Burnedpaw nodded, standing for a moment to memorize how this felt. He carefully stalked forward into the forest, opening his mouth to taste the scents around him.
-rolled 16-
Burnedpaw caught the scent of something scuttling about in the undergrowth, and turned his attention to the scent. He crept forward to see a mouse. Burnedpaw tried to remember some of the basics of hunting he'd heard others discuss, checking the wind and making sure your target can't hear you or catch your scent. Check the tail too. He glanced back to ensure his tail wasn't going to brush against anything.
Satisfied, Burnedpaw continued to maneuver carefully towards his target.
-rolled 8-
The mouse picked its head before rushing back into the undergrowth. Burnedpaw spat in frustration, but opted not to chase it, figuring it would just make more noise and alert other prey around. He lifted his tail, checking the wind to see that the direction had changed. My scent was blown right to it. Damn. He looked back at his mentor briefly before crouching down again, checking his paws before opening his mouth to try again.
Hawkthorn had no emotion etched on his face that showed if he was mad at his apprentice for not catching the mouse. Instead, he nodded encouragingly and checked the wind. The prey scent should blow to me if Burnedpaw were to catch it. Hawkthorn thought to himself and watched him try again.

Burnedpaw appreciated his mentor's encouraging nod, though his expression also remained clear. Only the slightest twitch in his tail showing acknowledgment. He lifted his muzzle, using his whiskers to detect the direction of the wind and adjusting his position. Once satisfied, he tried again, tasting the air to locate another prey scent.
-rolled 18-
It didn't take long for him to detect another mouse. Burnedpaw stalked forward carefully, mindful of his paws and the breeze. His target was soon in sight, he just had to be careful until he was close enough...
-rolled 16-
With a well aimed pounce, Burnedpaw landed on his target and swiftly broke it's neck by clamping down on it's neck. As he felt the mouse's warm blood fill his mouth, he felt a sense of pride. My first kill! Burnedpaw lifted his head, padding back over to his mentor wordlessly. The thrill and pride of his accomplishment not hidden from his eyes this time.

Hawkthorn grinned and nodded at his apprentice. "Great! We'll practice catching more and bring it to the elders and queens back at camp. Go ahead and catch more." Hawkthorn meowed then stopped himself. "Oh, put that prey under a pile of leaves, will ya? Don't want an owl or fox snatching it." He added quickly and began to scent the air.

Burnedpaw nodded, honestly excited to get to practice this again. He found some undergrowth and dried leaves and covered his catch as instructed, then set back to searching for scents.
-rolled 3-
No luck, but he wasn’t going to give up. Burnedpaw padded a little more into the forest, keeping his mouth open in search of prey scents.
-rolled 19-
Burnedpaw stiffened, and immediately sank into a hunter’s crouch. He crept forward a little more until he spotted a squirrel digging at the roots of a tree, searching for food of its own. It was almost poetic, the squirrel searching for food was in the sights of a predator searching for food.
-rolled 19-
The squirrel seemed totally unaware of the danger as Burnedpaw approached. He kept extra attention on the direction of the breeze and his tail, making sure nothing gave away his position. Once he felt he was ready, he gathered his weight into his haunches and then pounced onto the squirrel. The apprentice quickly cut its life short with a bite to the neck, and then buried his catch. Once more reflecting upon the poeticness of the situation, but only briefly. He quickly turned his attention to look for more prey. Just one more, then I’ll check in with Hawkthorn. He promptly buried his squirrel before continuing on.
-rolled 12-
He caught the scent of a bird, but it seemed to spot him first and immediately took off. Thankfully, the bird didn’t make a lot of racket so he figured he should be able to still find prey in the area who didn’t take off.
-rolled 19-
He was right. Almost right away he caught another scent, something similar to a mouse but…kinda different. Burnedpaw crouched down and crept slowly forward until his eyes zeroed in on a creature that looked like a mouse with a distorted nose. He didn’t have a name for the creature, but he knew it was food. It seemed plump, like it was eating as much food as possible before burrowing down for the whole leaf-bare. Burnedpaw felt he got lucky with this one.
-rolled 16-
He crept up on the creature until he felt he was at a good angle and distance, leaping for the vole. He landed a little clumsily, paws skidding on the fallen leaves that were molded underneath. But thank the Stars, the creature was already in his jaws. He bit down on the neck of the creature, closing his eyes as he thanked StarClan. Burnedpaw doubled back for his squirrel, and then tracked his scent back to where he buried his mouse. He set his catches down, looking up to see if Hawkthorn was still there.

Hawkthorn looked down at Burnedpaw from the tree he had silently climbed onto. "Nice one." He meowed quietly, but not so quiet that Burnedpaw couldn't hear him. Hawkthorn jumped down, sticking his tail straight in the air so his body would adjust and make him land on his paws. Once he had landed next to Burnedpaw, Hawkthorn meowed, "Want to try climbing? It's pretty easy once you get the hang of it." Hawkthorn glanced up the tree that he had just jumped from and frowned. "Perhaps we should try it on a smaller tree. This is a bit big for a beginner." He commented and put a couple more leaves in the pile
Hawkthorn walked forward, making an indent in the tree he had jumped from to remember where the prey was. He kept walking until he spotted a tree that was a tad smaller than the one from before. "This is a good one!" He meowed and checked that Burnedpaw had followed.

Burnedpaw blinked up towards his mentor, waving his tail in appreciation. He his catches down and buried them as Hawkthorn jumped down, observing how he stuck his tail out for the landing.
He nodded at his mentor, eager to give it a try. He followed Hawkthorn to the smaller tree, blinking up towards where the lower branch was. He padded up to the tree, setting his forepaws on the trunk and looking at Hawkthorn, an eager gleam in his eyes.

Hawkthorn patted the tree. "nice and sturdy." He murmured and looked at Burnedpaw. "Okay, so how I do it is get into, like, a stance like you're about to pounce." He explained and lowered himself to the ground, tail lashing and eyes fixed on the tree's branch. "then. I pounce and wrap my paw around the branch with my foreleg.." Hawkthorn whispered, so soft that Burnedpaw could barely hear him. He pounced suddenly and did what he had just explained, wrapping his right foreleg around the lowest branch and pushing himself up it with his hind legs.
Hawkthorn glanced up at the next branch and jumped again, doing the same steps as before. He looked down at Burnedpaw and meowed, "You try!"

Burnedpaw nodded at Hawkthorn, looking back to the tree. He unsheathed his claws and dug them into the bark, wanting to get a feel for how much pressure was required to dig them in. He nodded to himself, letting his paws touch the ground again. He shifted his weight, gathering his strength into his legs with his eyes focused on the lowest branch. He didn't expect to quite reach it like Hawkthorn, he wasn't as long as his mentor just yet despite being taller for his age. When he was ready, Burnedpaw shot himself up the tree as high as he could, surprised at how close he actually made it to the branch.
Quickly, before he lost the momentum, he dug his claws into the tree, propelling himself up the final tail-length. Claws outstretched, Burnedpaw latched onto the branch and hauled himself up. He huffed as he stood on the branch, it took more effort than he estimated to pull him up that final bit, but he made it! His eyes sparkled as he looked down. This is...pretty cool. He looked over at Hawkthorn eagerly, wondering what was next.

Hawkthorn was staring up at a branch where there was a fat squirrel. He looked down and whispered, "Want to try to catch it?"

Aw hell yeah. Burnedpaw's eyes narrowed with focus and he nodded slightly, trying to be careful not to disturb the tree leaves with any sudden movements.
