Pondpaw lifted her head when her friend - Birdpaw - made her way into the den with empty amber eyes. River-blue hues lit up with worry as the other apprentice sank into her nest.

Lostspark.

The Enforcer - who had been Birdpaw’s mother - had been killed at Darkwater Mire. Without hesitation, the blue-gray mackerel tabby got to her paws and picked her way over to Birdpaw, settling down beside the other apprentice with her pelt pressed against hers.

“Oh, Birdpaw,” Pondpaw whispered, pressing her maw to the other she-cat’s neck. “I’m so sorry..”

It must be hard for Birdpaw. Rainpaw had died, and now Lostspark. Poor Birdpaw didn’t deserve this.

A presence settled against her side, but The Vessel didn't react. A muzzle was pressed into her neck, but even then, she didn't react. It was only once words washed over her did she even shift, though it was only a flick of her ear. Sorry... yes, everyone was sorry, weren't they. Sorry that her mother had died, sorry that her father was absent, sorry that her oldest brother was eaten, sorry that her older sisters abandoned her, sorry that her younger siblings had died or gone missing one after another. Sorry.

Birdpaw was sorry. Sorry that she wasn't smart enough, wasn't strong enough, wasn't good enough to be worthy of sticking around for. Heronpaw had promised her she wouldn't leave, and then did. Mama had promised she wouldn't leave, then did. Mossfreckle was too busy with his new boyfriend to bother with her, and even her mentor had disappeared. It was almost funny, if it didn't make Birdpaw want to drown herself in the very waters that took her mother.

But the warmth against her pelt and the scent wreathing her... Birdpaw had always thrived on attention, thrived on just being around other cats. She emulated and matched energies. She supposed that was what made her a Vessel, rather than her own cat. That's right... Birdpaw didn't exist. She was just whatever cat she could copy. But right now, she was too tired. Too empty. Birdpaw moved her head a whisker's-width towards Pondpaw. The company was welcome, truly.

As Birdpaw's head shifted closer to Pondpaw, the former RiverClanner gently wrapped her tail around her denmate's shoulders, giving a soothing purr and Birdpaw's ears comforting licks.

There wasn't anything else that Pondpaw could say, so she just kept whispering, ''I'm so sorry,'' to the other apprentice in hopes that the she-cat would actually believe it.

It was their first time entering the Apprentice den and they were a bit nervous. Midnightpaw padded inside and looked around, noticing the other apprentice. They quickly padded over to a new nest, made for them and quickly sat in it. This den was different from the nursery.

Who knew a single, meaningless death could cause so much conflict in her world. But that death wasn't meaningless...in fact it was the exact opposite. A life gone...her mother's life gone...gone from hers. No, Lostspark didn't deserve the title of mother anymore. In fact she never did. Mothers were supposed to care for their children and be there for them...most importantly they needed to be truthful. Lostspark had never met those requirements. Never shown an ounce of care for existence. And yet she foolishly kept faith that she would fulfil the promise she had made so many moons ago...'be a better mother, she said...yeah right.'

Tear stained face buried in her paws, Quietpaw layed curled in her shredded nest. She couldn't bring herself to maintain it's condition on a daily basis as she so commonly did. Shaking inhales were the only sound emitted from her withdrawn form, drowining in the darkness and bathing in melancholy. Sad? No...that wasn't the word for her current feelings...enraged? Yes. Hatred? Yes. Upset...yes... and oh how she despised it. How she despises how much pain and anger Lostspark had forsaken her with her sudden death. Quietpaw felt cheated. Cheated out of the love she'd been promised. A fake, empty promise only made to cover up a a fox heart of a cat.
