Newtbelly watched as the apprentice slunk round the trees - he hid it decently, but he was proud. "Perfect," he smiled. "How about we test it on some prey?" Stealth was often a hard one to practice, but tracking prey should help. Newtbelly scented the air, hoping to get a wiff of something - what was that? Rat? "There's a rat somewhere round here," he crouched, searching for a scent trail of some kind. "Do you smell that?" Newtbelly was an okay hunter - decent, but nothing special. Maybe Silentpaw would be able to pick up the trail?

Hunting? Oh, of course. Silentpaw could do some hunting, of course. He would call himself a decent hunter. He hadn't missed a single piece of prey. Well, he'd only caught one mouse, but that was still something.

He perked up as a strange yet familiar scent reached his nose. He stilled, attempting to locate where the scent was coming from. Seems like Newtbelly had noticed it as well. Silentpaw couldn't help but feel pride in scenting it before Newtbelly had. He nodded, barely even comprehending what the warrior had asked fully, before dropping into a crouch and trailing through the forest floor.

And... Aha. There it was.

He had located the scent trail this rat had left, and he wasted no second in following it. He began to slow as the scent became stronger, and ultimately stopped in his tracks. He was getting the track of hunting, and sneaking and all that. He eyed the small furry creature through dark blue eyes, lowering his body so his belly was almost touching the ground. Not bothering to wait for Newtbelly's command, Silentpaw was quick to begin stalking it, however stopped a distance away.

He paused, not moving for a long time. He watched the rat through narrowed eyes, claws unsheathing. He steadied his forepaws, putting more weight onto his hind legs.

Then, as soon as the rat began moving, he leapt at it, grasping it in unsheathed claws. He leaned down to bite down at its neck, killing it instantly. He held the limp prey in his jaws, and trotted over to where his mentor was.

Almost instantly, Silentpaw was in a hunter's crouch. For now, Newtbelly would wait here - he didn't want to scare the prey off. The apprentices movements were calculated, well thought out. Then, his leap - perfect again. Far better than Newtbelly's would have been at such an age. It seemed Silentpaw had a natural prowess for hunting. The prey was brought over swiftly - "Nice job, certainly better than I could've done." he purred a little, proud of the kid.
What now? More hunting could be good for stealth training, but he didn't want the training to get too same-ey. Maybe an introduction to battle? The day was still young, after all. "Right, we've got plenty of time today, if you'd be up for more training?" he looked to Silentpaw. "The Grotto's far more open, if you'd like to start on some battle basics?"

Silentpaw quickly buried the rat he had caught in the ground, turning to Newtbelly. He fought to keep himself from smiling. It felt good, is he was being honest, to know that his mentor was proud. Perhaps now, he could finally make his mother proud.
And battle training was exactly what she'd want him to do.

The tortoiseshell tabby tom gave a quick, breif nod, scanning his surroundings to make sure he'd remember where he had buried the prey.

He led the two of them into the green clearing - a strangely picturesque place for battle training. Now, where to start? With Tickpaw, he'd asked him what he'd do, but that certainly wouldn't work here. Maybe they should just start out with basic moves.

"Let's start out with some basic moves before we get into it," he blinked. Silentpaw already knew how to sneak - and he was good at it - Newtbelly would love to teach him how to apply that to battle, but he had to remind himself - one thing at a time. "The front paw strike, and front paw blow."
"With the front paw blow, you keep your claws sheathed." He demonstrated, wacking his paw downwards, "and bring it down on your opponent's head." He'd never been partial to the attack - what was the point in fighting without claws? Nevertheless, it was one of the fundamentals, so he'd teach it anyway. "Is it useless? Possibly. But it's good to learn. 'Spose it's good for friendly spars, or if you're fighting a cat far weaker than yourself?"
Then for the better of the two, "The front paw strike - or forepaw slash," he demonstrated, slashing at the air with his paw. "Claws out, you slice downward with your paw. You aim this at the face or body of your opponent." He then demonstrated the two again, highlighting the differences. "So the blow's aimed at the head - claws sheathed - whilst the strike's aimed at the face or body, claws unsheathed. You wanna give them a try?"

Finally, some battle training. He was quite looking forward to it. He stood a small distance away from Newtbelly, watching his demonstrations. The front paw blow. What was the point of it? Possibly to knock someone to the ground. He supposed it did not really serve a lot of purpose in real battles. Now, the strike, he was interested. He flexed his own claws as his mentor demonstrated.

He nodded once, and not wanting to hit his own mentor, he decided to just attack the air, like what Newtbelly had done. He swung his paw downwards, attempting to mimic his mentor, claws sheathed. He did it once more with the other paw in an attempt to grow more used to the move.
He then unsheathed his needle-like claws, flexing them for a moment before slashing at the air. It felt nice. The last time he'd used his claws on someone was when he was only a kit, and that had been an accident. It felt great to know his claws would finally be of purpose.

