA FLUFFBRAIN! She sputters. "I mean- uh- yeah! I'm- I'm fine. A-are you? I'm sorry, I- I didn't really mean to-"

She just wanted this combat lesson to be done and over with. Any longer and she might collapse.