Silentpaw's commitment to the movements was impressive, practising them multiple times with no flaws. "Good," though his praise often came with few words, it was clear from the tom's tone that he was impressed. He'd hoped he could teach Silentpaw how to spar with another apprentice. Maybe he could do a session with him and Stempaw later on, once the latter was ready. So now what? He could teach some more moves, but that would all be useless without putting them into practice. Well, he might as well act as a sort of fake sparring partner, it seemed the right option.

"Okay, I'm gonna come towards you, and I want you to try out one of those moves on me - just keep your claws sheathed for both. For safety's sake." Newtbelly had often found himself not caring too much for safety in spars, but he could imagine Mossfreckle would give him a piece of his mind if he wandered in all 'heyy uhh so i told my apprentice to scratch me, not you have to fix it..' Don't worry about whacking me, I can take it." he added, a small laugh escaping his lips, before he began to move. He didn't come fast, of course - no need to run at the 'paw in his first battle session - but he slunk over, agile and quick as he moved. Though it'd let up a little once he was up and moving, his shoulder seared a little as he stepped, making his usual slink not quite as effective. Not that it mattered all that much. he had no intention to anticipate and dodge Silentpaw's hit, well, if it came extraordinarily slow, he'd dodge - but for now, it was about teaching the move in its most basic form.

Okay. So far, so good. Silentpaw slowly nodded, preparing for something he had never once done in his life. He wasn't too sure how this would go.

He hesitated for a brief moment before springing to action, immediately attempting a strike at his chest, claws sheathed.

As he came forward, Silentpaw struck him in the chest - there was a small second of hesitation, as to be expected, but no long pause, no shaky paws, and he didn’t miss. All good signs. Once hit, Newtbelly leapt to the left, and sat down. “Nice one, you’re doing well.” For a moment, he paused, considering the best course of action. Since they were just getting started he figured it’d be best to focus in those two moves, and not get too into anything. “Those attacks work well against any cat, but you’ll have to use them differently. For instance, sparring with a ShadowClan cat is very different to a battle against WindClan.” Admittedly, Newtbelly had never found himself on the battlefield - excluding the other day’s fox. Most of his knowledge came from what he’d been told, or guesses made during gatherings. “Many ShadowClan cats are sneaky and light on their paws, but some are bulky. Think Dawnstar. Though I’m sure Dawnstar has her tactics down, other big cats might not.” He considered his own mentor - Owlthroat, facing defeat to Hawkbite. Certainly not out of disrespect, but it was.. Something to think about, he supposed, feeling bad for even the possibility of thinking of him in that way. “You get these kind of cats across most clans. Once they’ve caught you, you’re in trouble. But as long as you can avoid their claws, you’re safe. So, you’ve gotta strike from a distance, ideally.” That was right - Owlthroat was able to destroy that fox in a manner Newtbelly could only dream of. The younger cat found himself trying to weaken the animal, only able to make small dents, once his distraction gave Owlthroat the opportunity to pounce, it stood no chance.

“In that case, stealth helps immensely too. Creep, and then strike them. Get away quick. When it comes to fighting faster cats?? His only comparison was the fox, which… Had him pinned. He figured that was more similar to fighting a ShadowClan cat, though. “It can be hard, especially if they’re stealthy. Luckily, WindClan’s normally lacking in that area. Plus, most ShadowClan cats aren’t solely fast or solely strong. So if you time things right, you can strike a skinny WindClanner to the ground. Stealth of course helps again. If you can catch them before they catch you, it’s good news.” Bulk, vs speed… There had to be more to it than that. ThunderClan were often well balanced, but stealth worked well against them. RiverClan? Very similar to Wind. The next best thing for the ‘paw would probably be a spar, but sparring Silentpaw himself seemed unfair, even if he held back. “A lot of information for one session, I know,”he stretched out his back, preparing to walk again. “How about we head back for today. I’ll see if I can find another apprentice for you to spar with?” He tilted his head, checking the idea didn’t sound dreadful to Silentpaw.

To Silentpaw, it was quite underwhelming, but he could care less about that. It was only the beginning, was it not? He took note of everything Newtbelly said, even noting his slight hesitation between his sentences. Though Newtbelly looked like he would know quite a bit about battle, he did not sound much like it, given the way he said certain things. Silentpaw wouldn't doubt his mentor, though. He trusted Newtbelly.

Would you trust him if all he told was lies?

Silentpaw gave his normal nod at Newtbelly at his last few words. Training with another apprentice, sure. He did not really enjoy it, but it was something.
